Who Will Be The Next Pope

Get your brackets in.

--------------------------------------------------

rkmsuf 04-14-2005 09:30 AM

Tough matchup for the 6 seed facing the 3 seed Danneels from Belgium who can really shoot the 3.

scooper 04-14-2005 09:30 AM

I was gonna say Ratzinger as well. I just don't want to take anyone from Italy, the ACC of this bracket.

Ragone 04-14-2005 09:30 AM

I'm taking ratzinger.. the 6 seed outta the europe bracket

QuikSand 04-14-2005 09:34 AM

Duke just gets all the calls. I'll take Tettamanzi.

gottimd 04-14-2005 09:34 AM

I am thinking DUKE, because no one of those guys can match up religously against them. But in the end, my money will be on Scola, the #6 seed out of Italy. He is definitely a diaper dandy baby, dark horse potential, cinderella pope run!

Are there any sites you can bet on this (post actual odds here too)? I would try at work, I think Betonsports.com but I don't think I can get to it.

Peregrine 04-14-2005 09:35 AM

Ratzinger was way underseeded, he's dangerous and poised to make a run.

Ragone 04-14-2005 09:35 AM

Wait these brackets are flawed.. no way a 8 and a 1 could play in the sweet sistine

SirFozzie 04-14-2005 09:36 AM

Must resist.. smiling.... at Religious Puns.

timmynausea 04-14-2005 09:37 AM

Regardless of the outcome I think this will end up being some of the best poping most of us have ever seen.

Critch 04-14-2005 09:39 AM

Father Ted looks a serious outsider, since he's dead already.

The German is coming back strong after slipping a bit, must be some smart money heading his way. As the week has gone on the non-Europeans have generally been slipping. Don't miss out on the Papacy Prophesy Doubles.

Peregrine 04-14-2005 09:40 AM

It's definitely a solid group of Popefuls.

Tigercat 04-14-2005 09:44 AM

You have to believe a team of blue devils lead by another polish catholic can take the hosts down from the tabernacles at the end of this tourny.

They were discussing the odds put up by some Irish bookmakers on "Hardball" a couple nights ago, but I don't know where specifically they were getting the info from.

For my money, the European bracket is stacked.

KeyserSoze 04-14-2005 10:17 AM

I vote for Rouco Varela. Just imagine a pope called Rocco I

if any of us here could affect the outcome, id have to go with keyser soze.

Peregrine 04-14-2005 10:22 AM

This is the Irish one that was mentioned, it was also mentioned in the NYT. Big money future speculators, with at least a million riding on the outcome of the Papal Conclave.

digamma 04-14-2005 11:01 AM

What kind of committee makes the first seed play the third seed in the second round?

I'll take Ratzinger.

KeyserSoze 04-14-2005 11:13 AM

Could you imagine that the pope is awarded a la "Ultimate Fighter"??

MMMM "The ultimate Pope" Raztzinger vs Scola . It will be the program of the year

Bee 04-14-2005 11:19 AM

I'm assuming the odds are against a repeat?

Swaggs 04-14-2005 11:24 AM

I like the titles to the rounds. Ecumemnical Eight. :)

There hasn't been a repeat in any of these religious things since Jesus came back. (He was way behind on good friday, and it looked like he was done for sure.)

Scarecrow 04-14-2005 01:12 PM

 What?????

Must have been a serious upset since #7 Ennio Antonelli of Italy didn't make the Sweet Sistine.

CHEMICAL SOLDIER 04-14-2005 02:36 PM

Bah! I'm gonna go with Father McKittrick from D.C. as my DarkHorse to take it all.

PilotMan 04-14-2005 08:48 PM

Prolly not going to happen, but it sounds good.

Pope RuPaul I

CHEMICAL SOLDIER 04-14-2005 10:38 PM

Who are the diaper dandies? In order to make a decision I need to have a lixt of the mid major dioses that can field a champ.

Shkspr 04-14-2005 10:54 PM

The diaper dandies would be any of the over-80s who aren't allowed to vote.

Maradiaga got screwed in the seeding. The man can do it all.

Not true. There has been a three-time winner.

Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga got screwed by the selection committee. They sent him all the way to the Italy region.

vyshka 04-15-2005 10:45 AM

Man, father Guido Sarducci didn't make it to the sweet sistine? That's a shame.

Good call, do they have any pictures of him cutting down the nets as we speak?

digamma 04-19-2005 12:33 PM

Pope John Paul II is dead
and there you are
you're running for pope
you're a shooting star
And all the years
no one knows
just how hard you worked
but now it shows...
(in) ONE SHINING MOMENT, IT'S ALL ON THE LINE
ONE SHINING MOMENT, THERE FROZEN IN TIME

But conclave is short
and the popedom is long
in the puff of white smoke
ah that moment's gone
And when it's done
win or lose
you always did your best
cuz inside you knew...
(that) ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU REACHED DEEP INSIDE
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU KNEW YOU WERE ALIVE

Feel the beat of your heart
feel the wind in your face
it's more than a contest
it's more than a race...

And when it's done
win or lose
you always did your best
cuz inside you knew...
(that) ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU REACHED FOR THE SKY
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU KNEW
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU WERE WILLING TO TRY
ONE SHINING MOMENT....

I would give anything to see the replay of the conclave while the song is playing.
