terpkristin 08-09-2005 10:34 AM

0. Oh wait, I don't have a job... :(

Wolfpack 08-09-2005 10:34 AM

Three miles. I'm going to hate taking another job after this one because I highly doubt I'll be this close to work ever again.

gottimd 08-09-2005 10:35 AM

7 miles

KevinNU7 08-09-2005 10:35 AM

31 miles one way

Draft Dodger 08-09-2005 10:36 AM

0.7 miles each way

jeff061 08-09-2005 10:36 AM

50 miles one way.

Ugh. Eight months ago it was 2.

JeeberD 08-09-2005 10:37 AM

1.8

digamma 08-09-2005 10:40 AM

12-15 depending on the route I choose.

henry296 08-09-2005 10:40 AM

Used to be about 2.5 miles then we moved in April and it is 20 miles.

Honolulu_Blue 08-09-2005 10:41 AM

3.4 miles each way. Though I walk and take the Metro.

kcchief19 08-09-2005 10:48 AM

30

cartman 08-09-2005 10:48 AM

I drive as far as TK when I'm at home, but then again I have a home office. But most of the time I'm travelling, so it's 1500 miles to Miami, and 2000 to San Jose... :D

Coffee Warlord 08-09-2005 10:49 AM

9 miles each way. Easy commute.

Raiders Army 08-09-2005 10:50 AM

Little over two. I used to drive about 20 miles to work in El Paso.

Farrah Whitworth-Rahn 08-09-2005 10:54 AM

Arlie drives me to work :D

Poli 08-09-2005 10:56 AM

pennywisesb 08-09-2005 11:01 AM

Kodos 08-09-2005 11:02 AM

12 or so.

Radii 08-09-2005 11:03 AM

Heh, you too? It's painful. I got a good sized raise with my new job, but I can't tell the difference.

Cringer 08-09-2005 11:15 AM

When officially do I get to work? I leave, and 4,000-5,800 miles later I give up and come back home.

Klinglerware 08-09-2005 11:20 AM

I used to commute 83 miles each way, which makes the 8 (almost all highway) miles each way at my current gig absolutely glorious.

hukarez 08-09-2005 11:21 AM

I average 32 miles round trip. It's a pity you need a car to really get anywhere in San Diego, unless you take the trolley/bus, etc.

terpkristin 08-09-2005 11:25 AM

Do you people who live less than 5 or 10 miles from work actually DRIVE?
I only hope that when I find a job, it'll be so close to my place (within 15 or 20 miles) so I can bike to work. If I lived less than 5 miles from work, I'd have a tough time justifying starting the car to go to work (unless there was a good reason, such as staying insanely late or giving a presentation or having to go to an offsite meeting from work or something)...

I always wondered why San Diego doesn't try to put in some kind of rail/subway system. Even LA of all places is making an effort.....

I drive. For one thing, I need the truck during the course of the day. But also it's been over 90 for like 50 days in a row and working up a sweat before I get to work is not appealing to me. Less so to my co-workers.

I do.
but, in my defense my wife gets out of work at 5:30 and I work at 6 - we barely have time to say hi and bye and for me to hand off the kids as it is.

plus, my wife would never allow me to walk home at 2am.

Greyroofoo 08-09-2005 11:31 AM

.5 round trip, when the weather isn't so frickin humid I'll walk

terpkristin 08-09-2005 11:33 AM

I understand weather issues. Just asking, in general (and as for the 2 a.m. thing, if I had a job and I knew I was going to be working past 9 p.m., I'd be driving, too)

JonInMiddleGA 08-09-2005 11:34 AM

Zero, ever since we went into business for ourselves.

Prior to that, 62 miles each way.

I try to take public transportation when I can, but it can turn a 15 minute trip into a 60 minute trip. Also, if you are pulling 15 hour days, the last thing you want to do is schlep to the train station after work (if the trains are still running at that time of night...)

McSweeny 08-09-2005 11:37 AM

about 3 miles one way on back roads with almost no traffic. Sometimes i get stuck at the one traffic light and it takes me almost 7 minutes to get to work. On a good day i can make it there in 5. It's great to be able to roll out of bed at 7:30 and still have plenty of time for breakfast and reading the paper and still be at work for 8

terpkristin 08-09-2005 11:40 AM

Oh yeah. I also wanted to say I'm not judging anybody for driving. There are plenty of valid reasons to do it (and public transport in Columbia, MD SUCKS so I sympathize with the "15 minute trip in 75" thing). Just was curious. Maybe I just lust for a job where I can bike commute. :)

I knew a guy who jogged 6 miles to work every day--he was in tremendous shape (he was a coach at the local high school). It's a pretty rare thing--most American towns are so car-dominant and pedestrian-unfriendly, you are likely to get run over if you tried to walk/bike it...

Ryche 08-09-2005 11:45 AM

29.4 miles one way. Bought a house that moved me closer to where I was working, then got a new job that was only 10 miles away from where I had been living. Commute isn't bad, but it's 1.5 hours and a lot of gas wasted every day.

No need for a shower I guess.

VPI97 08-09-2005 12:14 PM

95-100 miles round trip. Go Atlanta!

markprior22 08-09-2005 12:52 PM

Bout 12 steps down to my basement office.

Hawglaw 08-09-2005 12:58 PM

According to Mapquest, 31 miles each way.

Pumpy Tudors 08-09-2005 01:37 PM

0 miles. I don't have a job, either. :(

I hope that I can find a job here in Greensburg or perhaps in the next town over. Unfortunately, I think I might have to work in Pittsburgh, which is 35 miles away. I drove my wife to the Pittsburgh airport the other day, and that's 51 miles away from my house. I was feeling carsick before I even got back home. :(

Fonzie 08-09-2005 01:55 PM

8 miles each way. Much of it is interstate driving, though.

ice4277 08-09-2005 02:01 PM

Generally 30 miles round-trip on a daily basis for me, unless I am covering a game somewhere, then it varies.

Scarecrow 08-09-2005 02:02 PM

According to Google Maps, 16.2 Miles each way

Mustang 08-09-2005 02:03 PM

54 round trip

Wolfpack 08-09-2005 02:04 PM

I also drive the short distance to work and it is mainly because of weather circumstances (half the year it's a bit too cold to walk the three miles, though lately it's also been pretty warm by Michigan standards).

I should add that some point next year, we are scheduled to move back downtown near the campus, so driving a car will be out because of the insane parking permit fees the university charges. Back to the bus system again, which is free for UM employees (we used to be downtown, but space issues bumped us out near I-94 for the last several years).

JW 08-09-2005 02:05 PM

23 for the last 12 years. Now it will be 5.
