Hollywood's Profit/Loss
 

Why is Hollywood constantly complaining about losing money on film? Well, I though i'd look at the various box office reports and come up with a general figure on movies that cost at least 30 million to make and see if they probably turned a profit or not this summer (basing it on the generally accepted value that studios receive about 55% of a movie's total gross). So basically by adding the domestic and worldwide gross, dividing by 55%, then subtracting the budget, we'll see how much money hollywood is actually losing. (Note, I haven't done this yet, so the results you see, I see). G = Rotten Tomato Grade.

So what does any of this mean? Yes there have been some busts, but they are The Island, Stealth and Sahara, 3 films that never should have been made. I mean, greenlighting a $130 million dollar Matthew McConaughey desert epic? 11 of 14 movies have turned a profit, with Sky High, Must Love Dogs, Charlie and maybe Dukes probably getting close. Strangely, 2 of the top 4 rated films listed have not turned a profit, with 3 of the lowest 5 rated turning a profit. It seems that its more budget control than anything that is hurting Hollywood. 88 million for Cinderella man? But I guess they're thanking their lucky stars for Star Wars, because without that monster, studios averaged about 13 million less in profits per movie. And no, this does not include smaller films like Hustle and Flow, Penguins or Crash. It just goes to show you the type of profits you can turn on good movies.

I heard Crash is really good.

It was alright. Actually, it was good, but I was disappointed due to all the hype. It's really contrived and manipulative at times.

There are some fine ladies in it, though.

The studios make like 20% of their revenue via the box office. They won't be too worried about any slowdown at the BO unless they start to seep into TV rights and DVD money. They can pretty much afford to let theatrical releases be extended marketing campaigns for those markets.
