Quote:

Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr., the masterful attorney who gained prominence as an early advocate for victims of police abuse, then achieved worldwide fame for successfully defending football star O.J. Simpson on murder charges, died this afternoon. He was 67.

Cochran died at his home in the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles of an inoperable brain tumor, according to his brother-in-law Bill Baker. His wife and his two sisters were with him at the time of his death.

Cochran, his family and colleagues were secretive about his illness to protect the attorney's privacy as well as the network of Cochran law offices that largely draw their cache from his presence. But Cochran confirmed in a Sept. 2004 interview with The Times that he was being treated by the eminent neurosurgeon Keith Black at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

It's to bad for Michael Jackson that he wasn't defending him, otherwise they could declare a mistrial.

digamma 03-29-2005 05:29 PM

I played basketball in a lawyer's league against his firm's team last night.

Qwikshot 03-29-2005 05:29 PM

His Chewbacca defense was legendary.

tanglewood 03-29-2005 05:29 PM

I must admit thinking 'Didn't he die a while ago?'. Than I realised I was confusing him with Eddie Cochran.

So.... who is (was) he?

Its a shame to see someone who was passionate to defend what he saw as justice die from such a thing. The world is a less spirited place now I think.

Franklinnoble 03-29-2005 05:43 PM

I had no idea he was ill.

You got a subscription to their "Celebrity death announcements" service or something?

SunDevil 03-29-2005 05:46 PM

I have not see him on TV for a while and now we know why. The last time I saw him was on Larry King Live about the Scott Peterson case which was a year or two ago.

Jerry Falwell in Critical Condition

Okay, thats 2 celebs likely to die. These things come in 3, who's next?
Shiavo---Though inevitable.

JonInMiddleGA 03-29-2005 06:14 PM

Hmm ... I didn't realize he was 67.

EagleFan 03-29-2005 06:16 PM

Lawyers never die, they just get called back to the place in hell from where they came.

Not if you're using Firefox with the bugmenot extension.

It allows you to access newspaper sites without creating an annoying account. When you get to the point where it asks you for a username and password you can just right click and then choose "bugmenot" from the right click menu. Then it automaticaly creates a username and password for you and then you'll be able to access the site.

I'm not sure if this just works on newspaper sites or others where they have you create a free user account.

You can download the extension at the link that JeeberD supplied.

I had two immediate thoughts:

1. I had no clue he was ill. He did a great job of keeping it quiet.

2. That Boy Scout pedophile guy has got to be really, really happy that something stole the spotlight for the next day or so.

Unless that's who he was planning on hiring.

Ksyrup 03-29-2005 07:38 PM

I don't think that guy is going to put up much of a fight. The prosecutor said he expected a guilty plea, and the guy's attorney made the comment that his client is "not taking this well. I've got to tell you, this is a good man, and I would hate to see the entirety of his life and the good things he's done defined by one incident."

That's as close to a "my client's guilty" statement as an attorney will ever make.

The Pope?

I hear his medical staff is considering equipping him with a feeding tube, as he's having trouble swallowing food. And really, how much longer can that poor guy go on? It is amazing what he has managed to live through.

The other one I've read tonight:

If the coffin fits,
You must've quit.
