Hey this should be a poll.
-Montana
-Brady
-The Trout in Dan Marino's rectum.

Vince 01-24-2005 01:18 AM

Gah. Horrible. But I guess I'm going to have to live with it. I want them to lose just so Brady is never compared to Montana again.

Did I just hear someone call Brian Dawkins? :D

Even if Brady wins this Superbowl, I can't see a comparison to Montana. He just hasn't been there long enough. Montana was a great QB for a decade, at least. Brady still needs some more great seasons. They don't all have to be Super Bowl seasons, but he's only started for 4, and in none of those years did he throw for 30+ TDs (granted, Montana only had one), but Brady has also thrown at least 12 INTs each year, while Montana had several season throwing fewer than 12 INTs. Brady's career YPA is 6.90, Montana's is 7.52. Brady's career Cmp% is 61.6%, Montana 63.2%.

The point is, Brady needs to keep this up for a good 5 more season before I think anyone can seriously give an argument that Brady is on the same level as Montana. (And let's face it, Brady isn't exactly going against teams in the playoffs that are really comparable to the Bears, Giants and the Redskins of the 80's.)

Darkiller 01-24-2005 03:23 AM

The thing about Brady is that he's only been in the league for 5 years, a starter for 4 years ...and this is his 3rd time leading his team to the SuperBowl !
Imagine he wins another with a 3rd SuperBowl MVP title...

amazing. It clearly defies NFL history...and what we are supposed to witness.

BigDawg 01-24-2005 05:45 AM

Hell I find it hard to put Brady in my top 10 with the likes of Super Joe, Marino, Elway, Foutes, Moon, Stabler, Farve, Young, Unitas.

Ask me again in 2-3 years

Darkiller 01-24-2005 05:48 AM

Stabler in your top 10 ?

If New England wins, he'll be in the top 3 clutch QB's of all time.

Frankly, the Montana comparison isn't absurd.

rkmsuf 01-24-2005 02:06 PM

Right now Brady is way better.

maximus 01-24-2005 02:10 PM

Montana.....hands up.

Cap Ologist 01-24-2005 02:18 PM

Until Tom Brady says "Hey look, there's John Candy. Let's drive 92 yards in 3:20 and win this thing", Joe Montana is better!

I think he said "Hey, look over there. It's Kurt Warner's brother. Oh, I mean wife." and then drove to the winning field goal with a minute left.

DanGarion 01-24-2005 02:21 PM

For what it's worth.

Montana!

Hands Down.

Bar None!...

insert other cliche saying here.

Joe 01-24-2005 02:29 PM

Michael Vick. He's hall of fame material, ya know.

SunDancer 01-24-2005 02:32 PM

I say Brady. Montana has a much better roster around him, filled with Pro Bowlers, ect. in the then-free spending days. Brady has good players, but not even close to what Montana had.

SirFozzie 01-24-2005 02:35 PM

Montana is great.

Brady is very good.

How does Brady get great?

By continuing what he's doing (not the pace, if he continued to win Super Bowls at a 2 out of 3, or 3 out of 4 rate the rest of his career, they wouldn't compare him to Montana, they'd compare him to the Pope.... more like remain a good QB, win some clutch games, etcetera) for another 5-10 years.

maximus 01-24-2005 02:41 PM

Joe Brady is #1.

I can't believe it hasn't been said yet, but neither of them could hold Dean Houston's jock. And both have tried.

Coffee Warlord 01-24-2005 02:54 PM

What about Marsha Brady?

digamma 01-24-2005 03:41 PM

If you preface it with, "at this point in his career," isn't it clearly Brady?

It took Montana 8 seasons to get to his 3rd Super Bowl. Brady's completion percentage is comparable to Montana's and he's thrown for more touchdowns and yards at this point in his career. Obviously, that comparison isn't perfect because of the greater importance of the short passing game today and the fact that this year is the first year the Pats have had a real stud at RB, but still the numbers are as good or better than Montana's at this point and he's ahead of where Montana was in championship terms.

Everyone knows Rick Mirer was the best quarterback to ever come out of Notre Dame. Therefore, it must be Brady.

...or Otto Graham. :)

JonInMiddleGA 01-24-2005 05:41 PM

1) Montana, without hesitation nor doubt.

2) Mad props to TLK & Ragone for working in their earlier reference.

Yeah, all that talent queezed into 8 teams while the NFL has it spread out over 32. Much harder for Otto. :D
