I just find this story humorous on so many levels, Chavez is always making these wacky, incendiary statements to boost his support on the home front, and it's funny because hey, it's Venezuela, not North Korea. Plus, we're being threatened by a guy that looks like this??

The question you should ask yourself is why this was even mentioned by him and why did it get such a positive response from the crowd...

Considering the slogan of the affair was - 'Against Imperialism and War' and they were touting socialist views at the rally... can't say I'm shocked by him popping off with this statement.

Be about the equivalent of someone saying 'Seven of Nine has big tits' at a Star Trek convention... unusual statement to be made but, given the circumstances, not shocking and yet comical...

I'm fully against the US invading Venezuela now as this comment could lead to FOX and/or CNN playing "Another one bites the dust" by Queen over and over, and I hate that song.

The US already tried to depose him in 2002 by backing a coup against him. The administration immediately recognized the new government they tried to put in place, but they foolishly did this before events on the ground stabilized. The Bush administration had to back-track really fast when the coup fell apart. It's pretty comical how this all transpired--the US government can't seem to get their act together when trying to foment revolution.

This guys is a freaking idiot. It never amazes me how blind these socialistic dictators can be. He says the US is the ""most savage, cruel and murderous empire that has existed in the history of the world." Yet his next statement says "socialism is the only path". The same socialism that Josef Stalin used to murder millions upon millions of people.

The crowd probably had to cheer after he made these statements because there were military personnel with itchy trigger-fingers sitting just out of camera view for any that didn't.

All we would need to do to criple Venezuela is to stop buying oil from them. Oh wait... WE CAN"T!!!

Has anyone else noticed that the countries who we buy oil from seem to really dislike us, but love selling a lot of oil to us?

I was about to say the same thing. Whether you like Chavez or not, it was democracy that brought him into power. It was the U.S. that has flirted with the idea of helping remove him from power through non-democratic means. Socialist does not necessarily mean dictator.

Venezuala has oil, we'll definitely be invading

In Venezuela, that made perfect sense. The country felt that all of the oil revenues were leaving the country because most of the companies were multi-nationals with strong U.S. ties. Chavez ran on a platform that sought to take control of the country's oil so it could be sold abroad with the profits staying in the country. The goal was to actually make money from the process that was occurring anyway.

Spot on. That is why the US is so threatened by Chavez--not because of his anti-American rhetoric, but because of his desire to nationalize the oil industry.

I'm not sure. I believe most of the labor was local, it was just the companies that were stationed abroad. But I'm not sure.

Maybe talk about how the DEA was booted out of Venezuela yesterday, because Venezuela feels they are trying to operate above the law.

The U.S. is once again making claims that Venezuela is promoting groups that will de-stabalize their neighbors. When the U.S. is the one who supported the coup in Hait. When the U.S. is the one backing a false drug war and proping up the government of Columbia. When the U.S. is trying to deny rumors in Paraguay right now about building a major military base. A base that is well timed for te U.S. because Bolivia’s recent uprisings, their enormous gas reserves, and a presidential election on the way, the U.S. will be sitting pretty to fuck with stuff if things don't go our way. Of course the old War on Terrorism arguement could be made, quickly becoming the new tool for fucking with countries in South America, just as Communism was before.

The United States congress wants to set up U.S. run radio and television stations in Venezuela to get our governments message across to the people there. After all, Chavez is fairly loved there and the U.S. needs to spread it's propaganda.

The United States helped fund the recall effort against Chavez.

Venezuela has been asking for a known and wanted terrorist, who blew up a commercial plane years ago, but the U.S. government will not turn him over for Venezuela to put him on trial. Nice, I guess terrorists we like can go unpunished.

The U.S. is constantly speaking out against Venezuela, and behind the scenes trying to do much more. Wonder if it has anything to do with OIL? What a surprise. Probably also personal now, since Chavez has not let the U.S. control what is happening in Venezuela, and Venezuela's neighbors have even chosen their side over the U.S.'s several times which has to piss off the Bush administration.

Another reason why we need to stop using oil as our life line and develop a new type of sustainable energy. Then, we wouldn't rely on these stupid countries for their oil. Without our money, what would they be saying then?

That we don't care about their economy and us not buying oil from them is causing them economic hardships... Or, I should say, our media is reporting that they are saying that.

I need to get to other countries again.. I can't imagine the level of hatred of U.S citizens is any more or less then the level of hatred the average U.S citizens encounters on our own streets for being different.

Also, it is not like we would stop buying oil from these countries if we had another energy source (which most people are talkning about a source to power cars when they say this, they may be including heating oil though).

Go around your house/office and let me know how many things made of plastic you see? Do you use tooth paste? See any thing painted? Nylon and polyester are made from oil, too.

We would keep buying oil, and what we didn't use in cars would be made up for by China and 3rd world nation-states.

While I'm no fan of Chavez, this does burn me. Bush has said countries that harbor terrorists are evil (in so many words). WE are harboring a terrorist! Jesus Christ! Send him down for trial in Venezuela!

This is part of the problem I think at this point. It is really starting to become personal between both administrations. They both came into power at roughly the same time, and have been smacking heads ever since. It won't get any better either.
