So... My monitor may be dying...

I turn on the ol' family computer today, and there are rainbow colors radiating in a circle from the center, which looks washed out, but otherwise normal. Monitor in death throws?

At first I thought this was a parody thread of someone's mom dying. Then I thought that would be way too low. Wouldn't it?

jeff061 02-06-2006 08:33 PM

Degauss it?

Yes it would.

It's no parody. My screen looks like a circular rainbow. Has anyone ever encountered this before?

jeff061 02-06-2006 09:38 PM

Gets rid of extra static electricity that can make funky things happen, should be an option on your monitor in the menus somewhere.

I saw something similar to that with a VERY old monitor when a magnet was dragged across its screen. However, that was a long time ago. I don't know if current monitors would react the same way.

Wow! Degauss did the trick. Thanks Jeff!

Here's what it looked like:

Although Kodos' problem has been solved, I wanted to respond to this. Any color CRT tube can be f-ed up by a magnet. The "newer" monitors and TVs have the degauss coil built in to help fix this. I remember my teacher demonstrating this phenomenon in middle or high school. He screwed up the screen with a magnet, then had some special coil of wire that he moved in circles in front of the screen to fix it.

Yeah, my old monitor use to get blue and green tint if the speakers were to close to it.

Yep. It worked for me last night at home, but not at work. Just picture a tie-dye screen and you'll have it.

Maybe this one will work:
