My Name is Earl - The Office

I had moments of uncontrolled laugher tonight watching these two shows. I think I'm going to like Tuesdays on NBC!

HomerJSimpson 09-20-2005 09:43 PM

The Office was great, but I haven't watched Earl yet.

Solecismic 09-20-2005 09:46 PM

Earl was better than I thought it would be. The Office was marred by far too many commercials, but I like the original so much I can't stop watching.

When Dwight played the "Oh Yeah.." clip, I literally lost control of my body and almost spilled my diet dr pepper on the couch I was laughing so hard.

sabotai 09-20-2005 09:57 PM

I need TiVO or something....I can't miss House but I did want to see these two shows.

FBPro 09-20-2005 10:08 PM

Wow, almost missed these thank God for NBCWest on Directv.

Swaggs 09-20-2005 10:27 PM

First time I have seen The Office and I enjoyed it. It was a little hit or miss on some jokes, but overall pretty good.

MikeVic 09-20-2005 10:34 PM

I loved My Name is Earl.

RPI-Fan 09-20-2005 10:57 PM

"Oh, you're just in time for Ping."

Earl will be replayed on Bravo Sunday, September 25 at 12:00am edt. (I had to check since my Cox DVR didn't record it)

Yeah, me too. The Office especially today - I was nearly crying from laughing. :D

Crapshoot 09-20-2005 11:16 PM

When Kevin finally wins that award... gold. :D

VPI97 09-20-2005 11:32 PM

Earl was great - I loved it when his brother called dibs on that guy's wife.

AgustusM 09-21-2005 12:45 AM

Earl was funny as hell, didn't watch office.

My wife and I kept commenting - I can't believe they are allowing this on network TV. seemd more like an HBO kind of show.

TazFTW 09-21-2005 02:12 AM

Whoa, didn't know Ethan Suplee was going to be in My Name is Earl. With him and Jason Lee it was like watching Mallrats the sitcom (which reminds me that I need to buy the Mallrats 10th Anniversary DVD).

I also liked The Office.

ThunderingHERD 09-21-2005 02:16 AM

Didn't get to watch tonight--had to work. But I agree with Solecismic--I can't stop watching The Office, just because I loved the original show so much. Which is not to disparage the American version (it did become one of the best comedies on TV).

"There's been a rape!"

RebelMan 09-21-2005 02:23 AM

Heh, LMAO at the "Dibs" part on 'Earl'.

'My Name is Earl' was real good. So was the Law and Order: SVU episode. Only caught the last few moments of 'Office'.

Raiders Army 09-21-2005 05:46 AM

Earl was good. I was pleasantly surprised because I was afraid that all of the previews would ruin the show's jokes. Very good for a pilot episode.

BTW, I like Jason Lee in the View Askew universe as well...and is it just me but is his ex-wife the white trash in just about every movie?

TazFTW 09-21-2005 06:27 AM

Jaime Pressly. Yep, pretty much every movie.

Ethan Suplee is his brother Randy, right? I keep seeing him as the big o-line in 'Remember the Titans'

" Coach, I'm eligible "
" That's good son, but I'm married "

I like Earl, thought it was pretty funny and kind of different from the usual sitcoms...

TazFTW 09-21-2005 07:10 AM

Yup, that's Ethan Suplee.

Yeah, that was the best part. Either that or the "Bushiest Beaver" award.

chinaski 09-21-2005 10:11 AM

"Why dont you share those vicodin and we'll talk about it"

CamEdwards 09-21-2005 11:17 AM

damn. forgot to record "The Office".

Have to say I was not impressed with My Name is Earl, and I'm a huge Kevin Smith/Jason Lee fan. I can't really put my finger on why I didn't like it, but it seemed too absurd for me.

cody8200 09-21-2005 11:40 AM

I was really really looking forward to this 2nd season of the office. I bought the first season's dvd. As expected I loved last nights episode.

I watched the earl thing. Fairly decent. I'll probably watch next week too. Loved the 'dibs' line on that guys wife.

KevinNU7 09-21-2005 12:18 PM

I thought Earl was going to be crap and wasn't going to even watch it but nothing else interested me so I put it on. It was excellent for a pilot. Definetly had some laugh out loud moments.

The Office was probably the best episode of the show I have seen so far. I was pretty disappointed with Season 1 but in this episode they seemed to make Steve Carell's character a move believable boss (wasn't as over the top with his jokes) show I enjoyed it alot.

TazFTW 09-21-2005 03:46 PM

Earl got some pretty good numbers.

'Earl' Is a Pearl for NBC

The series debut of My Name Is Earl on NBC Tuesday night won its time period with a 9.3 rating and a 14 share, helping the struggling network win the night. The show had been receiving massive critical praise. (The pilot reportedly tested stronger with focus groups than any NBC show had in 15 years.) On Tuesday, the Detroit Free Press described it as "a gen-u-wine, fresh-squeezed screwball pearl." And Kay McFadden in the Seattle Times commented, "If any show can single-handedly turn around NBC this fall, it's My Name Is Earl

sachmo71 09-21-2005 03:48 PM

it beats the pants off of Kitchen Confidential, that's for sure.

