2006 FOFC Hardcore Baseball League (Draft Underway!)

This is a continuation of this thread 2006 Yahoo Fantasy Baseball, specifically for the one league.

Current Notes
*Draft underway!
*Draft Spreadsheet: http://www.sunflower.com/~sterlingice/fofcdraft.htm
*Draft board in post #2

I'm thinking of starting the "slow live" draft on Monday with the following rules:
1) You have 24 hours to make your pick. However, try to take less than that as if everyone takes that much time, it will be 3 seasons from now before we finish the complete draft. Try to check every morning and night, particularly if you know your pick is coming up.
2) I will try and maintain a spreadsheet with the picks, making them easier to keep track of and host it on my own site. That will be posted once we start.
3) If you know you're going to be gone and might miss a pick (ie you could pick in any 24 hour period so no "I didn't think the draft would get back to me"), you can either email me a list or designate a proxy in the thread (I nominate "User X" to pick for me). Probably best to use someone not in the league so that there is no potential conflict of interest.
4) If you go 24 hours without a pick, you will get the highest player left on the board on the Yahoo O-Rank at that time, regardless of position, injury status, etc. We have to be unbiased about this automated process. Once the 24 hours are up, either I will post the pick if I'm on or another player may post it as "List Pick" for that team so that we can proceed with the draft. I trust that list picks will be honest unless we have problems (ie "I want the next person on the O-Rank list so I'll say the next person instead in the thread and pick the other guy").
EDIT: 4A) Here's an updated list of the O-Rank that players will be chosen off of if we have to "cpu pick": website. And here are some general notes about it: post.
5) If you miss 2 picks in the draft, you are out and another owner will replace you with your currently drafted team and continue drafting from there.

A couple of notes from another post:
Quote:

A last couple of things before the draft:
* Draft picks go in this thread.
* There is no trading of picks but you can trade players picked, of course. So, if you want to give up 1.1 and 2.12 for 1.12 and 2.1, you just trade those players who were picked but you have to wait until we finish the draft.
* The clock for the first pick officially starts at 12:01am CT Monday morning. However, if Simms (and anyone else, in order) wants to make their picks, they're free to. However, any pick made before 12:01am will count as a pick made at 12:01 for the purposes of having a late pick. So, if Simms picks at 9:35pm CT and Ramzavail picks at 9:40pm CT but CleBrownsFan doesn't realize we've started early, he still has until 12:01am Tuesday before the list picks for him. This, of course, only counts for the first day- we're just assuming any early picks are at "12:01" so no one gets screwed by us starting early. So, in short, you can start early but we aren't going to penalize anyone for it.
Quote:

Ok, this was part of the reason for avoiding trades- we've gotten to a pick and now everyone has to wait for a trade rather than picking and moving along. So I guess we do kindof allow trades as there was one earlier in the day despite the "no trades allowed" unless there are objections.

So, here's the deal: if you post about waiting for a trade, you have an hour to complete the trade. You still have your full time to pick (24 hours) but if you're around and posting for a trade, you should be looking for what player to pick not "holding the draft hostage" until you get a deal. You can still always trade players after the draft.

Old News

Check the stat categories, rules, etc. Do we need to change up one of the categories? How about the minimum IPs? Too many bench positions? We gotta figure these things out in the next couple of days *before* the draft.

Everyone who is in the league, post here as a "check in" and if you have some thoughts about the rules, go ahead. We'll debate them for the next couple of days and see what needs to be changed.

Checked in - how will we determin draft order? FYI - I'll play with any rules you'all want to play with. I'm easy

sterlingice 02-15-2006 02:29 PM

Good question- how does random number generator and me rolling a d12 work? There's no nice way to verify if I did it, tho. Is there any other method that people prefer? It's a snake draft so it ends up being fair in the end, but I, like I'm sure most people, prefer some spots to others.

SI

kingfc22 02-15-2006 02:32 PM

Checking in. RNG and dice roll sounds fair enough.

Johnny93g 02-15-2006 02:34 PM

im fine with the setup and the rules, and looking forward to the draft

sterlingice 02-15-2006 02:46 PM

Heck, how about this? I'll roll the order now and post it to a file on my desktop (so it's time stamped). Then everyone in this thread can pick a number as they check in and I'll get the last one. Once everyone has picked a number, I'll post the order to my webpage.

Checking in. Everything looks good to me.

In order for this to be considered a Hardcore league you would need more teams to increase the difficulty of the league.

12 teams for a league where you get both National and American league players seems a little Soft to me.

