Nepotism on a HS Basketball team
http://www.challengernky.com/article...c838379725.txt
This article REALLY pissed me off. It's from a guy on one of the nation's biggest radio stations (700 wlw in Cincinnati), who hosts local sportstalk and does a bit of writing in a local paper. He calls out a HS basketball coach who cut a friend of his son from the team. He not only does that, but he goes so far as to accuse the coach of keeping two kids on the team because they are the principal's sons. I KNOW the kid was cut because of attitude and a lack of a work ethic. The coach in question has won a state title from the small school tourney, and is generally thought of in the community as an extremely professional, and VERY well mannered guy (doesn't cuss at kids, etc.). Now, I coach baseball at a school that is a rival for the school in question. I get questions all the time from parents of kids I cut. I usually have between 100 and 120 kids come out for my jv and varsity teams, and keep around 30. So I'm cutting upwards of 90 kids a year, and have to deal with all the bullshit that comes with it. I cut kids face to face, and deal with the repricussions from parents. When I meet with parents, I inevitably face the age old question, well you kept player X, and my son is better than him. To which my response is......I will discuss why your son was cut, but I WILL NOT discuss other kids on the team. EVER. My question is, is there any legal repricussions this asshole blowhard could face for naming these kids in his article? |

I can't imagine they would be, assuming that the information in the article is accurate. And even then, it'd be a long road for anything legal that a correction of factual error wouldn't overcome. And, honestly, unless the kid with 3 mins per game of playing time on jayvee is like 6'10" & a "project", cutting your leading incoming scorer but keeping the end of the bench kid does warrant at least a briefly raised eyebrow. (FWIW, I suspected Furman was the author in question before I ever clicked the link) |
