College Football History, Relegation Style
This will be a historic replay of college football histroy with one littly, tiny twist. It will be done relegation style. That's right! Teams will be broken up into conferences much like in the English world of soccer. The best teams move up, the worst teams move down
The Setup College Platinum Conference (CPC) - The top conference. 12 teams. Bottom 2 teams get relegated to the CGC. College Gold Conference (CGC) - The second top conference. 12 teams. The top 2 teams get promoted into the CPC and the bottom 2 go down to the CSC. College Silver Conference (CSC) - The third top conference. 12 Teams. The top 2 teams get promoted to the CGC. The bottom team gets relegated out. We start in 1900, with 41 teams. 36 are in conferences, leaving 5 independant teams. The Independant with the best record enters the CSC. The Schedule Each team plays each other once. That gives us an 11 game schedule for the regular season. In the independants, they will all play each other twice for an 8 game schedule. Each conference then plays a 6 team tournament, with the top 2 teams getting byes, for the conference championship. The games in these tournements count towards the final record and standings. Then, we go to the big tournement. A 32 team tournement. The setup for the 1900 season will be every team, seeded by conference and then record, that was not relegated. That gives up 31 teams. The last spot will be taken by the independant team with the best record. The games played in this tournement do not count towards records and standings. The Game The game I will be using to do this will be Quick Play Football, an "excel and dice" game I found on www.tabletop-sports.com. Each team gets a few ratings and that's it. So no rosters or stats will be kept. It's just scores and records. Each team that finishes first in their conference will receive a +1 bonus to all of their values for the next season. If ia team is not rated the following year, they retain the values they had the previous season, but with a -1 penalty to all of them. |

In the end, I expect it will come down to Yale and Iowa, which were both unbeaten in my 1900 replay. |

I'll go ahead and call a shot for 1901. If Michigan doesn't get out of the second division after this year, they'll slaughter everyone and everything en route to a 13-0 mark and the conference title next year. About the only team I can see stopping them is Harvard. It wasn't Fielding Yost's "point-a-minute" squad for nothing.

How do you intend to handle promotion/relegation with respect to schools that don't consistently field teams, especially during these first few years when teams are in one year but not the next? Are they considered to have been "relegated" if they drop out for a year (or longer), thus sparing another team the axe or what?
