Bad Casting in Movies

I just saw a commercial for "Sahara" with Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz. "Sahara" is a book that was written by Clive Cussler. Cussler has a hero named Dirk Pitt that is like an American James Bond, and Pitt has a sidekick called Al Giordino. Giordino is supposed to be a stocky, muscular, Italian-American man in his early 40s.

So, who do they get to play the part of Giordino? Steve Zahn. Now, I like Zahn and think he is a pretty funny actor, but this casting is way off. The Dirk Pitt series has the potential to produce a number of sequels, so I am really surprised that they chose Zahn here.

Any other Cussler fans put off by this a little bit?

Any other good examples of horrendous miscastings in movies adapted from books?

Neuqua 03-09-2005 11:10 PM

Not a huge disaster but I still don't think of Tom Hanks when I think "Robert Langdon."

sovereignstar 03-09-2005 11:31 PM

I didn't like Jeff Daniels in the lead role of Arachnaphobia.

That was Jeff Bridges. You're thinking of The Rookie

Anything with, that's right, you guessed it: Frank Stallone

Wasn't Dennis Quaid the lead in "The Rookie"?

Fritz 03-10-2005 07:47 AM

Swaggs,

I read a review of Saharra and they are changing the Giordino character into a lazy, slacker - who will be used for comic relief. Not sure why, but they felt the story needed it.

Fritz 03-10-2005 07:53 AM

From a Cussler website:

"Cussler recently optioned all 14 of his novels featuring Dirk PittŪ to Crusader Entertainment with script and casting approval."

So he must have been okay with the change.

I think he must have been ok with the millions of dollars.

Ksyrup 03-10-2005 03:16 PM

There's an ad for this movie on ESPN's college basketball scores page, and Cruz and Zahn's names are under the wrong pictures. Kinda funny.

What the hell are you talking about? Jeff Daniels was in Arachnaphobia and I'll be damned if I'm going to stand for it!

sovereignstar 03-10-2005 03:22 PM

Dammit! I knew I was spelling Arachnophobia wrong.

Critch 03-10-2005 03:26 PM

The one where they had two of the Wayans brothers playing white females. I mean, come on, are you telling me they couldn't find some white females to play those parts?

I never new there actually were Cussler fans.
I always learn something when I come to this board.

The orangutan from Dunston Checks in

LastWhiteSoxFanStanding 03-10-2005 03:35 PM

Keanu Reeves in Much Ado About Nothing.

JasonC23 03-10-2005 03:46 PM

Keanu Reeves in pretty much anything.

tategter 03-10-2005 03:47 PM

Sylvester Stallone in Judge Dredd - ruined one of my favorite comic book characters

Michael Keaton in the first two Batman movies - ruined the other one

Airhog 03-10-2005 04:31 PM

What about that guy that was in the punisher? I think he was a store clerk or something. That guy stunk

WrongWay 03-11-2005 07:07 AM

I got it. The untimate bad casting.....The great White Hype.

This movie is about Boxing's Heavyweight Championship of the World and its quest for a white contender.

Tha champ: Damon Wayans as James 'The Grim Reaper' Roper
The Challenger: Peter Berg as Terry Conklin

I don't think both these guys put together could tip the scales enough to qualify as a Heavyweight.

WrongWay 03-11-2005 07:10 AM

Comming soon.....

Could some please explain to me the Part Adam Sandler is going to play in the remake of the longest Yard?

BTW----The script for RoadHouse was originally written for Sylvester Stallone. That is how come they kept saying "I thought you would be bigger". Swayze got the part at the last minute when they could not meat Stallones asking price.

Ksyrup 03-11-2005 07:12 AM

Stallone refused to eat anything less than prime rib on the set?

Swaggs 03-11-2005 09:55 AM

I'm looking forward to the Longest Yard, actually.

I guess rather than thinking of it as a remake, I'll be thinking of it as a SNL production movie about (one of my favorite subjects) football. :)

I'd be more put off by Matthew McConaughey as the lead character. I haven't read the books, but a wanna be texas stoner doesn't really seem to me like the American James Bond.

BTW - I always thought an old Harrison Ford was a bad casting job for the Jack Ryan roles as well.

As opposed to say Ben Affleck?

moriarty 03-11-2005 12:50 PM

I liked the younger Alec Baldwin in Hunt for Red October ... and honestly didnt' mind Ben at the time. Please don't hold that against me though.

Keanu Reeves as Jonathan Harker in Bram Stoker's Dracula. Excruciating.

I, too, liked Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan in The Hunt for Red October.

moriarty 03-11-2005 08:54 PM

How about Will Smith in Wild Wild West playing the Robert Conrad role. Ugh.

Karlifornia 03-12-2005 01:01 AM

What about Eddie Murphy playing not only Dr. Sherman Klump, but also playing his alter ego: Buddy Love?!? One role would be challenging enough, but the fact that they had him play two characters kind of ruined it for me. They cast the rest of the Klump family well, though.

Val Kilmer was a very good Batman, very moody and dark (like the character was written to be.) George Clooney always reminds me of the handyman on Facts of Life, no matter what role he plays.

Me too. He's a very good actor. Too bad he didn't do the other films.

Swaggs 03-12-2005 03:39 PM

I think Kilmer was the best Batman, too.

Speaking of Clooney. He would probably be the perfect choice to play Dirk Pitt. He or Travolta both have the "cool" factor, but Clooney's age makes him a better fit.

I'm not sure who best fits the profile of Giordino, but I know it isn't Steve Zahn. :)

Nah, Mr. Mom played a great Batman.

Though, in all fairness, he DID have the 2 good movies to work with.
