The So-Called "Experts"

I love these guys.

Two weeks ago, they're all saying the Colts will destroy the Pats. Wrong.

Yesterday, virtually everyone predicted the Steelers over the Pats, including three of the four pre-game announcers. Wrong.

Now, it seems everyone is picking the Eagles over the Pats, especially with "TO" coming back. Rod Woodson said the reason PHI will win is because "the Eagles are more hungry" to win championship than the Pats. Is he f'ing serious?

Maybe in two weeks Belichick will say something like this at the post-game press conference: "Well, I'm glad that we finally earned your respect. And all we had to do was win three Super Bowls in four years." ;)

All this lack of respect for NE sure makes it easy for me to root for them.

Joe 01-24-2005 09:21 AM

experts are dumm

rkmsuf 01-24-2005 09:21 AM

I doubt everyone is picking the Eagles.

Bee 01-24-2005 09:22 AM

The Pats were favorites against the Steelers and are already 6 1/2 point favorites against the Eagles. Not really sure that can be considered a lack of respect...

cthomer5000 01-24-2005 09:26 AM

you're full of shit.

ISiddiqui 01-24-2005 09:34 AM

Wait... who was picking the Steelers over the Pats? A few morons on CBS?! Everyone else was saying the Pats were going to win... big time!

I know I am, but not for long..... ;)

Anyways I have heard plenty of people pick both team in every game so far this postseason. Between NFL Radio, ESPN, Sports Byline, FOX Sports, Sportingnews Radio, the TV guys, I believe the Pats are getting plenty of respect.

When I hear comments like the ones from Shannon Sharpe about renaming the Lombardi Trophy after Bellichick, and he is nothing but serious, then I have a hard time thinking the Pats are not respected....

Whether a team is a favorite for betting purposes is very different than what the experts say. The line is a reflection of how fans are betting, not the "experts."

Samdari 01-24-2005 09:58 AM

Everyone I heard in the national media picked the Pats. Don't know where you got everyone picking the Steelers.

So your experts are limited to a couple guys on CBS? Sorry dude, but you need a little more backup to make this bird fly...

scooper 01-24-2005 10:29 AM

Yeah, I heard many experts pick on both sides. Probably more picked the Pats. The "us against the world" mentality hardly applies when a team has won 2/3 superbowls and is on the verge of another one.

Huckleberry 01-24-2005 10:30 AM

Huh?

Almost everyone picked the Pats.

cuervo72 01-24-2005 10:31 AM

Well, Berman and Jackson were calling the Pats an unbelieveable team and a dynasty, and that Brady could possibly be the best ever.

Doesn't sound like they are favoring the Eagles there...

Darkiller 01-24-2005 10:34 AM

Although the Pats are the favorites (how couldn't they be), I think the Eagles have a strong chance to beat them for a number or reasons :

- an experienced/matured team finally in the Superbowl after 4 straight NFC Championships.
- They are clearly hungry to win it all
- a QB who will do anything to win this thing.

I see the Pats winning the Superbowl ultimately but "experts" shouldn't talk like if they have already won this game...it could actually be much closer than what they think.

Joe 01-24-2005 10:38 AM

well, Michael Irvin was the only "expert" on ESPN countdown to pick the Eagles to beat the Falcons... so what do they know.

Cringer 01-24-2005 10:49 AM

By the way, do these guys even call themselves experts? I doubt it, and most of these guys would probably tell you that. I think we are the ones who always label them as experts, just because they are on TV or radio....

Grid Iron 01-24-2005 11:00 AM

Yikes! I guess my perception was different from reality.

After looking into it a little more, it seems like the Pats were favored.

Oh well, I'm big enough to admit I was wrong.

I think those three losers on CBS just pissed me off. Last time I consider them a reflection of how all Americans feel. ;)

Maybe I'll have to root for the Eagles now. . .

EagleFan 01-24-2005 11:39 AM

If you want to gripe about these experts, try listening to them as an Eagles fan. First the Vikings were going to beat them, then they had no chance against Atlanta's running game. Not much respect for the team with the best record in the conference, a team that destroyed the other teams in the confernce in games that mattered.

Oh well, that's in the past and I'm still smiling. ;)

Leonidas 01-24-2005 12:36 PM

I don't recall that many folks picking the Colts to win and don't recall anyone picking Pittsburgh yesterday. Not sure what "experts" you're listening to. Is that chip on your Patriot clad shoulder getting kind of heavy lately? Not sure New England really needs to, or really can play the disrespected card.

OK, dude, no fair calling me out after I already admitted I was wrong. That's just rubbing it in. ;)

Actually, everything I heard had the Eagles winning both games. From everything I've heard, most people agree that the two best teams are in the SuperBowl.

sabotai 01-24-2005 05:21 PM

What Bee said. There were some people saying the Vikings because of the assumed rust effect (they forgot that the Viking's defense suck donkey balls), but I'd say it was a good 4 out of 5 going for the Eagles against Atlanta.

It kind of makes me laugh, and gets annoying quick, when people seem to try to be the underdog "we get no respect" side. Give me a break. There were people picking the Eagles to go to the Super Bowl from the beginning of the season. They get no respect? Suuuuuuure.

Almost everyone picked the Colts to win. 7 out 8 on ESPN.com. The lone exception being Bill Simmons. From what I can remember: everyone on the ESPN pre-grame shows, everyone on NFL on HBO, seemingly 3 out 4 on every network pre-grame. The Prime Minister of Canada. Even the line moved to show that Colts were getting heavy money from the betting public. I think this is the last year that will happen though.

I actually prefer it when the Patriots get tabbed as the probable loser like that though since it obviously motivates them and makes me less nervous.

ISiddiqui 01-24-2005 11:44 PM

Can I write a post about the Falcons getting no respect in the game against the Rams? Everyone else is doing it ;).

Only one of the announcers on the ESPN picked the Eagles over the Falcons. They all predicted that the Falcons' Hall of Famers Vick and Dunn would be too much for the Eagles to handle.

ISiddiqui 01-25-2005 12:46 PM

LOL! And a panel which include Michael Irvin and Steve Young is akin all football 'experts'... heheh

I looked at the prediction sheet on ESPN - 5-2, Eagles over Falcons. 5-3 Patriots over Steelers.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/playof...ory?id=1970658

NFL-HBO 3/4 had the Iggles, 2/4 Pats.

ISiddiqui 01-25-2005 08:29 PM

Damn... that's good work, Des :D. Though I still think that calling the ESPN (or HBO) crews experts is streaching things.

Though I think he's probably refering to the NFL Countdown guys: Berman, Young, Irvin, and Jackson. If not, then I got no clue what he's talking about.
