GSBGOSWUS!

I have a theory that any group or singer, no matter how bad they might be, is capable of producing one good song. One need look no further than Ugly Kid Joe or Modern English to see that this is true. In honor of these otherwise crappy performers, I have formed the "Good Songs By Groups Or Singers Who Usually Suck" Hall of Fame. Songs nominated for this dubious honor society can come from prolific groups who pump out crap in volume, or from those lovable one-hit wonders.

I'll start off the list:

Maggie May by Rod Stewart

ugly kid joe had a good song?

Deep Blue Something - Breakfast at Tiffany's

Pyser 01-27-2005 09:20 PM

i think you guys are just listing one-hit wonders. though its all subjective...

limp bizkit - re-arranged
dashboard - hands down
everclear - santa monica
hole - violet
bush - machinehead

DaddyTorgo 01-27-2005 09:38 PM

you're putting Bush, Everclear and Hole on that list?? I know a ton of fans who might disagree with you on all counts. I personally can only speak for Everclear, but they don't belong here. If anything, Santa Monica was one of their poorer songs, they have much much better stuff. And a lot of it.

General Mike 01-27-2005 09:43 PM

Glycerine is better than Machinehead, plus there were quite a few good songs on their Golden State LP.

You're killing me.

I think Sixteen Stone by Bush is one of the better CDs from my high school/college days. Everything Zen and Comedown were decent songs and, I think, Machinehead and (especially) Glycerine are pretty great songs.

Everclear is one of my favorite bands. Wonderful, Santa Monica, Buy You a New Life, Father of Mine, and their cover of Boys are Back in Town are some of my favorite songs from that period of music.

Pyser 01-27-2005 10:36 PM

well, like i said, its all subjective. but i dont think one hit wonders belong (dexy's midnight runners?)

i could be swayed on the bush front. ive gone to some of their shows, and they are a guilty pleasure. so i wont fight that.

everclear, though, i find to be a very simple band, who keeps releasing the same song (seemingly about the same thing, even). furthermore, it takes about 8 people on stage to replicate their 3-man setup in the studio, and they just sound horrible live. i *personally* find them to be a below average band, which is why they are on my list. obviously others will diagree, they have sold many albums. but its my list.

ill even add to it. once again, subjective:

eagles - hotel california
doors - light my fire
whitesnake - here i go again
duncan shiek - barely breathing
alien ant farm - glow
nickelback - how you remind me
butthole surfers - pepper
placebo - pure morning
nada surf - popular
lit - my own worst enemy
sinead o'conner - nothing compares to you
seal - kiss from a rose
phantom planet - california
dramarama - anything, anything
white stripes - fell in love with a girl

TLK 01-28-2005 02:55 AM

I was going to add Bush to the list much earlier with Glycerine.... but I guess the "machinehead" post proves us both wrong....

Ragone 01-28-2005 03:17 AM

How could you put alien ant farm on here.. without oh..

WTF? Rod Stewart has had dozens of great songs. How can like Maggie May and totaly disregard the rest of his catalog?

Samdari 01-28-2005 07:11 AM

The Doors??????

You really have no clue. Please never comment about music on this board again.

I am 100% with Kodos on this, and Maggie May is the best single example I cna think of that fits what he was thinking. Not one-hit wonders... but singular bona fide good songs by performers (I shudder to use words like "artist" with the likes of this assclown) who may well have had long successful careers, but basically churned out nothing but crap otherwise.

Yes, it's subjective. That's my opinion. Rod Stewart is and always was a complete no-talent, none of his popular songs are worth a shit, and music never gained anything from his presence, and now suffers through his dreadful renditions of other people's noble creations, further extending a career that should be long dead and making things even worse. Excelt for Maggie May, which is a darned good pop/rock song. Go figure.

Leonidas 01-28-2005 08:10 AM

Why Me? - Planet P (later name changed to Planet P Project after legal action from another band, but Planet P really wasn't a band at all but a studio project by a rather talented guy named Tony Carey, who despite his great talent never had any real commercial success except this one song)

Chubby 01-28-2005 08:13 AM

most of the picks are good selections but the Eagles, Bush, Everclear, The Doors and even nickelback don't belong in here IMO

Breeze 01-28-2005 08:22 AM

I don't happen to agree with what I'm about to say, in fact it makes me cringe to think others do, but I'd bet Peter Gabriel and "In Your Eyes" would fit this description for a number of people. Personally, I like his stuff, and I actually think a number of his songs that never get radio play are better than some of his hits.

Family Snapshot and The Intruder were fabulous tunes nobody has ever heard. Maybe we should do another thread on great songs that were never hits. IMO, Gabriel would have quite a few on that list.

because a cover doesnt count. singing someone else's already popular song does not make you a good band in my mind. and i personally didnt like movies.

the doors ive always found to be overrated, and i just plain dont like the eagles. so shoot me.

Some do, some don't...one hit wonders like In a Big Country by Big Country or Our House by Madness are ones I wouldn't put on the list because their other stuff wasn't crap. They didn't have any more 'hits', but they didn't put out crap, either. Now, EMF and Jesus Jones? Nothing but one good song, plus crap. They belong on the list.

The fact that you put Rod Stewart as your pick automatically nulls this Hall of Fame. Sorry....

Kodos 01-28-2005 01:00 PM

So you think Rod has put out numerous quality songs?

Numerous quality, no. But so say he usually sucks is a little bit of a blanket statement over his 30 plus years of music.

Maggie May was a great song, but along with that Hot Legs, You're In My Heart, Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?, Have I Told You Lately, and Reason To Believe are also some good ones to name a few. Maybe I'm biased since I was brought up listening to him along with all the other bands my dad enjoyed. But I can think of thousands of bands that suck more then he does. Plus I think even his takes on American standards that he has been doing lately are really well done as well.

Listing that as a good song disqualifies anything else you say regarding music.:p

Not arguing taste, I just can't see how you can consider Maggie May to be a great song and not stuff like Young Turks, Hot Legs, I Was Only Joking.

To me his entire catalog from that time period sort of all has the same structure and I love them all, but to each his own.
