Goodbye Shelby Foote

Thanks for the books that got me interested in history.

Oh no, hadn't heard this yet.

I just recently began reading the Narrative again, and watched the Ken Burns' civil war documentary.

Very sad to hear this.

It's rare that any author gets a publisher to wait 20 years for a work... and then for it to not only meet, but exceed expectations... truly a brilliant accomplishment.

He will be missed...

Amen. Rest in Peace Shelby knowing you sparked the interest of many people in the Civil War and history in general. Sparked me so much that I studied that time period in detail and hope to teach it to others.

May he rest in peace. I bet he's living in that time period in the afterlife. Experiencing what he wrote about.

Saw this today and grieved. I was waiting until I finished the series (just over halfway through) to write him a letter thanking him for his contribution to literature. Guess I just read a little too slow. His is a loss for American letters, and while the vast majority of Americans will never know his name or work, those of us who do offer our sincere appreciation.

Kind of a morbid thought. I hope the afterlife isn't war. Unless he's a Viking of course.

Rest in peace.

Although Mr. Foote comes from the Douglas S. Freeman mode of Civil War literature, he gets the credit for getting many interested in reading about this fascinating conflict and history in general. For the baby boomers, we had Bruce Catton and for the next generation, we had Shelby Foote along with Ken Burns and James McPherson. Good company indeed.
