Thanks, MIJB. I think that will help some people. I'm not good at doing charts and such. :)

GreenMonster 01-27-2006 12:21 PM

I like vtbub..

Singletary in football is kinda a weak pick compared to the rest but overall a solid team with good wildcard and other picks..(Graff, Nicklaus)..

Butter 01-27-2006 12:54 PM

I'm gonna go with ThunderingHERD on this one. I can't call into question any of those picks, and I especially think that George Mikan was an inspired pick, along with Diego Maradona in the late rounds.

ISiddiqui 01-27-2006 01:02 PM

I'll go with HERD and General Mike a close 2nd. Strong throughout.

Abe Sargent 01-27-2006 01:10 PM

I like DannyTorgo's Pele pick, I think that was inspired.

Tough call, but overall I'll go with HERD. Just looks to be the most consistently strong to me.

Buccaneer 01-27-2006 06:40 PM

HERD is weak in football, imo. Got to go with Schmidty - a very strong team.

General Mike 01-27-2006 07:06 PM

Oh come off it. I have the 2 best baseball players of all time, and the 2 best defensive lineman of all time. My other picks are all solid. I win.

DaddyTorgo 01-27-2006 07:11 PM

I have the 2 best wildcard athletes you could possibly wish for. Both the unquestioned best in their sports, the winningest pitcher of all time (from an era where pitchers pitched complete games back-to-back all the time), the greatest slugger of all time (arguably tied with Ruth for that honor...his HOF plaque says he hit "well over 800 HR's", highest BA in Negro League history), the most unstoppable offensive force in basketball history, two HOF QB's, one who holds a ton of passing records and the other with the career QB-rating record, a HOF winger who was the poster boy for an entire LEAGUE and was the offensive force of multiple decades.

and my 2nd bball and hockey players are no slouches either. One is a points-man galore (dionne) and the other was one of those who just wins. championship after championship (havlicek).

how can my team not get your vote?

st.cronin 01-27-2006 07:12 PM

I voted for Schmidty, even though I think Yzerman is overrated.

AstroFan 01-27-2006 07:19 PM

I would go with General Mike.

Babe Ruth is the best baseball player ever, Honus Wagner is arguably the 2nd best player, and unarguably by far the best shortstop ever.

Magic Johnson is the best PG ever.

Mike Schmidt is the best 3B ever.

Hakeem is one of the best Centers ever.

Rocky Marciano was undefeated.

Gordie Howe is a top 5 hockey player.

Deacon Jones and Reggie White are two of the best defensive linemen ever.

sabotai 01-27-2006 07:22 PM

I vote Taz with General Mike and HERD coming in close runner up spots.

Buccaneer 01-27-2006 07:33 PM

Just for fun since I followed the draft pretty closely, I assigned a score of 1-5 to each player drafter and then averaged the scores by owner. Here's what I got, giving my personal comparisons, biases, likes, dislikes, etc.

ThunderingHERD 01-27-2006 07:36 PM

Had to go with my own team on this one. The two greatest hockey players ever according to many. The greatest boxer "pound-for-pound" ever. In the 8th round I got the greatest basketball player of the first half of the century. With the 2nd to last overall pick, I got a guy that was won more than 50% of the vote in an official FIFA poll as the greatest soccer player of the century. And there goes Ted Williams, the greatest hitter that ever lived. I got Dick Butkus, the greatest linebacker ever. OJ Simpson, the greatest wife-and-a-waiter murderer ever.

If I couldn't pick myself, I'd probably have to go with General Mike, with honorable mention for Maple Leafs for having the strongest first half of the draft.

Are you sure or is it just those that think sports did not exist before 1980? Gretsky, absolutely, he got a 5. But I had GHowe, Orr, Richard, Sawchuck and Roy up there too.

I'm not about to speculate on the many's other opinions. :)

Buccaneer 01-27-2006 07:49 PM

Plus Hull, of course. I had a typo that would put Torgo at 4.0, a close 2nd to Schmidty.

Call me a sucker for punishment, but seeing as how I'm pretty much getting spanked in the poll, I'd be curious to see which picks (whether just for my team, or overall) that you felt were the strongest/weakest.

