This sucks

So my dad went to the hospital last weekend, with bad stomach pain. The docs ran some tests and told him he had appendicitis, so he had an appendectomy the last Saturday before this one. Came home Monday and all was well. Fast forward a week to today, and he again had bad cramps, tells my brother, who works with my dad. He went to the doctor and now the doctor is saying he probably didn't even need to get his appendix removed, as it is something else, but they don't know what. I realize that appendicitis is hard to pinpoint, but it sucks that he had to have surgery for no reason when it now appearing to be something else. He lost 5 pounds but looks alot thinner in the face and when I saw him Sunday looked like he aged about 5 years. I just hope it is nothing serious and he will be ok, I just want to know what is wrong with him.

Sorry for the rant..

CamEdwards 02-01-2005 08:24 PM

SackAttack 02-01-2005 08:32 PM

Ditto. I wonder if kidney stones would sound at all like the symptoms described?

Update:

They found a lump on one testicle, so they removed the testicle a few days later before even figuring out what it was - after all, he wasn't trying to have babies anymore anyway. Tests came back and indeed it was cancerous, my Dad had testicular cancer but that was removed. They wanted to run more tests to make sure it hadn't spread, and just yesterday he got results back and they said it had spread to the lymph nodes. Today he met with another doctor to discuss his options, and it seems the best option is radiation therapy. It was said he has a 90% survival rate. But of course, there is a catch. During the CAT scan they found a spot on his lung, and the doc doesn't know what it is. He said it might have spread to his lung, or it might be nothing altogether. Here's hoping it hasn't spread but I can't think positively after all that has happened so far, and if it is cancer in his lungs it's a whole different story..

It also makes me, my brother and my mom upset because instead of dropping everything to have the test done tomorrow, he's like "Well I'm going to Gatlinburg for the weekend so can we do it next week?", and the doc finally says sure, and then he says "Well the shop is going to be real busy for the few days after that so I don't know if I can miss a day", which is the point where my mom basically started crying and convinced him to havre the test Monday because he freakin' values work more than his own well being, it's ridiculous.

Anyways, finding out yesterday I was kind of in shock and I was emotional for the first time since I can remember. I guess I've always been scared of my parents dying but I never figured I would have to come to grips with it at this stage of my life. Hopefully it won't come to that, but I figure it's going to be a tough couple of months, and I appreciate a lot of you as friends here which is why I am saying all of this. Thank you all for your previous concern.

terpkristin 04-20-2005 02:16 PM

Dola... don't get too mad with your Dad over his flippant attitude towards these tests... he's just trying to deal with some pretty shitty news.

Raiders Army 04-20-2005 02:25 PM

Man, do what you need to do. Be patient and be strong for your family. We'll be thinking of you.

Franklin is right, your dad just got hit with a load of bad news, and if he gets those other tests he might be in for even worse news. I'd say fear is why he was trying to dilly dally in getting them done, work was just his excuse.

MizzouRah 04-20-2005 02:49 PM

Your dad will be in my prayers Shorty... keep us updated whenever you can.

Really sorry to hear the news. People take news in different ways, I think my grandpa just continued to watch the Niner game when they were basically telling him there was no cure for his cancer. I know my mom and rest of the family didn't react that way...I guess it just is that it's usually harder or maybe easier to accept (and therefore get emotional about) when you are not the one affected.

Anyway, my thoughts and prayers are with you, your dad, and your family.

vtbub 04-20-2005 03:37 PM

Wow. :(

Kodos 04-20-2005 03:55 PM

So sorry to hear this, Shorty. I hope he beats this and your family can help him during this very difficult time. :(

JeeberD 04-20-2005 04:43 PM

Stay strong, shortstuff. My pops went through chemo for leukemia not too long ago, and it can be rough. He'll need your love and support, so make sure you're there for him...

Flasch186 04-20-2005 04:58 PM

good luck cap'n.

dawgfan 04-20-2005 05:07 PM

Hang in there Shorty. Cancer is a scary word, but stay positive no matter what and appreciate the time you have with your dad.

Vince 04-20-2005 05:11 PM

I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts buddy. Good luck through this tough time.

GoldenEagle 04-20-2005 05:12 PM

My mom just had surgery to remove a cancer from her colon. She has recovered pretty well and is starting a six month chemo program. It is weird since she can not touch anything cold. It was really messed up when the doctors made mistake. She went through eight treatments of radiation when she did not need it. She has had a hard time finding reliable information.

Anyway, good luck to you and your Dad Shorty.

General Mike 04-20-2005 05:13 PM

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I know what you are going through.

Buccaneer 04-20-2005 05:52 PM

Too young to be having something like this happen to your dad. Take care, Shane.

Your father and you are in my prayers. When finding out they have cancer, people often experience denial. This might be why he is trying to use excuses to delay the test. In any case, You'll be in my prayers.
