Worst Phishing Scam Ever
 

Just got this in my email. First of all, I've never heard of WAMU Bank. Second of all, the page is hosted on an aol member site. WTF? Couldn't they try to hide it just a little better than that?

wow. that's pretty bad.

WAMU is short for Washington Mutual Bank.

Very poorly designed scam, but then again, I would think most people that get sucked in by these things aren't smart enough to look at the link at wonder about the address.

Of course, anyone with a brain knows that a bank wouldn't ask to give personal info like this over e-mail in the first place.

I almost fell for it until I realised they mispelled compromise. :D

However bad it is, some idiot, somewhere will fall for it.

Kids. Kids are downloading these kits and playing with them. If just a few people fall for it, they get to play with those profiles (or sell/trade them).

EDIT...It will be down shortly. I just showed the URL to someone that is a syadmin for AOL...although it is a funny try.

LOL they ask for your ATM card # and PIN to log in. hahahahahaha

Well, they've moved on to different banks now. But they're still on AOL.

Is there any money in proofreading phishing attempts? Good god... I would bold the errors but, unfortunately the entire message would be bolded.

Does anyone know if these people are ever prosecuted - at least the scams that originate in the US?

WaMu just started getting into the Chicago market, and they have ads EVERYWHERE. If you get WGN and watch that for a while, you're bound to see a few of their commercials.

Hey, give the WAMU guys a break. They ran it by their Bankers Pen and they thought it was a bad idea to ask for ATM and pin numbers so they had to do it. :D

Yeah, when I was out there last summer I opened a WAMU account, knowing it'd be easy to transfer stuff once I was back in Seattle.

What's funny about WAMU's expansion is that their ad campaigns in the late '80's/early '90's was all about how, unlike almost every other bank in the state, they weren't some "outsiders" from California moving into town but were the last Washington-based major bank in the state.

Are you saying you do not have those crazy "Banker" comercials on all the time?

no idea what commercials you are talking about. unless they're only on cable which I don't have. but I have never seen WAMU, here it is mostly TCF, US Bank, Wells Fargo

Like I said, if you get WGN, you'll see it. The commercials also star one of the Walters from Seinfeld. "Get well, get well soon, we wish you to get well!"

Along the lines of phishing, I get about 5-10 of these a day. Most of them from "jewelers" or "aritsts" or something like that. Apparently, in the UK, they can't write very well...

Anyone here asking themselves if these posts about WaMu have resulted in the WaMu banner ads that are now appearing on this very site?

very rarely, financial institutions and other businesses don't have the resources to spend on special investigation units and law enforcement will generally not touch stuff like this unless someone hands a slam dunk case to them.

Losses incurred by financial institutions are passed on to consumers in the form of higer fees (invisible). It is all just the cost of doing business. The real visible damage is the effect to a person who has their identity stolen and the 80 plus hours they spend trying to correct it. Not to mention the money paid restoring their identity.
