PING: Boston-Area FOFC'ers

I'll be in Boston for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners meetings from June 11 through the 14th. I'm flying in late on Friday the 10th, and probably will be busy all weekend, but desperately want to get tickets to the Red Sox game Monday night, the 13th, against the Reds. I leave Tuesday morning.

Since it's an interleague game, I assume tickets might be harder to come by than usual (although I hear there might be 7 tickets available down the right-field line :) ). However, I'm wondering if anyone wants to try to organize a get-together for the game that night, especially anyone who has a way to get tickets?

Let me know! I've never met anyone from here, so I think it would be pretty cool to put some faces with some names.

SirFozzie 04-19-2005 08:27 AM

Hmmm.. Don't know if I could get tickets, but that sounds cool

Ksyrup 04-19-2005 08:31 AM

I'm going to be staying at the Westin Copley Place, I think. Not sure where that is from anywhere. The meetings are at the Marriott, which should be about a block away.

McSweeny 04-19-2005 03:25 PM

i have no way of getting tickets, but if you do get a bunch i'd be down for a game

The Westin is in Copley Square. Fenway is a 5 minute Green Line ride. Maybe a 15-20 minute walk.

This just seems like it's going to be a rocking good time. :)

CraigSca 04-19-2005 03:36 PM

Aren't all the games sold out? We scored some tickets last year, but had to pay outlandish fees to sit in the luge box behind homeplate - $110 a pop. I think it'll be very difficult to get a lot of people sitting together...

Oh it will be. It's fun to sit in on committee meetings where they're still arguing over the same "a/the" language in a proposed model act that they discussed in September of 2003.

Actually, there's always some "hot button" issue that makes for an interesting time. A couple of years ago it was credit scoring, this year, of course, it's contingent commissions and finite reinsurance.

Thrilling, I know. You can hardly contain yourselves.

Are they? Oh well. Back in 1999, my wife and I drove up to Boston and I had purchased some tickets online for a game, and got quite good seats. But that was during the Duquette years...

DaddyTorgo 04-19-2005 03:46 PM

ebay my friend. ebay is the way to go. i have no such tickets, but would be down for any such get together before/after said game, and if tickets were found i'd purchase

I work right next to that - funnily enough. Yeah, good luck with tickets- start scouring craigslist now.

RendeR 04-19-2005 04:14 PM

I'd be up for this get together, along with telle!

kmbgolf 04-19-2005 04:21 PM

stubhub.com

Celeval 04-19-2005 04:44 PM

Yeah - stubhub.com usually has tickets. Expensive, but tickets.

Ebay or a ticket broker. It shouldn't be too hard to tickets to a Reds game. Bleacher seats are relatively inexpensive compared to the rest of the park. Although I don't know if I'd bring my wife there.

RendeR 04-19-2005 05:26 PM

I'm finding a wide range of tickets, one set of 8 on ebay for $525, upper grandstand, section 7

anyone know if thats a decent price?

McSweeny 04-19-2005 05:55 PM

if we're going to do this, then we should sit in the bleach seats. Tons of fun out there and the cheapest seats in the house

You'll get in...just a matter of how much you want to pay.

If there's no get together and it's just you, show up to the park right around first pitch. Someone will unload a ticket on you.

Ksyrup 04-20-2005 08:30 AM

I'm up for a group deal, if anyone else is willing.

KevinNU7 04-20-2005 08:49 AM

Ksyrup as someone who is a "diehard" and goes to about 25 games a year I can tell you that attempting to purchase more then 4 tickets togehter through any agency is going to be very expensive. You are better off getting tickets on your own and then finding a location inside the park to all meet up for beers before first pitch. Or meet at a bar pre/post game.

Also, another option is to wait in line for day-of-sales. For Interleague games that will mean obstructed views and standing room. Day-of-sales start 90 minutes before the game and you must enter the Park as soon as you purchase your tickets. Since it is a Monday night game you could probably get in line an hour before the gates open (so 4:30/5:00) and be reasonably sure that you will get atleast standing room. That might be your best bet and you will only be paying like $20 per ticket.

I'll have to check my schedule but I might be down for this game.

Ksyrup 04-20-2005 09:01 AM

I don't mind paying more than $20 for an actual seat. I guess if we can't get seats together, oh well.

The last two places I lived in with MLB teams were South Florida and Atlanta (from 1985-1990). I'm not used to actually having to fight for seats...

KevinNU7 04-20-2005 09:03 AM

They don't have slight mark ups hear. The Markups are HUGE. Oh by the way, Section 7 is horrible if you are in a numbered row.