Eh, I liked it, too. Earl was better, though (just watched it).

Scarecrow 09-21-2005 05:27 PM

I thought Kitchen Confidential was a riot. I'll probably record it and watch Earl in the future.

panerd 09-21-2005 06:01 PM

I like how stuff that happens earlier in the show plays a part later without a whole lot of explanation. Like when he gets the remote control security system for that shitty truck and then after Jamie Pressley kicks it he uses the remote to turn it off. I don't know why, but jokes like that leave me rolling.

I like that kind of joke too. I also like how, as far as we know, he still has the 100K in his glovebox. :D

ThunderingHERD 09-21-2005 08:38 PM

Earl was alright. Very well made. I don't much care for Jason Lee though, and his accent seems to keep falling in and out. Jamie Pressly is always nails on a chalkboard to me. The presence of the maid is inexplicable. Ethan Suplee was good, though.

Probably the best episode of The Office yet. Finally tapping in to some of the pathos that made the UK version so great. They really need to tone the Dwight character down, though--the absurdity of that character just undermines the realism of the rest of the show.

Crapshoot 09-21-2005 08:58 PM

Actually, what I liked about The Office was that they showed that despited everything, those guys like their boss- when he wanted to cancel the Dundees, they started clapping and trying to get him to start them up again. And yeah, its a must record for me now.

TazFTW 09-28-2005 10:47 PM

This week's Earl wasn't as funny as the pilot but it still got some laughs. I liked Crabman in this ep. The actor who played Donnie Jones has been in quite a few series. He was Eli in the first season of 24, he was the crazy inmate in Prison Break and now he was the crazy guy in Earl.

I thought The Office was funnier than last weeks.

Ratings for both shows dropped though as lots of people tuned in to Commander in Chief.

Swaggs 09-28-2005 11:40 PM

I liked The Office a lot this week. It kills me when they pan in on peoples' faces during awkward moments. Earl was pretty subpar for me. They need to use the brother a lot more and the ex-wife storyline a lot less.

Coulda sworn he was in an eposide of "Dead Like Me" too.

WrongWay 10-04-2005 09:42 PM

Really enjoyed Earl tonight, again. Best new series I have seen in a long time.

I stuck around for 15 minutes of the office and totally hated it. I don't understand the camera angle. Reminds me of watching home movies with little kids acting and always starring directly at the camera. I understand when the actor are taken out of the show and talk directly to the camera, but why do people keep starring at the camera when they are doing a normal shot? Why do they keep looking at the camera?

So, the office will be a pass for me as this drove me nuts.

Mocumentary. They are supposed to know that the camera is there. Hence the reason the boss is always adding the extra over-the-topness.

I don't think that's an actual word, but hopefully you understand what I'm trying to say. The camera being in the room is part of the joke.

TwinCitiesFan 10-04-2005 10:41 PM

I have been watching these two shows for the past three weeks, this is the best hour on television.

FBPro 10-04-2005 10:52 PM

Missed the early showing of Earl but about to catch the west coast showing on Directv.

ThunderingHERD 10-04-2005 11:09 PM

Just watched the 2nd episode of the Office this season. Pretty good, but once again the American Gareth character undermined the reality of the episode. Also, bad casting with the American Finchy--the guy looks like more of a loser than his lackey.

jbmagic 10-04-2005 11:30 PM

another funny show is "How i Met your Mom"

very funny comedy this year too.

Raiders Army 10-05-2005 05:59 AM

My Name is Earl had some funny moments in it last night, but the pilot episode was much better. I'll stick around for the whole season probably.

The Office isn't funny to me.

I'm digging this show. It has charm. I'm in for the season.

ISiddiqui 10-05-2005 08:18 AM

I have "Earl" taped and I'll watch it tonight probably, but I did see "Office". Man, the American version just keeps getting better :D. I died with uncontrolled laughter at the 'closing ceremonies':

"Why are we playing the national anthem"
"Because your condo is in America"
"Oh"

LOL!

I watched the pilot for this show and didn't think it was funny at all. Did it get better in subsequent episodes?

i've heard that Neil Patrick Harris is the bright spot. I stopped watching it after the first show, though. It didn't hook me.

ISiddiqui 10-05-2005 09:00 AM

Neil Patrick Harris is the man! I loved the pilot myself. The second show was a bit less in quality, but the last one (3rd show) returned to the greatness of the pilot!

SUIT UP!

HomerJSimpson 10-05-2005 09:58 AM

I was ripped on "Earl". I taped it on my DVR in HD, and for some reason the dialouge track was turned off for the first 20 minutes of the show. You could hear the "background" sounds and music just fine, but you couldn't here the dialouge. So, I guess I missed this one.
