Wireless Network Help
 
I am at my parents house this weekend trying to set-up a wireless network. The router utility is not automatically finding my Internet connection. I go in an manually put it in as DHCP. I leave the host name and domain name blank. I then try to set it up and no dice. I have turned all the devices off and restarted.

My ISP told me they would not help with routers. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what can be going wrong? I am pretty savvy with this stuff, but I have no clue what to do next.

Edit - This WordPerfect crap on my computer is messing with my fonts.

Do you have the cable/dsl modem plugged into the WAN port on the router...not any of the LAN ports??

We have a DSL modem and bought a wireless router. They were clashing, so we had to bridge the modem to the router in order for it to work. We called tech service and they walked us through it. Good luck!

Is this a cable modem? If so once you connect the cable modem to the WAN port on the router you may need to reset (actually hit the RESET button on the back of the cable modem) the cable modem to allow it to connect to a new device. Also this doesn't make sense "I go in and manually put it in DHCP" DHCP stands for dynamic host configuration protocol. Yes you need to set your router to DHCP but you cannot manually configure the settings for your IP, gateway, and subnet, because then you are configuring your device statically.

Are you having a problem with the router pulling the IP from the cable modem or are you having a problem getting your wireless connection to connect (computer to your router)?

Right now the problem seems to be that the router can not detect the Internet settings. It should be doing this but it is not. They have an advanced Internet connection page. I sat my connection to DHCP (that is what my ISP told me to do). It is a cable modem.

Does your modem have a reset button the back of it?

There is a standby button on the modem. There is not a reset button. I did power down all devices and restart but that did not work.

Hrm, is this a new router? Has it worked previously? If it's not pulling the info you might want to try a crossover cable (you can get it at the computer store looks like a normal ethernet cable) but I doubt you need that.

If it's not pulling info from the modem it's most likely the router. Check with your cable company if they might have another cable modem besides the one you have. If they don't it's basically all on you. But it could (very slight ) be the modem.

Alright, I had to re-boot the computer cold and that got it working. Now i just need to get it set-up on the other computers in the home.
