OT: Cheap DVD Players?

I want to get my mom a cheap, BASIC DVD player for X-mas. What is the cheapest/simplest one out there?

vtbub 11-28-2005 11:47 AM

Look in Price Chopper.

Yes, I'm serious.

On this note... does anyone have one they'd like to sell me?

Cringer 11-28-2005 11:52 AM

We got one at Target for $29.99 over the weekend, but that was the bid post-Thanksgiving sale so notsure what the normal price is.

Just checked Wal-Mart's site and they have one for $38.76

Cringer 11-28-2005 11:53 AM

Dola- Wal-Mart has one for $29.83 also.

I would spend the extra $20.00 and get a DVD-VHS combo unit myself.

people still use VHS?

I would pay the extra $10 to make sure it plays DVD-R etc.

How important is it that a standard TV DVD player play VCDs?

I ask because I was sent a DVD that would not play on my cars DVD player, but would play on my computer and my home DVD Player.

Actually, the cheaper it is, the more likely it is to play any type of disc/format.

There a lot of great classics out there that aren't out on DVD yet, so yes I do.

When I worked at best buy (2003-2005) the cheapest DVD player was always the Cyberhome. I will warn you that you definitely get what you pay for. It is a piece of shit that was returned more than anything else in the store.

AZSpeechCoach 11-28-2005 08:38 PM

My first Cyberhome just burned out after about 2.5 years of use. It claimed that every disc that I had was a bad disc. The $40 Walmart Sanyo is working very well now (although it doesn't pick up where I stopped, I have to go back to the title menu each time I start it back up).
