Do you cook?
Personally, I love to cook, and consider myself pretty handy in the kitchen. In fact, if I had to go back to school, I would probably go to chef school. Anyways, I just wondered if there were any other people on here that considered themselves a good cook.

I make dinner every night - wouldn't have it any other way. I know what foie gras is, but I've never used it at home.

I have a friend that is an excellent chef. This did not rub off on me.

Well let's see, I can follow a recipe... sure. I've burned a lot of food too: boiled eggs, Top Ramen, and other stuff. My biggest issue with cooking is adding salt... I tend to oversalt many dishes.

I'm a foodie and I cook every meal for my family. Sometimes I use recipes, but a lot of times, I just come up with things as I go (and they're usually great).
My family and friends have actually encouraged me to attend a culinary school, but I think the insane pace of restraunt kitchens would ruin my love of cooking. |
Started to cook at like 14 years old as my parents worked both out of my home so i started to cook the dinner myself. I really enjoy it, have read tons of books and i usually invent the recips myself based on other known recips, but giving them my touch. Also as i work from home while my wife works outside, i'm who cooks everyday. I also enjoy inviting friends to have diner and then i cook something exotic from other countries etc, always trying to surprisse them. I must admit i feel proud to be able to do something that not a lot of men do, also my wife does when her friends envy her husband :D

Out of my immediate family, my dad's the best cook, but he was also a firefighter.. and when you're on shift and it's your turn to cook, you catch hell if the food's bad.. so you learn too cook real quick. :D

I cook often, grill mostly, but I can cook inside as well. My family is big on cooking (and eating) so it comes naturally. My brother is actually a certified chef, though he got out of the business because of the hours and class of people you work with.

I can cook pretty good, but it is usually quicker to just nuke it in the microwave.

Yeah I cook. I made fettucine alfredo yesterday and put grilled chicken, brocoli, mushrooms and onions on top. I kick ass.

I enjoy to cook, but being a bachelor, its not as exciting to spend a ton of time in the kitchen knowing that I'll be the only one enjoying what I make. When I work at the station, however, I try to cook as much as possible and the guys seem to enjoy it---at least thats what they tell me! :)

I have about 3 or 4 meals I make, and that's it. People like what I make, but if you want variety you need to look someplace else. :D

Anyone ever made something along the lines of a Shrimp Alfredo dish?

Yup, made some a few months ago. I tried to make some home-made alfredo without a recipe using what I had lying around the house. The sauce didn't turn out so great, but overall it wasn't bad. :)

For the sauce you need about 6 oz. of heavy cream and 1 tbs of butter heat them up together then slowly add a cup of parm |
There was none! I just tried to make some with butter, parmesan cheese, whole milk, and garlic. And probably a touch of crushed red pepper (if it's not spicy I probably won't eat it ;) ) It came out pretty lump and I think I added too much cheese. The shrimp came out MUCH better. Cooked those suckers in some butter, garlic, and lemon pepper. Mmmmmm!

If I don't cook, I'll starve, or weigh 500 lbs from all the fast food.
Anyway, made Swordfish steaks tonight with some spicy saffron rice. Pretty tasty. Maybe I'll make up for it with Ramen tommorrow night ;). Or tacos... mmmm, tacos. |
Found this recipe:
Alfredo sauce Yields 4 cup 6 cups heavy whipping cream ¼ lb Butter 2 Tbsp. Garlic – chopped 1½ tsp. Kosher salt 1 tsp. White pepper 3 Tbsp. White wine (optional) 1 cup Parmesan cheese - shredded In a sauce pot over medium heat, cook the garlic and butter until soft. Add the heavy cream, wine, salt and pepper and reduce until a thin sauce consistency is achieved. Remove from heat and stir in the parmesan cheese. Note: Whipping cream bubbles over very easily. Keep an eye on it. If it begins to boil over, reduce the heat. What will the wine do taste-wise? |

Sure, I cook. I enjoy it, though sometimes I wish I would be more adventuresome with my recipies. Probably would if my kitchen wasn't so crowded - there is hardly ever room on the countertops or island to do much of anything. So for the most part, I end up fixing simple things (like the standby fish sticks, mac & cheese and a veggie combo...stuff that goes over well especially with the kids, but is less cooking than warming up really).

Last week I made a nice Grilled salmon with orange-pineapple salsa. Quite tasty.
For easter dinner, I made 2 recipes which I am very good with. My upside-down apple pie, and my scalloped potatoes. |
We need an "I used to cook before XXX was born, now I do instant" option.

i actually went to school and did it for a living for about a decade now it work in IT and we have an agreement i cook and my wife does the dishes(i also get home first and want to eat as soon as she gets home)

(1 chicken breast makes 5 enchiladas) Ingredients --- One good sized chicken breast Corn Tortillas 1.5ish Cans Enchilada Sauce (Hot) Cheese of Choice (I use monterray jack & chedder combination) Crushed Red Peppers Habenero Sauce Crushed Garlic Oregano --- Chop chicken into small, bite size chunks (faster to cook, and you're gonna shred it later) Coat a skillet with oil, add in a good amount of red peppers, a few splashes of habenero, garlic, and oregano. Heat the oil, toss the chicken in, and cook the chicken till it's done. Once done, drain off excess oil, place chicken on a plate, and shred it. Place chicken to the side. Soak enchiladas in sauce. Grab handful of chicken, place inside tortilla. Grad handful of cheese, place inside tortilla. Don't make it too gigantic, or they will be impossible to keep rolled up. Roll tortilla, place inside pan coated with Pam. Repeat till out of enchiladas. Cover enchiladas with good amount of remaining sauce, sprinkle top with cheese. Throw in oven at 350 for 25 minutes. Let sit another 5 before serving. And serve with Mexican or Spanish rice. |
I've always liked cooking and making random things in the kitchen. I've turned out to be pretty decent at it, considering I'm a picky eater, I'm never above just trashing something if I don't like it.
Anyway...I made Chicken Tikka Masala, my favourite Indian dish a few weeks ago and it came out pretty great. You have to improvise the recipes a bit, I printed two and still used more spices than they indicated, but..yeah. |

Well, I used to make Macaroni & Cheese from scratch in between rock climbing adventures. Then Kraft made the kind of Mac & Cheese that comes in a box. I would eat that in between power walks. Then Kraft came out with Easy Mac, which you just stick in the microwave. I would eat that in between episodes of Crocodile Hunter. Now they have Easy Mac cups, where you don't even need to mix anything up or grab bowls. I basically just lay next to the microwave all day with a box of easy mac cups within arms reach.

Bump, just to say I made homemade lasagna (totally from scratch) for the first time tonight.
And DAMN was it good. |
This has been my first year living off campus and I have improved my cooking skills tremedously. I can make the easy dishes like spaghetti or chicken alfredo with ease but I have also branched out to things like chicken parm from scratch and lets not even get started on the marinated meats I make on the george foreman. Unfortunately, I havent had any luck finding a girl to share these new skills with since me and my longtime girlfriend broke up..ah well Im only 20.
