MySpace question...

If I remove someone from my "Friends" list, do they get a notification that I've done so?

TLK 03-06-2006 03:25 PM

I'm almost a 100% sure that the answer is no.

Franklinnoble 03-06-2006 03:28 PM

You're about to shatter the frail ego of a 14 year old girl, aren't you?

Anthony 03-06-2006 03:32 PM

listen, i can take a hint. you don't have to drop these veiled threads. i know where we stand.

Close. 17-year-old, and that's precisely what I'm wondering. I just discovered that some time today, she posted a wholly inappropriate--and perhaps even illegal, given her age--picture as her *profile* pic, which was therefore appearing in my friends list. I want to be known as a "friend of sinners," to be sure, but I am not interested in going to jail, either.

As for the original question, after posting here, I called SWMBO to help me test it out. SWMBO created an account, added me as a Friend, and then took me off, and no, I received no notification.

You just had to post this description, didn't you.

Well, FN asked, and, quite frankly, it is incredibly sad and disturbing.

It's MySpace.

It's par for the course.

If this surprises you, you probably shouldn't have a Friends list there.

What's the ruling on things like this? Can Myspace get in trouble if she is under-age for wherever she's from (including if that eans a country that has an age level of 21 or something)?

I've seen hundreds (probably thousands?) of pics on Myspace, and plenty of over-the-line ones, but I've never run across one like this one.

stevew 03-06-2006 03:48 PM

How inappropriate are we talking? Would you put her in the penalty box here for posting it? With of course the obligatory 7/18ths vote of current moderators here, and the inevitable 16 page bitchfest thread that would result.

I've caught one straight-up hardcore porn pics posted here briefly, but other than that, this one would rank as the most obviously NSFW pic ever posted at FOFC, I'm pretty sure. It would be an easy automatic boxing here, with no bitchfest whatsoever, the only comments being of the "what-the-hell-what-that-guy-thinking-posting-that" variety.

Wow. That girl sure needs to learn about red-eye removal tools. You'd think that would be second nature for the younger generation.

Jim did some net searching it seems

Anthony 03-06-2006 04:11 PM

it couldn't have been that good of a pic if the only thing Jim has to comment on is her red-eyes.

:eek:

I bow to your searching capabilities, sir, but you gotta PM me and tell me how the heck you did that.

duckman 03-06-2006 04:15 PM

Before we start asking for "links pls k thx," we should be asking the fundamental question here: is she hot? :D

Franklinnoble 03-06-2006 04:18 PM

Ben - as a youth pastor, don't you think it'd be better to counsel this girl about this photo?

At the very least, you need to tell her parents about it.

oliegirl 03-06-2006 04:18 PM

I thought the fundamental question was to ask SkyDog for a link to his MySpace page!

Its really easy on myspace to find someone if you know their e-mail..from there he just scanned your friends list id imagine...

Airhog 03-06-2006 04:20 PM

I just put in Ben e lou, and it took me right to ya. Guess you already removed the pic though...

1. For the 3598829489th time, I'm not a youth pastor. It woudl be a very rare church indeed that I would work for, to be honest.

2. Before I ever asked the question here, I took the first step toward making sure that she gets an appropriate and loving conversation about this. It would be best coming from a female, I think.

3. Without going into detail, it is rare for a kid to get to this point at her age without having some seriously screwed-up parenting going on to begin with. :(

But I took it off of my friends list before I ever posted here. Is it still there?

Maybe Jim saw it before you removed it...

As in he was checking out my MySpace profile randomly before I ever started this thread??? I guess that's possible, but what are the odds?

I just went through and its not, though "slam dunk the funk" is a hottie(shes my age, no worries)

Solecismic 03-06-2006 04:34 PM

No. I saw your profile later. And listened to a little music. I liked it, hadn't heard it before.

