What isn't in my liquor cabinet? :)

Ksyrup 01-26-2005 07:06 AM

Nada. I had one bottle of Amaretto from a friend's wedding 3 years ago that we finally polished off during the holidays. One of these months I'll get around to replacing it.

Logan 01-26-2005 08:18 AM

If you wanna call the freezer in my apartment shared by four guys a liquor cabinet, we have:

Grey Goose
Jagermeister
Goldschlager
Smirnoff Citrus
Blackhaus
2 bottles of Absinth
Southern Comfort
Peach Schnapps

Scholes 01-26-2005 08:41 AM

Bailey's, Kahlua, Ketel One Vodka, Level Vodka, Jameson (All were xmas/birthday gifts).

EDIT: Whoa, what does it say about you when you receive 5 bottles of booze in a 3 day stretch? At least everything was different and there were no doubles.

The stuff that I purchased is Bombay Sapphire gin, Jack Daniels, E&J brandy and some Malibu.

Add that to the Newcastle/Murphy's Stout in the fridge and I'm ready for a blizzard of mammoth proportions.

Not many people I encounter enjoy this terrific single malt. We dont have choices here in the states for this, only the 15 year option. Have you had a chance to enjoy both? If so, are the differences subtle enough to weigh out?

JeeberD 01-26-2005 10:56 AM

Smirnoff Vodka
Kahlua
Baileys
Cuervo Gold

I'll upgrade on the vodka and tequila when I get a job that actually pays well...

I've tried the standard 10-yr old Laphroaig before and bought this 11-yr old as a special limited "edition" last year, both are very good but the limited edition is a tiny bit more mellower. Both should be more rugged than the 15-yr old, but I haven't tasted that one myself, only listened to opinions from others.

JonInMiddleGA 01-26-2005 11:26 AM

Not much, just the essentials.
Makers Mark for me.
Bloody Mary mix for my wife, with the vodka stored in the fridge.
There's an assortment of "guest beers" in the vegetable crisper too, with a few bottles of "unexpected guest" wine in the little rack atop the fridge.

Now THAT is a liqour cabinet. The rest of you so far just have some booze in your house.

As for me, I tend to go a little more for the HIghlands than the smoky Islays, but I did finish a bottle of Coal Ila a while back and really enjoyed it.

Chivas Regal 18 yo My favorite Blend
Aberlour 10 yo Great taste and only 10 years old. My staple, and a great "starter" scotch.
Macallan 12 yo Aged in Sherry Casks, the flavour really comes through.
Glengoyne 17 yo My favorite, well of those I can afford to buy
Glengoyne 21 yo A christmas Gift, and my new favorite treat.
Highland Park 12 yo My winter Scotch. Smoky.

Bombay gin (sometimes Saphire)
A cheap ass Brandy my wife bought seemingly a half gallon of...it is undrinkable and won't go away.
Kahlua
Bailey's
Meyer's Dark Rum
Arette Tequila
Grey Goose
Wine, wine and more wine. Mostly Reds, More Zinfandels than any other category.
Maker's Mark
Crown Royal
Oh and a bottle of Old Bushmills single malt for making Irish Coffee.

cartman 01-26-2005 12:06 PM

Here's what I've got in mine:

Kahlua
Godiva chocolate liqueur
Maker's Mark
Bacardi
Grand Marnier
Frangelico
DiSaronno Amaretto
Glenlivet 12yr scotch
Lagavulin 16yr scotch
Carolan's Irish Cream
Gallo Dry Vermouth
Gallo Sweet Vermouth
Beefeater Gin
Peach Schnapps
Hot Damn
Ouzo
Belvedere Vodka
Don Julio Tequila
1958 Krohn Colheita Port
Lots of wine (I'm in the process of building a wine cellar)

I certainly don't have the most refind palate, but the 10 year old with a tablespoon of water tastes exactly like the 15 year old to me.
(It feals good to display my ignorance in public like this.)
Any other suggestions for single malts that are similar to Laphroaig? Are the other Islay single malts similar?

Laphroaig is certainly one of the more unique whiskies, but Lagavulin comes close to that peaty flavor. Most Islay whiskies hint at various degrees of saltwater, seaweed and peat, but Talisker (of the western Highlands) also is somewhat similar.

Lagavulin(16) is the best generally available Islay malt IMO. Most all of them, however, have that smokey/salty taste. It is what Islay malts are known for, and they play it up. Lag will also run you a bit more than Laphroaig.

FWIW, the best bargain single malt that I have had is the Balveine 10 year old. It's pretty cheap b/c it is only 10 years old, but it is also pretty mild and smooth. Nothing like the complexity of an Islay malt, but not harsh either.

The best that I have ever had is the Johnnie Walker Blue Label. That was my present to myself when I got engaged. It's like drinking velvet. I don't see me getting another bottle until I have a kid or win the lottery.

Oh, and since we are swapping stories, I once tasted some Lagavulin that had been "double aged" in sherry casks. It was like normal Lagavulin, but with a heavy sherry taste underneath it all. Way too heavy and complex for normal consumption, IMO, but a very unique experience. (I don't think that it is available here. The guy who had it got it in Scotland).

albionmoonlight 01-26-2005 12:54 PM

Oh--and this thread has me itching for some single malts.

Any recommendations generally that people want to throw out would be appreciated. I'm always looking to expand my horizons.

VPI97 01-26-2005 01:44 PM

Nothing - I swore off liquor two and a half years ago. Haven't had a drop since.

poor bastard....*sends sympathy VPI's way*

I used to be a fall down drunk, if I had a single beer, I was gonna be at that bar all night long. never failed. I started to drink, I got drunk, I kept on drinking, I passed out.

A number of times I awoke hooked up to machinery at the local hospital.

Took two rounds of therapy to break the addiction/habit, though I still drank. Then my first marriage snapped and I spent 6 months, quite literally , drunk.

I haven't been truly inebriated since I think.....

I can drink all i want now, the urge to over-indulge is simply non-existant anymore.

I do love my scotch though, but I haven't got a collection like some of these. I am envious =)

Ren

MacroGuru 01-26-2005 02:12 PM

Amaretto
Jack
Belvedere
Butterscotch Schnapps
Sour Apple Schnapps

Then I have a nice 30 bottle collection in my wine rack.

Mainly Shiraz, Pinot Noirs, but I also have about 5 or 6 bottles of white as well.

I still drink...Guinness, Newcastle, Harp, Bass, Yuengling...but just not liquor. Too many very bad experiences with liquor made me give it up for good.

I've picked up Balvenie a couple of times. If you like it, I recommend Aberlour's 10yo offering. To me, it has a lot more flavor than the Balvenie. They are roughly the same price, but Aberlour has started to grow in popularity and price.

As for the Blue Label. You speak the truth. It is amazing stuff. I had a couple glasses a few months back when I was being schmoozed by a sales guy over dinner. Never actually possessed a bottle. Maybe when I win the lottery.

jamesUMD 01-26-2005 04:36 PM

No liquor. Just Mad Dog and some forties of Hurricane and Old E.

General Mike 01-26-2005 04:48 PM

Nasty ass old liquor left over from my parents.

SunDancer 01-26-2005 08:02 PM

Few Questions:

When do you guys break out the liquor?
How is the flavored vodkas? I always wanted to try it, but want to hear some feedback first.
What exactly is malt and port?
