Tim Rattay to Buccs

LOL

Dola,

TAMPA, Fla. -- Tim Rattay was acquired Tuesday by Tampa Bay as the Buccaneers addressed their shortage at quarterback after Brian Griese injured his knee.

The Bucs sent an undisclosed draft choice to the San Francisco 49ers for the six-year veteran, who lost his job in San Francisco after four weeks to top overall draft pick Alex Smith. The transaction beat the NFL trading deadline of 4 p.m. Tuesday.

To make room for Rattay on the active roster, the Bucs released rookie fullback Rick Razzano.

Griese tore knee ligaments in Sunday's victory over Miami and will be out for a lengthy time. Chris Simms took over for Griese as the Buccaneers beat the Dolphins 27-13.

Rattay, a seventh-round pick in 2000, started nine games last season and beat out Smith in training camp this season. But he performed poorly after an opening victory over St. Louis and was benched by coach Mike Nolan.

Rattay has played in 32 games with 16 starts. He has completed 356 of 586 passes (60.8 percent) for 3,941 yards, 24 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He has a career passer rating of 81.6.

At Louisiana Tech, Rattay started 33 games, finishing second in NCAA history with 12,746 yards passing. He was the third player in NCAA history with more than 100 career touchdown passes.

Tampa Bay's other quarterback, Luke McCown, was also a standout at Louisiana Tech.

Damn I had Rick Razzano in my fantasy league!

Emiliano 10-18-2005 05:16 PM

Good move. Also, with all the injuries on defense, it opens up a roster spot. Oh well, they won't sign a phenom, but it's better to have 4 QBs...

Vince 10-18-2005 05:43 PM

I wonder what kind of draft pick they gave up? 3rd?

Mr. Sparkle 10-18-2005 05:55 PM

I'm pretty sure it was a 7th rounder.

MacroGuru 10-18-2005 05:57 PM

So wait....the niners have Smith and ?????? at QB

CHEMICAL SOLDIER 10-18-2005 06:04 PM

Dont they also have a kid named Steve Spurrier as back up?

korme 10-18-2005 06:30 PM

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Rick Razzano, hailing from Milford High School, got released. Damn. :(

KEN DORSEY

Vince 10-18-2005 06:38 PM

And Cody Pickett.

Passacaglia 10-18-2005 06:57 PM

I bet Rattay leads the Bucs to the Super Bowl, and Chris Simms takes over next year anyway.

cincyreds 10-18-2005 09:34 PM

better go pick him off the waiver wire......NOT!

Those numbers surprised me a great deal. Not too shabby, really, considering the overall talent level of the team.

If you can find a breakdown of his stats you should look at his numbers from the 1st-3rd quarter and compare them to the 4th. Very scary.

Axxon 10-18-2005 11:51 PM

I hate the move myself but I think there's a tiny bit more to it. His numbers aren't that bad, he plays in the west coast offense and he happens to play for our next opponent.

The guy is only going to be a backup anyway. Sucks about Razzano but maybe we can still practice squad him.

I agree.

I'm assuming he means good in the first 3 quarters and putrid in the 4th. In that case, he's just a low rent Brian Griese because that fits him to a T.

Let me see if I can find them.

kingfc22 10-19-2005 12:01 AM

I know 11 of his 18 picks came in the 4th. Trying to find QB rating.

Can you find the Griese numbers too? They may not be that bad but the guy gets worse as the game goes on.

Yep, just like I thought.

82/54 td/int in the first three quarters
21/24 in the fourth.

We got basically a similar guy.

Axxon 10-19-2005 12:21 AM

Dola

Thanks for that btw. :)

I would take Rattay or Griese (even with one knee) over Joey Harrington any day. Hell. I'll take Ray Lucas, Jeff Blake, Gus Frerotte, Eric Hipple, Giovanni Carmazzi, Ryan Leaf, Jeff George, Akili Smith, David Kilingler, Tim Couch, Kordell Stewart, Chad Henne...

You had me until you mentioned Eric Hipple. No quarterback was that bad...ever.

His own coach once remarked "Eric throws the most beautiful 50 yard bombs you've ever seen. Trouble is, the receivers are only 20 yards downfield."

His own coach.

I think he's possibly the worst QB ever but as far as football goes, oddly enough, I think of Mr Hipple quite fondly. :D

Darkiller 10-19-2005 03:48 AM

I think it's a good fit for Tim Rattay.
He goes to a team which is a playoff contender, with a lot more talent than the 49ers have at this time, and he could basically be the guy for the reminder of the season and maybe take the Bucs deep in the Playoffs.
If that happens, I bet he'd have a great chance of establishing himself here since he is only 28 years old and his only competition is Brian Griese and Cris Simms (not exactly Steve Young & Joe Montana).

The Bucs sent what was believed to be a sixth-round draft choice to the 49ers for Rattay

That's cheap but Nolan hinted that the deal could get "sweeter" depending on how Rattay fares.

Don't forget about ARNAZ BATTLE. I think he should be the QB.

Yep - and what's more is the defense knows you're going to be throwing. Thus, I'm not surprised that his numbers for the 4th quarter are lower. In fact, I'd expect it given the sorry state of the 49ers.

Note that he also played more games in the fourth quarter, so he was coming in for an ineffective QB and probably STARTING down.

What are his quarter-by-quarter stats when he actually starts the game?

I guess that would be a little bit of an overestimate on my part. Hard to argue the value for the Bucs here -- a 6th round pick isn't all that much, and Rattay could be a servicable backup/temp starter.

kcchief19 10-19-2005 05:00 PM

Between Rattay, Griese, Simms and -- ugh -- McCown, has there ever been a larger collection of hobo QBs on one team than this? Even when the Chargers had Ryan Leaf they had Jim Harbaugh around to balance things out.

Plus, everyone QB is either an NFL legacy or a Lousiana Techster. If Warren Moon has an illegitimate child go to Louisiana Tech, Tampa Bay may their QB of the future.

21C 10-19-2005 06:47 PM

If he's that bad in the 4th quarter then let him play just the first 3 quarters and put someone else in for the last Q.
