OT: Poker--Played with a WSOP Champ tonight

A buddy of mine hosts a quarterly no-limit tournament. He's pretty good friends with a guy named Pat Poels who won a bracelet in this year's WSOP--I think Event #3 or 4, pot limit omaha.

Tonight was his "summer" tournament. We had four tables at his place. I drew the card for the seat immediately to the left of Poels--who incidentally ended up being a very nice guy. The highlight of my night was going in over the top of him on a big pre-flop raise and him folding.

Ultimately, I made the final table, as did Poels. He systematically worked the table. I went out in fourth, with a small profit. Ultimately, he went out in third, after having his 6-5o bluff called by pocket queens. He then lost a race with pocket fives to A-6 to go out.

Fun night with the pseudo-poker celeb mixed in.

Was he wearing his bracelet for intimidation?

He wore the bracelet (but I think largely because the host had asked him to). Early in the tournament when he was in a hand with someone, he would jiggle the bracelet or use it to reflect a glare onto the player. Good stuff.

Pat is playing at the final table of the $1000 SHOE tournament today in Vegas.

He's one of the short stacks, after losing a big pot late last night in Stud. If he can somehow pull through and win the table, it would be his third bracelet--he won a Stud 8 or better bracelet last year as well.

Go Pat go!

I'm actually good friends with Greg Raymer's brother and have hung out with Greg several times, mainly in Vegas. On one occasion, he was back in KC and played in a small buy-in home game with us. He took it just as seriously as a big tourney, but chatted a bit more often than he usually does. Really down-to-earth guy. Very dry and funny sense of humor.
