I was flipping channels during a Lost commercial and I came across O'Reilly. He's talking about the controversial Arthur cartoon with a guy from Business Week. O'Reilly's talking about how the head woman at PBS needs to be fired for greenlighting the show even though she stopped it from being run, and it was independently distributed by the creator.

O'Reilly starts to argue that she has full control over all created content, every episode. The guy tells him no, actually most is independently produced and even so, she stopped it from being shown, she wouldn't allow it on PBS. O'Reilly however, said that the guy is wrong and she controls everything, and the guy is just using semantics, and that she could have stopped the independent company from distributing the show even though she stopped it from being on PBS. O'Reilly says her apologizing and not showing it in the first place is not enough, and that she needs to be fired.

O'Reilly is amazing. He's told he's totally wrong, the guy proves it, and O'Reilly completely ignores it and says that that its the woman's fault and that she should have prevented it from being shown on another channel.

I mean seriously, how can a person like that even take himself seriously?

What's more amazing is that there are people who watch his show and not because they are looking for some good UIC.

I would dislike O'Reilly a lot more if I thought he actually meant all that dumb stuff he says - in truth, he's just an attention whore, and I wish people would stop talking about him.

Apparently the Arthur cartoon is centered on a rabbit (Arthur?) going around the world and meeting people who live differently than the traditional US household (or something along those lines - I've never seen it myself). In one episode Arthur was to have met the daughter of a lesbian couple - and several members of the conservative establishment lost it the moment they heard about it. The storyline had leaked, and before it ever aired there were demands that the head of PBS resign over this travesty. PBS decided to yank the episode because of the uproar it generated, which caused the liberal establishment to get pissed off. And so PBS' CEO managed to piss off everyone over something that wound up never actually happening on PBS.

Of course, the episode wound up getting distributed by another company anyway.

And because of all of this the PBS CEO (I can't remember her name) has decided not to pursue a contract extension when it ends this year. Surprise, surprise.

Seriously, I use my tv as a babysitter, not as a sex education teacher. Wait.. I wasn't being serious there either.

Really though, is there anyone who thinks it's a lovely idea to introduce the concept of two chicks getting it on in a freaking children's cartoon? You want to highlight diversity or tolerance, have arthur visit a blind bunny or a narcoleptic ferret or something like that.

If your kid's best friend had gay parents, would you not let your kid visit the best friend's house because of it? Because there's not a bit of difference between that and what reportedly happens in this cartoon.

Correction to my above posts: the character's name is "Buster", not "Arthur".

I've seen lots of Arthur (not this Buster spinoff, though), and I don't recall see ANYONE getting it on in the show.

But I think I see what your saying, and I think it's a spectacular idea. What we really need is SELECTIVE Diversity. Being diverse is very important, but only certain aspects...because some diversity is bad.

He gets people to watch him, and to be the "attention" whore. I believe he just received a HUGE contract (I like to say $20 to $30 million). Not to say thats he a great journalist, but he gets ratings and knows how to work tv.

I can't stand Katie Couric anymore more then O'Reilly. She's the liberal version of O'Reilly.

Finally! Something liberals and conservatives can get together to support! In this case, what Cam says goes double for me.

I don't have any issue with the Buster cartoon and I would have no problem letting my kids watch it.

But at the risk of going off topic... have we really reached the point where all diversity is by defintion a good thing? Is it really no longer possible for something to be both diverse and bad? I can't be the only one who thinks that's a scary concept. Has the defintion of the word "diversity" just morphed to imply that only good things are diverse, or have we really reached a point where anything different must be good and worthy?

My kids watch Arthur. My biggest concern was the inter-species mating aspect to it. There's definitely some sexual tension between Arthur and one of the other characters that is definitely not a rabbit. I thought maybe this was what O'Reilly was upset about.

I thought Arthur was an aardvark? The rabbit is one of his friends.

Maybe, I never could figure out what any of them were supposed to be.

I think I confused things when I mentioned Arthur as the charcter in question. The cartoon is based on a character named Buster.

I must confess that I have no knowledge of either cartoon, and couldn't tell you what species they each belong to. But I'm with those who adamantly oppose inter-species breeding. That path can only lead to evil amalgamations of ill-matched protoplasm, such as the dreaded jackalope, that will inevitably corrupt our children and make them engage in questionable behavior like not finishing their dinners. This threat must be stopped immediately.
