Eve online
Has anyone tried this space MMORPG? It seems like an interesting game. I really enjoyed the game freelancer, and this looks somewhat simliar to it.
|
Played this for a year but quit due to lack of free time. :( I'd play it again if I had enough time to devote to it.
Fun game, early part of the game can be boring because mining takes forever. Once you have money and join a corp. the game gets pretty interesting. The developers add new story elements frequently. One nice thing about it is you gain skill/attributes even if you are offline. Ship combat is solid and the graphics are awesome. |
I have tried to play this a couple of times (including the beta). It seems like for every step forward they take in one area, they take two back in other areas.
It is a fun game if you love games like Privateer, Freelancer, etc. But it also has all of the usual MMORPG aspects (travel to and from places can take awhile, etc. etc.). The last time I tried to get into it, several months ago, the game part was better. There were more minerals to mine, more things to build, etc. But, the bugs in the interface made it horrible to play. I was recently thinking of trying to get back into it. I really want to play and love this game. I think I could...they just have to a better job of keeping bugs out of the interface and graphics. |

What im wondering, is if there are any comparable space MMORPG games out there?

It's a fun game. It's mostly more of a MMO business game with pirates and bountyr hunters. If you are looking for action, you can make a character centered around combat and go shoot up NPC pirates (it'll take awhile before you can take on the PC pirates). The game is PvP. Each system has a security level. 0.5 and higher means you're basically safe from PCs, but the 0.5-0.7 systems have NPC pirates). If a player attacks you in the >= 0.5 systems, CONCORD (the cops) will not be happy and the PC will be attacked by the cops. In the 0.4 systems and lower systems, you are on your own. It can be a very boring game at times though. I suggest trying to get into a good corp. One of the times I played (about a year and half ago), I was in a corp where all of the players role-played. So when I was on long trips (sometimes traveling takes awhile), I could have in-character conversations with my corp mates. Although I really have no idea how many good, rp corps there are. I wouldn't count on there being many. EDIT: I remember when that story "The Great Scam" was originally posted on somethingawful.com. It was a very entertaining read. EDIT #2: Seems to be Alt-Tabbing out of the game fine now. |
great read sachmo, I wonder if that is not the best scam I have ever read in an online world. :D
|
Here's another great story about an amazing PvP coup/heist pulled off in Eve Online.
"Through a months-long ruse, one player corporation infiltrated another top to bottom, assassinated its CEO (who had a bounty on her head) and made off with about (30 billion in game money) $16,500 worth of virtual goods." Incredible. |
How much does the game cost a month sachmo? I read that you can buy 30 days for 19.95 if you download the game online, but I didnt see a monthly price anywhere
|
I signed up for a 14 day trial and ended up buying the full subscription last night. I love the game. It does have some boring aspects, but then again I've heard of people who are bored to tears by the idea of a text sim.
One thing in the game is that it's no fun to go at it alone. Once you've found a few people to play with or joined a corp it's a load more fun. I've been playing about a week and already I have over 1 million isk, mostly from mining and running missions. I don't do pvp, and I rarely engage in combat of any kind. I like to run away! :D I love how huge the game is, and the fact that you can do almost anything you want. |

$19.95 for the first month, $14.95 thereafter. |

I just got around to reading this. That one is better than the Great Scam. I understand people get angry when their "work" is taken like that, but every one knows what kind of game Eve Online is. If you don't want to risk the chance of something like that happening, don't play. |
There's a 14 day trial available from GamersHell just now, still seems to be active. I put in my email and got my activation code, downloading the client as we speak.

Airhog, I've never played, so I don't really know. Sorry. :)
Not sure if I'm ever going to pay for a sub game again. Not enough time to make it worth paying for the game over and over and over. |
Man, I must have been drunk when I posted that one wrong person totally :D
|
thanks sachmo - great read

Free trial is still good, I've been messing about with the game all night. Kind of like Earth and Beyond, but with a far larger universe. Seems pretty promising so far.
|
Any suggestions on what type of character I should make? I'm totally new to this.
|
I'm downloading the client as i type this.
Let's all share our in-game names so we can learn the game together and help each other out if need be... I'm going to be named either Vyr or Arenar. |
Woo, finally got this badboy downloaded and installed.
|
Man, this tutorial is loooong. This game seems very in depth. I'm gonna have to try to finish the tutorial tommorow.
|
Well, Ive broke down and got myself the 14 day trial. Lets see how this goes, probably won't buy it after the 14 days is up, but it will probably be entertaining for a few days at least..
|
Well, i've played for a few hours and gotten through most of the tutorial. I couldn't seem to get to where the tutorial wanted me to go (Deadspace Training Facility after a jump using the accelerator?) so i ended up cancelling it and fighting some pirates and doing some mining before heading back to dock and sell some stuff. The game is very interesting, though i can imagine it'll take a lot of time to get to use the better ships. I had absolutely no idea what i was going to do in the beginning, so I think i picked the absolutely wrong type of character, but we'll see.
My character's name is Vyr Elus. Send me a pm in game and perhaps we can help each other learn stuff... this game is really complicated and different as far as MMORPGs go. |
I had the same problem but once the pirates were killed, the accelerator started working, the tutorial just seems to be badly worded. Or I only half read it. One or the other.
You didn't miss much from there on, it was basically killing a few pirates then looting their cargo, then a mining tutorial. Mining seems pretty dull. My guy has suddenly become very wealth, finished a run of about 9 courier missions and got a memory implant as a reward. Since I couldn't use the implant, I sold it and got 2.5mil ISK. Which seems a lot when a mining run only nets about 4k. I've gone for the Amarr Empire, they're the nasty ones. Seems fairly fun, if repetative, so far. |
Seriously, if you can make it past the mining in the early parts of the game and get into a decent corp. you will enjoy it. The hard part is the early going! I assume they still have a decent player run economy right?
You guys are making me want to load it back up and play damn you! :) edit: The Gallente Imicus is probably your best bet once you make it past newb stage and plan to buy your first ship. Bastards, I re-activated my account. |
Also, a little tip. Always be training a skill. Remember that you continue to train even when offline so even on days when you don't plan on playing, log in, check your training, train a new skill level in something. If it takes 2 1/2 hours, log back in 2 1/2 hours later, set new training, etc. Takes only a minute or so.

Ok back in business as a member of the Amarr Empire. Name is Skelv Hyden. Someone needs to create an FOFC channel in game so we can chat.
|
My name is Sab Khan, a member of the Caldari.
EDIT: If you PM me and I don't respond, I'm probably taking a long trip to retrieve something. When I go on multi-jump trips, I'm usually AFK. (I always stay in safe systems when doign this, obviously) |
Ok FOFC channel set up. Password is football.
|
Okay, so I couldn't make it all the way thru the tutorial (I went thru one of the accelerator gates, and whatever event was supposed to trigger, didn't). Anyways, what did I miss in the rest of the tutorial? I think I may have missed something major, because right now all I can do is go back and forth mining (making about 6000 ISK each trip). At this pace, I will never have a new ship. Oh, I don't qualify for any of the missions, so that is why I think I missed something major.
|
You can go into the settings and reset the tutorial missions. It's important because you get your first contact with an agent that will give you jobs.
|
If anyone is having a hard time getting a 14-day trial code let me know. I can send you one via the "buddy" program. Just send a pm with your email address.
This is a no-hassle access pass which means you will NOT have to enter any credit card information to start playing. The only thing you need is to download the game and use the access key you will receive. |