Simms 02-15-2006 03:57 PM

Name Withheld checking in. Rules are fine. Ready when you are.

That will be okay with me - As long as I don't have the number 1 pick ;)

I'll take the number 6.

I figure I'll just let everyone pick a number. Since they're ordered on the page, that's the order the teams will be in (i.e. if number 6 is the number on line 1 then Bearcats goes first).

That is what is happening- it is random, tho I guess I didn't explain it very well. I have a list of numbers 1-12 in random order that I rolled up yesterday afternoon and whereever your number is, that's where you pick (so, if the #10 was first, you'll pick first, if it's last, you pick last, and anywhere between, well, you get the idea).

Check in by Saturday so we can get things sorted out and ready to go by Monday. If they haven't checked in by, let's say 6pm CT Saturday, we have an opening or two.

Troy Trojans

Ok, if the other team doesn't check in, he gets booted and I'll PM Ramzavail. If anyone else decides they want to drop out or if he doesn't PM back by Sunday night, the spot is bub's.

Keep in mind- you have to pretty much check the draft at least twice a day and these usually take 3-4 weeks. If you're not willing to do that, please get out now- we don't need a bunch of people who will be "Oh, that guy, we're waiting on him again".

Also, I don't suppose everyone has some form of IM so we can keep in touch quicker?

Still about 30 minutes left- I won't be watching the clock too closely but I'll try to get one to you in the next hour after that, provided I don't hear anything.

Also, you get to decide 2 or 11 for your number, provided you get a slot. Then I'll get the last one and post the draft order.

I renamed to the Lawrence Lumber- used that last year and had a nice ring to it. Plus, I have a Houston team in each league so I didn't want to have any confusion. I guess that gives me #11.

Here's the draft order:

9
2
10
5
11
4
7
1
3
8
6
12

It's been posted to:
http://www.sunflower.com/~sterlingice/draft.txt
And somehow has a 2/19 date stamp despite my computer only being 2/18 today and it being rolled up a couple of days ago...

Ok, anyways, so that means the draft order is as follows- remember, it's a snake draft for fairness (the number after was the number picked):
1. Name Withheld 9
2. Jockitch 2
3. Dog Pound 10
4. BigMac'sSpecialSauce 5
5. Lawrence Lumber 11
6. Troy Trojans 4
7. Big Raf Machine 7
8. Butch Wynegar 4 HOF 1
9. Fremont Firebirds 3
10. Fat Bastardo's 8
11. Bearcats 6
12. Johnny93g's Jays 12

I'm heading off to go eat but start thinking about your draft picks. The draft starts Monday at 12:01am.

Any last minute rule changes or people who want to drop out?

SI

Simms 02-18-2006 09:47 PM

Crap.

sterlingice 02-18-2006 10:15 PM

I dunno, I like picking at 1. I prefer 12 and 11 most but after that, I prefer 1. I like having the double picks. Easier to plan for in my mind.

SI

sterlingice 02-19-2006 05:09 AM

Ok, whipped up a little spreadsheet where all I have to do is enter a player and position and everything else automatically updates. I'll try to update as fast as I can during the draft. BTW, if a player has more than one position, I'll just put the one he "best" fits at- it's not as if he is limited to just the one position but I didn't want to do the extra work on the spreadsheet to allow for multiple positions.

The link is in the top post.

Again, any last minute thoughts on the rules? Should we go RF, CF, LF rather than 3 OF? Change the stat categories? Put squirrels in the pants of the 12th place finisher?

SI

Ramzavail 02-19-2006 09:35 AM

RF,CF,LF is hardcore, I like that.

Edit: How about a cap on waiver moves? It's more difficult to worry about a cap then it is to make daily transactions every day.

MizzouRah 02-19-2006 10:04 AM

Personally, I just like 3 OF's.

I prefer pick #12 myself or #1, but middle of the pack should be interesting.

Simms 02-19-2006 10:44 AM

Separate OFs is hardcore, yes, but there is a very uneven distribution of talent across the three positions, and injuries can fuck you hard. From experience, I *hate* LF/CF/RF and would much prefer to go with 3 OFs. But I'm in no matter what, so if mine is the minority opinion, so be it.

Well, I kindof like that aspect of it. It keeps people from just sitting back and grabbing super OFs in the 3rd, 4th, 5th round after all the talent from other positions is off the table because of a dearth of talent. Basically, gives some positional scarcity to the outfield, too (particularly CF), so the first two rounds aren't just elite pitchers and positional scarcity guys.

That said, so far there have only been a couple of people to chime in. I'd be curious to see what others think before making any rule change.