I'll shut up now if you prefer. She's obviously had a tough life, and probably doesn't need dirty older men ogling her. But I'd give her a 6, maybe a 6 1/2. Maybe knowing how easy that picture was to find for a forum full of 30-something football fans just based on a tiny bit of information would help your wife (or whoever you are asking to talk with her) realize how stupid it was to post it.

jbmagic 03-06-2006 04:36 PM

Why the hell a grown man join MySpace?

That place is mostly teens that join and go there now.

Solecismic 03-06-2006 04:42 PM

You'd be surprised. There are more than 40 million profiles on MySpace already. It's definitely captured the 20-something set already.

I've thought about creating an FOF profile, sort of a blog for development. But I don't like giving development updates on a regular basis.

Anthony 03-06-2006 04:42 PM

i'm on MySpace, you have to be in order to send messages to the people.

Originally, because hundreds of my kids and former kids are members. What's interesting is that over a short time I've discovered that MySpace and Facebook are great ways of mass-communicating with kids (we have over 100 kids in our "group" on Facebook that we send announcements to every week about our meetings), getting new kids involved, and even of having significant conversations with them (as was mentioned in this thread). For example, I posted the following message to the profiles of all of the high school kids that I have in my MySpace friend list:
Quote:

SUPER BOWL PARTY!!!

It is happening at Briarcliff United Methodist Church, and there's going to be the Super Bowl on a 52-inch screen plus LOTS MORE!!!! We've got great food (chili, wings, yummmmm), great friends, and lots of fun stuff going on if you're not that interested in the game. Here's a list of what will be available to do:

* LOTS of food (come hungry, 'cause there will be wings, chili, desserts, snacks, drinks, you NAME it!)
* The Super Bowl on a 52-inch TV screen! (Make sure to cheer for my good buddy Mack Strong, the Seahawks' long-suffering fullback.)
* full-court basketball
* ping-pong
* pool
* foosball
* board games
* TONS of high school people from LHS and THS

ALSO, don't forget that today is the deadline to get the price break for the Castaway Club trip. If you're not signed up, DO IT TODAY!!! Go to http://tuckeryl.younglife.org for more information.
Several kids who weren't previously involved saw the announcement on their friends' profiles, and showed up. Two of those kids who showed up for the first time to the Super Bowl Party have remained involved since then.

Skydog, if i take trip to GA would you mind hooking me up with one or two of those ladies? Best leave FOFC out of it though, chicks dont tend to love it

Yeah, there's definitely a significant out-of-college-to-age-30 presence there. I've reconnected with quite a few former YL kids through it and Facebook as well. One day, I'm going to systematically go through and do a search of graduating classes of the schools I've been connected with.

Ok, how are you on facebook...thats college only, and last time i checked you were not 20 :confused:

ScottVib 03-06-2006 04:57 PM

That's the thing in the news here in CT there have been several sexual assaults that are happening with 20/30 something year old guys going after the teens they "meet" on myspace.

CamEdwards 03-06-2006 05:08 PM

:( looking at some of these kids makes me really depressed. My only hope is that the pendelum will swing back towards the 1950's by the time Catherine hits dating age.

Karlifornia 03-06-2006 05:10 PM

Man, what about "Amy" she's hawt. Click on the chick with big blue eyes in Ben's top 8, and Amy is like the first or second comment on hers. The last two pics in her "View More Pics". Niiiice.

Is 22 old enough to qualify as a "Dirty Old Man"?

I believe we had something less serious but in that vein happening locally here as well. MySpace was the subject of a "parents, be sure you know what your kids are doing online and who they are talking to" letter from my son's school a couple of weeks back.

The site has now been banned from access on school computers & I got the impression that some additional disciplinary action was being taken against some specific high school students who were involved in something ... I dunno, "unsavory", through the site.

(Keep in mind, I live about a half an hour from those legendary "Lost Children of Rockdale County" so pretty much anything isn't beyond the realm of believability)

Neuqua 03-06-2006 05:35 PM

We gotta make an FOFC Group on facebook. All the cool people would flock to it.

Neuqua 03-06-2006 05:45 PM

myspace is the AA affiliate of Facebook.
