ESPN Poll: White Sox vs. Red Sox screwup

Cut and paste from the ESPN Sportsnation Poll:

"The White Sox, who hope to reach their first World Series in franchise history, must first get past the Red Sox, a team that ended an 86-year World Series drought just one year ago, in the first round of the playoffs. They'll have home-field advantage to help them in their quest."

I get more and more amazed at ESPN everyday. Their fact checker obviously doesn't have a clue. The White Sox have been to the World Series four times (1906, 1917, 1919, 1959), last winning in 1917. Don't they even have an inkling of the "Black Sox" scandal?

I'm dumbfounded.

Hehe, nice. They probably think the Black Sox are a different team.

Not to argue the facts, but do you really think their web polls have a fact checker? They're probably entered on a whim by some low-paid web monkey.

I was watching the Bengals/Texans game on Sunday and I'm pretty sure that I heard a CBS announcer say that the Bengals had history on their side since they last went to the Super Bowl in a year after the Eagles lost it. Well, the last time except for 1989 - only one of the most memorable Super Bowls ever.

I think an organization like ESPN passes EVERYTHING through some sort of QC (although obviously not the most stringent). While the low paid monkey probably develops the poll, I doubt the same people write and publish the web content.

Depends what you call QC. Most organizations (even the big name ones) have much smaller web teams than you'd imagine. There may be some sort of workflow process where one person enters content and another approves for publish, but a fact-checker who OK's every word on the site? No way.

I have to agree with this. It may not be as thorough as other areas, but I think someone would pick it up.

Are these the same monkeys that Homer had on the Simpsons?

They did. I was trying to remember the Eagles going to a SB in the mid-80's, but it wasn't happenin'.

Dola--I'm just glad the original version of the poll didn't make it onto the Web:

"The White Sox, who apparently are a professional baseball franchise that has been in operation since 1901 (I know, it caught us completely by surprise, too), must first get past the Red Sox..."
