College off to a bad start

After taking a year off from school for two surgeries, I returned to start classes Monday. Before coming, housing told me that I was on a waiting list for on-campus living. So my friend told me I could stay at his place (off-campus) until I can get housing.

Turns out, the university messed up in its enrollment and student, leaving people with a 70 student waiting list (the school is around 2,600 students). They are kicking returning upperclassmen out of the dorms to give to the new incoming freshmen. Then, I pay $400-some for books, $50 for a permit to park, and I have to dough out another $80 for my culinary arts uniform.

Now, I'm kinda stuck in a bind with housing. I will very unlikely not get a room this semester. My friend told me I could move in for around $370-$400 a month. A good friend, but he's a big boozer and party guy. I drink, but I don't "party" anymore. Been their, done that. Not fun. I like to enjoy a drink, but not drink to get drunk. He wants to turn the basement into a bar/party area for the weekends. It's his place, unless I decide to move in and rent. I'm not completely comfortable with it. Living off-campus, would I be held responsible as a renter for drunk drivers (which he does)? I'm pretty sure they are into the drugs (he isn't, but I know his friends are-they are are smokers also). I'm pretty uncomfortable around drugs, and they stink up the place. Also, I got a feeling (knowing his history, he drinks almost every day-not "drunk", but does drink) he will party here if he can during the week. He's a good guy, just has a typical college party style.

Good news is, that I could move 20 minutes away and stay a ladies' house I know that I met through one of my good friends from home (she works for her, owns a business). Big house, and she doesn't stay their during the week much. Plus, no rent expect food, ect. Money is tight (though I could do the rent, but be tight on my finances). She told me she wouldn't mind at all. Any suggestions? Am I being an overreactive grouch? Or are my concerns legit? I want to do well in school, and continue on where I left off. I'm kinda stressed out already from housing.

Your concearns are legit. Move in with the chick unless you want to spend 40 hours a week in the library just so you can get your work done. And the last thing you want, and I say this out of experience, is to be tight on money when starting the school year. Not only is moving in with the chick better with noise/house population/getting work done, it's cheaper (just clean up after yourself and you'll be golden. Sounds like an ideal situation).

Thanks. She's never at the house (she works endless, and stays downtown at her office apartment during the week). She's a very nice (too nice, maybe) person. I'm a very clean person (I hate people messing up my room, another concern-mix alcohol, idoits, and your place, usually not a good combo).

.....nice that she's never around.........PARTY AT GALAXY'S PLACE!!!

You should see her liquor cabinet, it's basically a regular-size closet stocked with the good stuff. :D

DaddyTorgo 08-31-2005 12:36 AM

i think you've answered your own question here galaxy. move in with the girl rather than your partying buddies.

Thanks...I kinda figure it. My one friend told me "I'll get use to it". It would be nice to keep $400 a month in my pocket too.

BigJohn&TheLions 08-31-2005 01:18 AM

Move in with the dame.

BTW... Since you're a neat-freak, she's probably gonna think you're gay.

BigJohn&TheLions 08-31-2005 01:23 AM

Oh, and don't be a freeloading leech. Buy food and offer to pay the electric bill.

sterlingice 08-31-2005 01:38 AM

Definitely go with the longer commute better place. Especially with the low cost of living. Going to need to save up those pennies in college

Thanks for the compliment. Drunk when you type this?

I'm not a "neat-freak", just not messy. I don't leave my crap all over the place.

Thanks. I will buy my own food of course. Remember college and money? It's not as easy as it sounds. I'm just pissed at the university for the way it is handling housing.

Gotcha. Misread your statement (was thinking it was the typical FOFC humor :) ).

Nice thing living in my region, is that it is very cheap living compare to the rest of the nation.

So is Lawrence, KS. I paid (still pay) $230 per month for my apartment, half the rent at a two bedroom. Cable paid for, too. That said, college is expensive as hell, tho, even with some financial aid, most of which these days is loans the way they keep cutting financial aid in the government.

Yeap. And housing has people in study lounges, triple to double dorm rooms, ect. A lot of other schools put students up in hotels if they overbook.

