It's not like he's from Boston. He was signed by the Red Sox as a free agent mercenary, its silly to act all upset when he leaves as one.

the only thing I can think of that was similar, was the signing of Bernie Williams that was nullified post strike.

and I'm not upset, molson.. he had $12 million more reasons to move to New York... just saying the folks who live with the Bos v NYY rivalry will look at this as treasonous.

It's silly to get upset at all when players move anyway...that's the way Baseball is now. I'm a long time Braves fan but I didn't hate David Justice, Greg Madux, Tommy Glavine, and now Julio Franco when they left for more money. Baseball is just a business now. There is no more team loyalty in the sport anymore. You will never see a player say "Hey...I played with the Sox once so I could never play for the Yankees. I played for the Dodgers once so I can't play for the Giants." They don't care. Fans shouldn't either anymore. You just root for the squad you have on the field in a particular season. The days of a player coming up with one team and staying there at a financial penalty to himself are over.

I bet the Sox fans wouldn't be so bent out of shape if Mariano Rivera was acquired to be their closer. You going to pelt him in the bullpen too?

yup. Makes some sense of the Yanks, but year 4 of that contract is going to be as bad as the last year of Bernie's. Moreover, Damon's defense is decent - but not great. As a direct move to weaken the Sox though - this is a good one. Wonder if they now want Dave Roberts (assuming the Wells - Roberts deal goes through) to fill the void ? Would be the popular move, and the discrepancy between the two isn't great.

I would take back Dave Roberts in a heartbeat. He can't hit like Damon, but is a better fielder and still has the wheels that Damon doesn't really have anymore.

I'd prefer Jeremy Reed for Arroyo and Wells for Gonzalez in possible, not sure that Wells would be enough though.

yeah, but the Mariners would be dumb to do that deal - Reed is amazing defensively and has a good minor league hitting record.

I think Wells would be more than enough for Roberts- in fact, I'd be surprised if a deal doesnt go down within the next month or so.

Great. A 33-year-old with a career OPS of .704 coming off a career year who stole a base here once and has far less range than Damon but the same raggedyann arm.

I don't really give a damn that Damon went to the Yankees. They offered more money. They tend to do that. It's not as if baseball's rules allow them to field more than nine overrated former All-Stars.

The Red Sox are saving a lot of money this off-season. They had better keep Manny and they had better keep upgrading the pitching.

i'm with Jim. Dave Roberts does nothing for me. Not even as a 4th outfielder. He was great for what he was, a bench guy. But I don't want to see him playing here everyday, and i don't even want to see him as the 4th outfielder. There's a million guys in Pawtucket with speed that can do that job (well not a million, but at least a couple in AAA/AA ).

Yeah, but given they want to deal Wells to San Diego and given Otsuka was just dealt, you have to believe Roberts makes the most sense in any deal. I think his range is slightly better than Damon's, and he will be an adequate (if not great) replacement. To me, the Sox need to figure their SS position - either give Pedoria the shot and call it a full blown youth movement, or sign Gonzales and tough it out for a year.

I'm not sad when a member of the Millar club leaves, even if that person is Damon.

They are not going to have as good of a year as we've become accustomed to(unless Beckett breaks out and Schilling is back to his old self). But I'll take that over the romper room of a team they've been. I've had a hard time liking this team ever since Nixon and Varitek's clubhouse attitude gave way to Millar's.

I think Johnny Damon revealed his true colors back in Royal blue, when he told the media that he was willing to sign for less money to stay in Kansas City while Scott Boras was telling the Royals to go jump in a lake.

I can understand the disdain some Red Sox fans have over this and I don't really think Damon is anything special, but I think Boston fans should be a little concerned that their ownership over the last few seasons has apparently made some rules to adhere by, namely not giving in to players' demands for longer contracts when they are a little bit older. While that is probably a sound business rule, it is not going to make the Red Sox a good team on the field if other teams are willing to go long term.

so i just heard Mike Adams say on EEI that Lucchino said earlier today that Damon leaving "won't affect our attempts to accomadate Manny's desire to leave." And I nearly swerved off the road. Not that I particularly like Damon or anything, heck I'm glad they didn't overpay to keep him, but this particularly means they CANNOT let Manny go for anything less than 100% value, because of the public-relations nightmare that might be, the way that would make this ownership group look like cheapskates without a defined plan.

hell at that point, even I might stop watching.
