New Orleans Relief - Countries that Shouldn't Be Disparaged
Qatar Offers $100m to Relief Fund
A hell of a lot more than my $25, anyway. Here's the other countries that have offered aid, and bless them. Australia, Austria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Belgium, Canada, China, Columbia, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Germany, Guatemala, Greece, Guyana, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Philippines, Portugal, South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela. |
dola...
Although, as of Friday, the White House had not taken any other countries up on their offers. |
doladola...
Heck, even Cuba is offering 1,100 doctors. A hell of a gesture (which is what, at the end, it is). |
dolatres...
Except for Saudi Arabia. Quote: "SAUDI ARABIA - Saudi Refining, a Houston-based subsidiary of state oil firm Saudi Aramco, will donate $5 million to the American Red Cross to support relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Katrina." A Houston-based subsidiary? And with Bandar Bush still kicking? Eff 'em, and let 'em know we noticed their slight, the effers. |
dolaquatro...
Although it probably says something that after all the years of our Middle East adventure, there's only one country--and really, only a U.S.-based subsidiary--that is making even a token gesture of helping out. Tell me what that means. |
They're nice gestures - and they should be truly appreciated - but it's not as if it's a lack of resources that's slowed the response here.

Israel isn't in the middle east? What about the United Arab Emirates? About the only shocking omission is Kuwait. The rest come as no surprise. |
I'm going off the CNN breakdown, and dola-ing as I notice things. Evidently the other Middle Eastern countries haven't offered specific aid.

I wish to thank all 5 people from Luxembourg. |
Don't forget Poland!
Er...uh, evidently they forgot about us. Nevermind. |
$100 million? Dang, makes Japan's $200,000 now and $300,000 a little later to the Red Cross seem like Monopoly money.
Although what doesn't get said too much, is that several of those countries offered to send troops to help out. Uhm, I can understand why those would be rejected. |

Don't forget Jordan |
BTW, remember how some folks were bashing Condoleeza Rice for doing photo ops at the US Open and all that while this was going on, and others said "It's not like she's involved with the relief/clean up.."?
Heard on the way in that she is in CHARGE of the relief efforts as it purtains to other country's contributions (she is down there now) |
Thread title was screwed up,
POL: New Orleans Relief - Countries that Shouldn't Be Disparaged Fixed it. |
Little liners scrolling on news channel says Kuwait has offered/whatever $500 million. Have not seen any confirmation story (it was DirecTV channel 204, btw).
