My guess is that you just go in and when you try to go to a web page, their wireless provider's web page will come up, and it will take your credit card info.

Wireless Hotspots are usually fairly simple to connect to. Often you only have to turn on the laptop and connect to an available wireless network. Once you connect, a Web page will usually come up to authenticate so you can login or sign-up. It's fairly seemless.

I did have to call T-Mobile from a Starbucks once, but that's because I couldn't get it figured out and had to manually configure it.

Otherwise, it's simple. The best are the free hotspots.

I don't follow. I know I'm cool, but what was it that I said?

Probably referring to your calling Barnes and Noble, Barnes and Nobles.

No, it was him calling it "Barnes" and me agreeing with your assessment and putting in some conjecture of my own as to why he called it as such.
