OT: Stephen King story ever a movie?

I loved "The Mist" and tend to read it once a year. Great horror story. While a bit sci-fi, it certainly tugs at you in a good way.

Has there ever been a movie done of this story? I remember the old movie "The Fog" with Hal Holbrook. That wasn't based on the movie from what I remember. The new one that came out last year was an adaptation of the 79 movie.

I doubt "The Mist" was ever touched. It would be cool to see if it was though.

Well, the tug can be done easily, but "The Mist" requires some sort of mesh covering....

Ah, hell, I tried :D

wow! that made me spit my coffee. (and that isn't some insinuating reference). :D

gkb 01-25-2006 04:04 AM

I don't think there was ever a movie made from this short story. It's one of my favorite's as well. I wish he had made it into a full-length novel.

cthomer5000 01-25-2006 05:54 AM

I definitely agree it had/has some potential for a movie. I could have sworn i heard there was a movie being made about it at some point in the 90s, but obviously nothing ever came of that.

cthomer5000 01-25-2006 05:58 AM

dola. Just did a search and found a blog that makes it look like perhaps Frank Darabout (Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) is working on it.

wow! good find! thanks.

JeeberD 01-26-2006 10:52 AM

Very cool! I've always enjoyed the story but apparently it had been licensed out to film for about 20 years now and nothing ever came of it. I'm very glad to see that's now changed...

Hurst2112 01-26-2006 11:23 AM

hopefully they don't make more of the brief affair between what's his nuts and what's her name.

hehe

JeeberD 01-26-2006 01:08 PM

Mmmm...they need a sexy redhead for that role. Wonder who they're going to get?

how old was she? I read that story a long time ago.

If she's older I'd toss out Julianne Moore, if younger lets go with Alicia Witt.

JeeberD 01-26-2006 01:21 PM

I'm thinking she was late twenties/early thirties. Re-read the story a few months back but don't remember that exact detail, though...

Laura Prepon would be delicious.....specially if the movie required nude scenes:D

rkmsuf 01-26-2006 01:22 PM

hooters, hooters, hooters.

Rasmuth 01-26-2006 02:40 PM

Alicia Witt is a great choice...

I wish they'd make a movie version of "Eyes of the Dragon"....

OMG!!!! I just fell backward in time to 7th grade...

my mom was leary about me reading that. that was the time when rumors of kids playing D&D were going around neighborhoods killing animals, acting out their quests. I had to tell her that because it said the words Dungeon and dragon in the summary, it wasn't affiliated with that stuff.

It was a very, very good book. I would probably read it again for nostalgia sake.

Hurst2112 01-26-2006 05:13 PM

Dola:

good book meaning that it was very entertaining back then. I hadn't yet read Tolkien so...i might have been jaded.

Swaggs 01-26-2006 05:54 PM

Which release was this one in? I don't believe I've read it before.

Off topic, but has anyone gotten their hands on King's new novel? The reviews make it sound like it is vintage King.

Rasmuth 01-26-2006 06:25 PM

Eyes of the Dragon was a separate book...Steven King wanted to write a story he was comfortable for his 10 or 11 year old daughter reading...so he wrote it....

its a wonderful story of good versus evil...

Swaggs 01-26-2006 09:11 PM

I mean "the Mist."

I've read (and really enjoyed) "Eyes of the Dragon."

Rasmuth 01-27-2006 11:12 AM

It was in "Night Shift" or "Skeleton Crew". Can remember which one. I think Skeleton Crew.

JeeberD 01-28-2006 12:36 PM

Yup, Skeleton Crew.

I always loved Eyes of the Dragon. I don't know how many times I've read it, but it's been a bunch. Of course, I've read most of King's novels a bunch of times.

Haven't picked up Cell yet, it may have to wait until the summer when I have more free time to read...

Swaggs 01-28-2006 06:03 PM

I had Skeleton Crew on my bookshelf and read "the Mist" last night (finished at 3:30 AM). :)

Good stuff. I really love survival/catastrophe type stories like it.

Swaggs 05-16-2006 10:53 PM

Bump. This seemed like an appropriate thread for some good news for King lovers. :)

he still tied it in with the Dark Tower saga, though.

Rizon 05-16-2006 11:01 PM

Great story. The SC was a great book too.

Groundhog 05-16-2006 11:10 PM

You know, that perfect little village that they stumble accross in the movie Big Fish always reminded me of something out of "They've Got One Hell of a Band".

JeeberD 05-17-2006 07:50 AM

The Road Virus Heads North is a hell of a story. Hopefully I'll be able to catch these, but I'm afraid that I'll be working...

Just remembered this starts tomorrow night - thought I'd bump for the other King fans that forgot as well.

He was griping about some project based on his works going up against the American Idol finals on his website a while back.

That rant was hilarious to read.

They will just change her hair color to brunette like they did with the lead role in the Da Vinci code. That chick was supposed to be a red head too.

Swaggs 07-12-2006 07:27 PM

Bump again...

The first two episodes of Nightmares & Dreamscapes aire tonight on TNT, beginning at 9:00 PM EST.

cthomer5000 10-24-2006 02:57 PM

Apparently The Mist is still happening. Some words from Frank Darabount himself on it:

mrsimperless 10-24-2006 03:50 PM

That article doesn't exactly get my hopes up for the movie. It'll still be a definite must see though and I'll hope for the best.

JeeberD 04-07-2007 08:27 PM

Author and Stephen King fan Bev Vincent managed to visit the set of The Mist. Looks like it's going strong!

Frank Darabont has only done the 2 best Stephen King movie adaptations of all time and one of those also happens to be one of the best movies of all time period. Why would this be destined to disappoint?

The trailer looks pretty weak to me, personally. That's why I say that.

cthomer5000 11-24-2007 09:05 AM

Has anyone else seen it? Exactly what I expected based on the trailer... a b-level movie.

Marcia Gay Harden was especially over the top in this one.

Kodos 11-24-2007 09:20 AM

Looks like I "Mist" this one!

I guess i'm not the only one with no shame. I called it a "Mist" Opportunity on my podcast yesterday. :D

SteveMax58 03-29-2008 10:53 PM

Bump for those interested.

I just saw The Mist tonight...I have not read the book, so make of that what you will, but I had no preconcieved notions when I sat down to watch it.

I liked it...but it had about 3-4 blatantly amateurish moments, and debatably 3 or more in addition. If you can look past (what I consider to be) typical over the top King characters (at least in the movie versions), then you might enjoy it. If you have no idea what the storyline is about, I would suggest keeping it that way (dont even read the back of the DVD) if you are willing to live dangerously.

Nothing top notch about it...but very entertaining...in a "I am Legend" or "28 weeks later" sorta way. My tolerance for poor acting is a bit high, so YMMV.

Drake 04-01-2008 09:04 PM

I just saw this. I can't even be coherent about it right now, so I blogged my thoughts:

Warning: spoilers abound!

I honestly could not have agreed with you more. Spot on.

SteveMax58 04-01-2008 09:23 PM

Yeah...good writeup Drake. I did not read the original book, but I have to say I thought the "big scene"(trying not to spoil it for others) was completely tacky and unecessary.
