Making a folder undeletable?

The main computer in my house, running XP, holds all my music & other media files and I'm trying to find a way to set the folder(s) up so that the other people in my house can't delete the files...

I want the media files avabile for use for the other XP users... but I don't want them able to delete them.

Anyone have any advice?

Make 'em read-only.

Rt Click -> Properties -> Read-Only

Shouldn't making them Read Only prevent them from being deleted?

why would other people in your house delete your music...

A little bad blood.... :p

I'd imagine that tends to happen when your playlist is populated by Hanson and Justin Timberlake. :D

Don't hurt me!

Made the "My Music" folder read-only... but I can still delete the files within.

You need to make the individual files read-only too, I think. All making the folder read-only does is make sure they can't nuke everything at once by deleting the folder.

When you make a folder read-only it asks you if you want to apply it to all subfolders and files... I said yes, then double checked the files properties... tried deleting it and a dialog box came up asking:

Are you sure you want to move this read-only file to the recycle bin?

I said yes, and cleared the bin... and now that test files is gone forever.

Hmm. Maybe "Read-Only" applies to editing, and "Archive" applies to deletion.

Right click on the folder - Properties - Security Tab - Change settings for Full Control, Modify, and Write to "Deny."

I'm right-clinking on both the folder & files and I'm not seeing a security tab in the properties menu... all I have is general, sharing, and custimize.

If you're not using the root login, you probably don't have access to that. Make sure you're logged in as Administrator or Owner.

Nope... I'm logged on as an Admin.

Windows Firewall turned on? If it's not, try turning it on and seeing if that causes the Security tab to pop up.

Go to Tools - Folder Options - View and uncheck Simple file sharing at the bottom.

Security tab should be there now.

Read only should work as well, not sure why it's not.
Edit: Now that I think about I guess read only doesn't work. Silly Windows.
