Mike Williams???

OK. Let's start the excuses for Harrington...

1. Mike Williams was a rookie who hadn't played football for a year. After a year under his belt he will really be ready.

2. Rogers was essentially a rookie after his first two seasons were lost. He'll really be ready.

3. If the Lions had taken Alex Barron he would have solidified the line and been able to protect Joey. Then, Joey would have had the breakout season.

4. If his receivers had only stayed healthy...

5. Having to look over his shoulder at Garcia all season didn't help him.

6. Look at how Drew Brees improved when a veterain like McCardell came in. What Joey needs is an accomplished veterain to throw to instead of all these young guys with "potential."

7. It's the offense. The Lions need to play to Joey's strength, instead of a passing game that relies on accuracy.

8. If the Lions could only put some talent around him...

9. Tedford should be the offensive coordinator. He knows Joey.

10. Next year will be his breakout year. Wait 'til next year...

11. He sucks.

If Millen grabs Justin Tuck in the second round.... I'll forgive him.

I think it was a great pick, since he was the best guy left on the board BY FAR. I wouldn't be suprised if Millen is sitting back taking offers on Williams as we speak. Even if we keep him, it provides us with yet another game-breaker, which is the best thing to get when you can.

I'm not actually sure what to make of Joey. I'm starting to think there's a strong possibility he just isn't very good. I think he could be decent with all these good recievers, though. Maybe I'm wrong and he'll turn out to be pretty good.

I'm also in the camp that Mike Williams was a great pick. I've just become a Lions fan if they keep him (although I'd still root for the Eagles or the Saints over the Lions.)

I like Mike Williams ... just not sure he was the best pick for Detroit.

It's funny. The last time the Lions took a WR at #10, it turned out pretty well: Herman Moore. Williams reminds me a whole lot of Moore. I hope Williams turns out to be like Herman.

Not entirely. Sure, Joey throws the ball where the receiver has to sacrifice his body to make a play, but if it wasn't for the defense, the ground, the frail human body, and physics I am sure Joey's receivers could stay healthy and he could have a marvelously medeocre career.

He has been badmouthing him for a week. He basically says Williams is only going to be a slow possession receiver who won't be able to be successful unless he has an explosive receiver opposite him. He thinks Williams shouldn't have been taken til the end of the 1st round.

Well, he obviously knows more than 31 head scouts. I mean, the man is a genius.

Mike Williams is an excellent player but, like everyone else has said, the Lions have more pressing needs.

I'd say that's close to being correct except for the 'end of the 1st round part'. Williams doesn't have the skill set of Moss or Owens, but I do think he brings a skill set similar to Michael Irvin...and that's not bad at all. He's got great hands, good size and he's shown a knack for getting to the ball. I think he'll be an above average receiver, but he's not going to be a game breaker like the top tier receivers in the league.

Actually, if you have followed the Lions off-season, they don't really have any "glaring" holes.

True. Harrigington is a pussy. Garcia will be the QB by the end of the 4-5 week.

I don't think he said end of the 1st round, I believe he said he should be picked in the 4th round. He also said he would be out of the league, playing in the CFL, within 2 years. In response Mel Kiper told Merril that he was an idiot and Williams will be going to the Hall of Fame.

It was an interesting pick for sure. It's a lot of money to invest in one position and it will be interesting to see if they can spread the ball around enough for everyone. The Lions had a horrible time converting on third down and scoring TD's in the red zone. M. Williams should help considerably in both areas.

I am not sure what it says about how the Lions feel about C. Rogers. Maybe they are more concerned with his Mr. Glass type body than they let on. R. Williams also has trouble staying healthy.

The pick surprised the hell out of me, but I am ok with it. Shaun Cody was a solid pick and will help improve the defense. Though I was hoping Brodney Pool would slip to them. They need a free safety with good range. Not sure if Holt is that guy.

Well QB is one position they could have looked at but I think the addition of Mike Williams is better than the addition of any of the QBs left on the board. I think they could have certainly addressed needs at DL and DB. Dre Bly isn't exactly young and they will need to find his successor.

The Lions feel like they are "ok" on the DL with Hall, Redding, Rogers, and Wilkinson. Shaun Cody addresses their need there. He's pretty versitaille and can play DT or DE if necessary, like Redding.

Bly isn't that old. He's still under 30, so it's early yet to be contemplating his replacement. I think the Lions may have gone DB with that pick if any of Pac-man, Antrell Rolle, or Carlos Rogers were availble at the 10 spot. None of them were, so...

If you have to ask, you probably are one.

That statement is what hurt Mike this draft....The kid can game, and he, out of any of the WR's ran the smoothest, and most crips routes.

Braylon has more raw talent, Williams understands the mechanics of the position, and honestly, some of the top WR's of the game weren't fast, they just understood the mechanics of their position.

If the dumbass Harrington (I WAS PISSED, when the Lions drafted him) can get the ball to the WR's this year without setting them up for the punishment, the Lions will have one hell of a year offensively.

I still worry about their Defense, I don't think they have done right there. But who knows.

Well, the Lions address the "developmental QB" situation by trading with NE and taking Orlovsky that QB from U-Conn. I was hoping they'd take McPherson with that pick, but oh well...

I wasn't betting on us drafting McPherson, so I wasn't suprised. Har.

My bad. Hoge is even more of a tool than I thought in that case.

I'm guessing this was a "butts in the seat" type of pick, something that would potentially excite the fan base with the possibilities. I speculate that this means that for one year, they'll all be together and then one of them will be dealt depending on performance. When does Rogers go into free agency?

Harrington blows and blows. you'll get no argument from me about that.

However, this Three WR set they have now is perfectly tailored to Garcia, if anyone is believeing Joey will be the starter they are just going along with the PR stichk.

I am a little tired of the Harrington (and Boller) bashing.

First off the excuses do have some merit to them. Second, it takes some time for guys. Some a little more then others. How many guys remember how great Trent Green and Rich Gannon were their first 3 years, or 6 years (yes I know they were not first round picks, and those guys have higher expectations)? Now, don't get all nuts on me. I am not saying they are good or great, but I do think now that their teams have upgraded the players around them a little more they should get one more good chance.

I think the Drew Brees comparison could be a fair one here, since he was considered crap by fans (and others) and was on his way out. But the team got a little better as a whole, and he finally started putting into play what he had learned over the previous 3 seasons.

I would give both Harrington and Boller a fair shot going into this season. If halfway through they are still sucking like before, then go ahead and bash them. Just keep starting them because the Packers play both Detroit and this season Baltimore. :D

The Packers play the Lions every year..they are in the same division....
