Seeking input on RBs in NCAA/NFL
Washington state landed a solid running back from Spokane this recruiting class named Skylar Jessen. He’s listed as 5-11, 200 and runs a 4.47, and Scout.com lists his positives as acceleration, breakaway speed, and foot quickness, with negatives in change-of-direction and elusiveness. He is a three-star recruit and is ranked as the #66 running back in the nation.
Oh yeah…he’s white. Thus the reason for my post. I’m sure there are other white RBs out there in Division I, but I can’t place any who excelled, at least off the top of my head, in recent years. With the exception of Brad Hoover, who is now a fullback for the Carolina Panthers, I can’t recall any white running backs in the NFL recently either. Certainly not ones with speed as their main attribute. Can anyone think of any other examples? |
Mike Alstott?

If we're just talking guys still in the NCAA's, Kyle Bell from Colorado St was 19th in rushing yards in the nation this year.

Robert Smith was almost white.

Luke Staley (BYU years)?
Edit - considered a power-runner, though never listed as a FB/TB tweener. If the NFL draft site is to be believed, Staley had a faster 40 time than that WSU guy at the beginning of the thread. http://www.nfl.com/draft/2002/profiles/staley_luke.htm |

Seahawks drafted a guy out of Canada last year (Jesse Lumden). He tore it up during his University career, but pretty much had to replace Mo Morris as the primary backup to Alexander if he wanted a roster spot. He ended up getting cut and is now the starting RB for the Hamilton Tigercats in the CFL. Seems to have a pretty good mixture of speed and power, will be interesting to see how he does as a starter for a full season (especially now that they have a decent QB).

Teams should be required to interview a white running back candidate before they sign a black running back.

Has signed with the 'Skins for two years. |
Doesn't Rutgers have some white guy who's always jumping over people. I don't know if he's any good, but he makes the highlights alot.

Really? How long ago? I don't know what his deal was with Hamilton, but I thought he wouldn't be able to sign with a NFL club again until heading into his final season (and had assumed he signed more than a 2 year deal with the Ticats). -------edit--------- N'er mind, found an article on it online. Just happened and he was already in his option year. Silly Ticats, trade a top 5 back in the CFL to open the gates for your 1st round pick from last year, then lose him back to the NFL. Gotta think they're hoping he gets cut coming out of camp. |
Hot off the wire (well, kind of ):

Dustin Fox was listed as a CB/S during the draft, and may end up playing CB at some point. Last year I think he worked mainly at safety before being injured and placed on the IR during training camp. |
Heath Evans played tailback for the Patriots this season in a few games. And did quite well. Corey Dillon was calling him 'Riggins' in his sarcastically charming way. They moved him back to fullback for the playoffs where he was once again mediocre at best.
