Wow. 21 inch screens are big

I just purchased a used 21 inch monitor (the old one finally bit the dust). All I can say is that this sucker is huge! I think I might have went too big.

No. Never. For reference I have a 20.1 LCD and a 19" CRT.

I have the computer hooked to my front projector...106" screen.

How do you even see the text at 21"? ;)

But I imagine you are sitting further than 6 inches from that screen. If not, you need glasses.

I am looking to get a new 20" LCD monitor. However, I can not find any good deals right now.

HomerJSimpson 09-29-2005 08:46 PM

BTW, what resolution do you use with a screen this size? I'm trying 1280X960 right now, but should I try higher?

I'm using 1600x1200 on my new 20" LCD monitor and it looks great.

just an fyi... the Xbox 360 will have a VGA adapter to hook up to your computer monitor so you can play your games in high-def without having to splurge on an expensive HDTV.

jeff061 09-30-2005 06:25 AM

1600x1200 on my 21".

It's hell on my eyes but you get a ton of real estate.

HomerJSimpson 09-30-2005 08:35 AM

Well, I've found I'm most comfortable at 1280x1024 right now, with an 85 mghz refresh rate. Watching video on this is awesome! I can't even imagine how much better a 20" LCD would have been. Of course that would have been several hundred dollars versus the 80 bucks I picked this up for.

Daimyo 09-30-2005 09:32 AM

I use 1920x1440 on my 19" CRT at home, but I use large font sizes to compensate for the otherwise too small text and I spent probably close to 2 years on 1600x1200 before making the jump up. For me anything lower than 1600x1200 is just too annoying (1280x1024 is fine with dual displays)... I like/need to have multiple apps open side-by-side!

I think for a 20" display, 1600x1200 would be optimal and about equivalent to running 1280x1024 on a 17" LCD which I believe is the standard.

You wouldn't believe how often the ladies say this to me.

That's right, buddy.

NEVER.

Icy 09-30-2005 09:36 AM

I use 1280x1024 in my new 19" TFT screen. I was using a 17" TFT before with same resolution, but i can't go further than that for the 12 hours per day i expend in my computer.

cuervo72 09-30-2005 09:37 AM

Using 1280x960 here at work (20" flat panel). Could probably make things smaller, but the change gives me a headache for a while before I get used to it, so I haven't...

Marc Vaughan 09-30-2005 09:48 AM

You can never have TOO big for a monitor imho ...

Back when I worked on Flight Sims I used to have a 40'' monitor that was fantastic - had some great doom and duke3D sessions on it (yeah it was quite a while back now ... still miss it though ;) ).

Marc Vaughan 09-30-2005 09:50 AM

(in case you're wondering the huge monitor was made by a division of the company (TTSL) who I was working with back then - no idea whether they ever were commercially available ...)

Trust me, in a few weeks you'll wish you bought a bigger monitor. I bought two Dell 2001FP 21" LCDs earlier this summer and now I'm jonesing for the Apple 30".

cuervo72 09-30-2005 09:57 AM

Oh, they used to have really large monitors on some of the unix workstations at Hopkins. Of course, they were black and white (these things were pretty old when I got there, and not really used much...we used them because they were in a smaller, seldom used computer lab along with the old Mac's, and they wouldn't kick us out for mudding). The Silicon Graphics machines had some big purple monitors though too, which were thankfully in color.

MacroGuru 09-30-2005 09:59 AM

At home, my 19 inch LCD is perfect, I though at first it was a little big...but I am looking to purchase a second one so I can run dual.