Ksyrup 04-20-2005 09:05 AM

Just clicking on a couple of the links from ESPN's schedule for the Sox (after you click on the tickets link), I saw some Grandstand seats, in groups of 4, for about $55-$60 each. Now, I have no clue how bad those seats are, but that's not an outrageous price. At least, not for someone like me who's coming from out of town and never gets to see live MLB baseball, especially in Fenway.

rkmsuf 04-20-2005 09:09 AM

You may be healthy and obiese but one thing you aren't is fitting well into a seat at Fenway lawyer boy.

My wife and I went to a game there in 1999. My wife was 5-6 months pregnant at the time. She might as well have caught fire while in surgery. Not exactly comfortable for her.

I know about the seats. And the fact that they're facing straight out to the field. And the poles that make what would be decent seats at field level suck like SRO.

rkmsuf 04-20-2005 09:14 AM

Personally I'm in the tear it down camp but I guess that's not happening anytime soon. The rats were heard rejoicing.

Ksyrup 04-20-2005 09:16 AM

I think when we were there, they were handing out all sorts of propaganda about what they could do with a new park, if I recall. It had "artist renderings" of the new Fenway with the Green Monster, etc. I guess that ship has sailed...

KevinNU7 04-20-2005 09:20 AM

The ticekts available for $60 will have a pole either blocking the pitcher or homeplate. If you wanna pay $60 for that be my guest. Grandstands are very random, they can be great or horrible.

rkmsuf 04-20-2005 09:21 AM

There a whole group of weirdos called Save Fenway. I'll bet none of them go to more than 1 game every 5 years to renew their nostalgia.

I'm surprised you didn't get their flyers.

It's next to impossible to get anything done with the Boston politicians. The only reason the Pats go a new stadium is because Kraft said f-it and used all his own money.

SirFozzie 04-20-2005 09:31 AM

Plus the Fenway Seats aren't exactly modern person friendly. *laughs*

henry296 04-20-2005 07:14 PM

Threadjack,

I am looking at stubhub.com and see some seats in Section 38. They are very high up, like Row 35. Is there a risk of pole sitting out in the outfield. They are $70 for the Braves game in May. There are also seats in Section 43. Any thoughts from the locals on those 2 sections.

And he still had to build it 40 miles outside of Boston.

Ksyrup 05-03-2005 07:29 AM

Hey guys, I'm confirmed (got plane tickets and everything) for Boston and still want to go to the Red Sox/Reds game on that Monday night. I found a single ticket on ebay that looks pretty good - lower level on the 3rd base side, $80 (plus shipping). Based on what I've seen, this appears to be a good deal (it says face value). Can anyone confirm?

Desnudo 05-03-2005 12:34 PM

I don't know how up to date my information is, but iirc, that might be in the alcohol-free family zone. Something worth checking on if you'd like to have a beer there.

JeeberD 05-03-2005 12:36 PM

Based on the "Why wouldn't you drink?" thread, I don't think it's going to be a problem for him...

:D

Yeah, not a problem. In fact, it might increase my chances of buying the ticket. How far away are the sloppy drunks who scream incessantly throughout the game?

Desnudo 05-03-2005 01:16 PM

The other side of the field

Ksyrup 06-08-2005 10:16 PM

My trip almost got canceled, but it looks like things are a go. I'll be in Boston, staying at the Westin Copley Place, Friday night until Tuesday morning. Never bought a ticket to the game, but I also see that Marillion is playing on Monday night, which is equally attractive. Will see what develops. Seeing as though I'll be surrounded by a bunch of 40-60 year old insurance execs, I assume my best chance of going somewhere with someone woud be the ball game, not a concert.

If anyone is interested in getting together, let me know!

BTW, what should I expect to pay for a cab ride from the airport to the Westin? I hate carrying much cash, but for cabs, it's a necessity.

Desnudo 06-08-2005 10:27 PM

Great location, you're right in the thick of things. It's short cab ride distance wise, so the fare would depend on traffic. It should be less than $30 though, much less if you're arriving when there's less traffic.

I think we need a FOFC-based pain and discomfort scale.

McSweeny 06-09-2005 11:33 AM

if you plan on buying a ticket from a scalper, be prepared to spend at least 50 bucks per which is what bleacher seats were going for when i was up there last Friday

Ksyrup 06-13-2005 11:33 AM

This weather is balls. Which is to say, I feel like I'm at home. I was thinking this would be a nice escape from the hot and humid weather of Tallahassee...WRONG!

I've decided to go see Marillion a the Paradise Rock Club tonight. I think it's an acoustic set. Should be cool.

rkmsuf 06-13-2005 11:34 AM

last day of the really hot weather today

Crapshoot 06-13-2005 11:35 AM

I'm in the big building next to you.. ;)

check out craigslist- make a serious cash offer to one of them, and they'll probably bite.

Thanks, but I'm going to see Marillion. I think I'd rather see a concert than a ballgame at this point. Some FSU sports are closer to pro-level than the concerts we get. Plus, I have no interest in sitting outside in this humid shit weather. Even at night.