Farrah Whitworth-Rahn 08-31-2005 01:44 PM

Heck Galaxy, if you'd be willing to cook for us you're welcome to move in with us.

Though that commute might be a little too rough for you. :p

I won't find out until Monday before I can get a hold of my friend. She's in South Carolina until Monday, which isn't bad. So I sort things out by the middle of next week. I may go home this weekend (I have to next weekend, go to Boston on the 12th). I'll will offer to pay the electric (which shouldn't be too bad, considering I'll be gone most of the day, and likely home most weekends), as well my own food (which I would do anyways).

Update:
I just got back from Boston, and found out next semester I will have to drop out for medical reasons for at least that semester. Secondly, my friend didn't pull through for me about staying at her boss' house. Thirdly, I will not get on campus this semester.

I was gonna move in here (after talking to my friend about rules-no weekday parties (I usually head home on the weekends, ect) for $365 a month through December (and I will only have to pay half of that in December) after checking apartments start at $500-550 alone just for rent (that $365 here includes the electric, gas, cable, water along with the rent), and no one I know of getting a roommate, I may be out of options. Also, I don't know many landlords that would lease month-by-month (they usually want at least an one-year commiment).

So, I come home from my class about a hour ago, and the dipshit has a few people (sounds like around 8, didn't meet them, nor care to) partying, drinking, blasting music. Plus, I'm not too crazy on cigratte smoke in the house. Any suggestions? I'm really ticked at my college for handling the housing situation they are (kicking returning people out for incoming freshmen, making people live off-campus, ect). Worst part is I got quite of bit of reading to do, and may have to drive to campus to do it.

That sucks Galaxy. As of right now, there doesn't seem to be anything you can do really. Just going to have to rough it.

Yeah...He told me don't be gay, (of course he is drunk right now). I used to be in the party thing, but I've only one beer since being here (its week three), and have no interest anymore (took last year off from college). Prolly just becoming an old fart. I wouldn't care if he had one or two people over and had a few drinks. But they are loud as frick and lot more people then two. I couldn't even pull into the driveway.

Flasch186 09-13-2005 08:02 PM

tell him you came home to chew gum and kick ass and youre all out of gum. Then go fucking nuts!!!

ThunderingHERD 09-13-2005 08:17 PM

Don't be gay.

sterlingice 09-13-2005 08:48 PM

I swear- this was the worst thing about having someone who liked to get drunk as a roommate. There was just no reasoning with him during those times so you basically have to treat them like a kid- yell at them or something else stupid to get them to do anything. And then it screws up the whole dynamic during the rest of the time because they're expecting you to go to those things to make them do anything when you were only doing it because they were drunk.

Galaxy 09-13-2005 10:07 PM

Good news is my friend called me tonight and said I could sleep on the pull-out couch for around $200 a month (it will only be for three months until the end of the semester). Alittle crowded, with her, another guy and another girl, but no one is home during the day (neither will I), and they pretty much come home study, then go to bed. Only downside is it's about 30-minutes away. He didn't understand why I wanted to study (on a Tuesday night).

I would, but I am a skinny, 5'4" kid, and he's a much larger Army guy.

DaddyTorgo 09-13-2005 10:10 PM

Galaxy, where are you going to school? somewhere near Boston?

Crapshoot 09-13-2005 10:34 PM

no way he's near boston if he's paying 400... :D

Galaxy, thought about craigslisting it if that's an option ? Worked for me before..

I say kill him in his sleep and drop the body in the dumpster. Problem solved.

aha. what's your budget if you don't mind my asking ? craiglist generally works in the 600+ range IMO - but I suppose you could find cheaper.

Galaxy 09-13-2005 10:54 PM

Nah, I'm up by Niagara Falls...But I do travel to Boston for my medical treatment.

My roomie is passed out on the floor sitting up, with his head on his on arm on the side of the bed.

my budget is prolly right around that 600 range. But cheaper is always better so i can keep $$ in the bank. I think I may actually have a lead on a friend of a friend who needs a roommate, it's much cheaper to get multiple guys together. Spacious two-bedrooms go for like 1200, studios for like 800.