I think it would have been interesting to randomly pair off the teams and do the voting tourney style, could have created some interesting matchups (pure athletes vs groundbreakers/those who fought through adversity to achieve what they did/etc).

As if my votes mean anything. But remember, this is in part a popularity contest and in my view, a ranking contest. While you had great picks in Rice, Aaron, West, Big Train and Babe, your hockey players suck compared to others. Owens is a good pick but not compared Babe and Carl Lewis, imo. Plus I didn't like the Moon pick. ;)

Buccaneer 01-27-2006 08:10 PM

By the way, in my rankings, you scored in 3rd place (i.e., not spanked), along with most of the others. So that's pretty good. :)

some very strong teams, but I'm going with kcchief19. It was VERY close, though.

Almost went with the Detox team, but wrasslin' isn't a sport.

Wow, I personally thought the hockey picks weren't that bad. Guy that is arguably one of the top 3-5 goalies of all time plus a top 5 defenseman of all time (if not in the top 2 or 3).

Moon, well, that's a homer pick seeing as how he started his career here, and the fact he helped pave the way for black QB's, figured that was a nice addition to his professional stats.

But I can definitely see where you're coming from. My strategy of offsetting athletes that overcame adversity with some outside the box picks (Tretiak, Babe, Moon) isn't paying off all that well so far.

DaddyTorgo 01-28-2006 01:58 AM

what's up with some participants voting for themselves and others voting for other participants?? that's skewing the voting #'s a tiny bit. And making me wonder if I should vote for myself to offest that, or vote for someone else? I think we need a ruling on what's up with that...

Well, I voted for vtbub. I got involved a little late, but I tried my best to vote objectively, and I feel vtbub has the best team overall...

ThunderingHERD 01-28-2006 03:21 AM

I will agree that I'm weak in name value at american:) football. I certainly mulled that over after making a self-interest pick (Musial, who I've always thought was underrated. Not that I consider the pick a stretch talent wise--only value wise) and then considering how football players would be, for obvious reasons, more appreciated on this forum than other athletes.

Looking at it objectively, the only thing I'd change about my draft would be my 4th round pick--either drafting an NFl player or, had i still chosen to finish out my baseball slots, drafting Mantle (even though I feel he's an inferior player, he's certainly a bigger name.)

Believe me, I came into this thread determined to vote for someone else's team--only I couldn't find any better.

oykib 01-28-2006 04:47 AM

I'll have to mull it over for a while.

During the draft, I had General Mike clearly ahead. But DaddyTorgo's and ThunderingHerd's teams are good as well.

vtbub is almost as good. But I don't like Clyde and Emmitt Smith so much.

I think it's easiest to eliminate teams based on bad picks:

Raiders Army - Meadowlark Lemon (clever, but...) and Nolan Ryan

Maple Leafs - Jackie Robinson

Schmidty - Pete Rose, Pistol Pete

kcchief - Gayle Sayers, Roberto Clemente

vexroid - Bo Jackson, Brooks Robinson

DeTox - Kurt Angle?!!!, Cal Ripken, jr.

Can't say that I have a serious problem with any picks other than these. I got a rep for sniping during the draft thread. But I am surprised by how well the majority of the drafters did.

Well, you did get my vote. :D

The Eddy Merckx and Pele picks were by far the best other/wild card picks. Granted, my knowledge of the big four sports is worse than my cycling and soccer knowledge, but given the names of Wilt Chamberlain, Steve Young and Bobby Hull, that secured it for me.

Vtbub scored a negative on my page for picking Steffi Graf. Granted, she dominated the women's tennis tour, but ever since Venus Williams declared she could beat a random male tennis player and got humiliated by a guy ranked about 250th, I had to penalize that selection for not going with a male tennis player like Roger Federer, Andre Agassi, John McEnroe or another sports great. (Maybe it sounds sexist, but I looked at this from a get-the-best-human-beings contest, not a get-the-best-compared-to-their-competition contest.)

Kcchief scored negatives on going with Lance Armstrong for similar reasons. Fine, Armstrong decided to introduce something new and be the best at that. I would even say he's the best ridr of the last decade. But that doesn't make you better than Merckx, Miguel Indurain, Bernard Hinault or Fausto Coppi.

Schmidty 01-29-2006 12:00 PM

Quick bump to get this back on the top 2 pages.
