Nerds

Which group of guys would you consider the nerdiest? D&D guys? Star Trek conventioneers? Text-sim players?

SFL Cat 03-07-2006 10:21 AM

Hard to say, since there are probably a lot of people who could fall into all three categories...or at least two of the three.

So naive... So, so naive... The levels of Nerd/Geek run deep and are complex. Therefore, I shall present you the Geek Hierachy Chart. It will show levels of geekdom that many of you probably never knew (and could live a long, happy life without ever knowing) existed.

SFL Cat 03-07-2006 10:24 AM

lol. That's hilarious.

Honolulu_Blue 03-07-2006 10:26 AM

To answer the original question, according to The Chart the answer would be:

D&D (Role Players) and Strek Trek Nerds (Trekkies) are equally nerdy and both are more nerdy than text-sim players (video gamers).

SFL Cat 03-07-2006 10:32 AM

Where would the people who have regularly posted in the Maximum Football thread fall on this chart?

st.cronin 03-07-2006 10:33 AM

why isn't this a poll

Honolulu_Blue 03-07-2006 10:35 AM

Just off the top of my head, I would say around the "Fanfic Writer" level and then you bump it down a notch for those who did photoshop work for the thread, wrote a song for the thread, or wrote a poem (limerick, haiku, or other) for the thread.

SFL Cat 03-07-2006 10:35 AM

because only nerds create polls, or worse, politcal wonks.

Butter 03-07-2006 10:36 AM

The D&D players I know are kinda creepy and nerdy... but I know at least 3 other personal friends who play FM 2006 regularly, and I wouldn't consider them high on the nerd scale at all. So I'm going to go with the stereotypical answer of Trekkies. The real fanatics of that show send off that perma-nerd vibe that you just can't fake.

Becuase we have a defenitive chart. The poll would be useless and incorrect. It would be like having a poll and asking which of these numbers: 1, 2, 3, or 4, has the lowest numeric value. Sure, someone could vote for "4", but they would be wrong and look silly. We have enough of that around here without extraneous polls.

MORE POLLS, KODOS

I recall the documentary Trekkies, where they featured a woman who wore her Star Trek costume all the time, even when she reported to jury duty. That's messed up.

Raiders Army 03-07-2006 10:51 AM

What are furries?

Mustang 03-07-2006 10:53 AM

I know I'm a nerd because I understand that chart.

I personally think that SCA guys are the oddest of the lot. I once saw a guy who wore a costume at a Ren Faire that consisted of a long grey wig, football shoulder pads (as armor) and a stick..

sachmo71 03-07-2006 02:19 PM

nerds < geeks

They are people who like to dress up as animals by wearing life-sized animal suits. Then they typically (I think) like to have sex while wearing these animal suits. I think that's the big draw for most. I saw it on en episode of CSI once.

They have conventions and everything. They are big into anthropormorphic animal art/comics/cartoons as well.

In my mind there is a geek/nerd distinction. They are not interchangeable.

I consider myself a geek, not a nerd.

Playing D&D while wearing a Klima jersey is the lowest of the low :D

I reckon I've been there many times in either a Wings Kilma or Oilers Klima (only non-Wing jersey ever worn). I was cool.

I was actually going to create a poll based on the suggestions, with one of the options being creating polls. :)

I had the same exact reaction the first time I heard about it.

I think you got that reversed, according to the chart.

Draft Dodger 03-07-2006 03:37 PM

my wife used to be a bit of a Trekkie - I remember her wearing a Federation pin at work, and one time before we started dating she dressed as Data to attend one of the movies.

that's nothing compared to some of the D&D people I've run into over the years. wow, talk about scary. you know, guys who swing a pretend sword at the table when attacking, and having sound effects to correspond to whether they hit or not.

love playing D&D. hate 90% of D&D players.

I couldn't agree more. They are, for the large part, an annoying people. Though if you think bringing a fake sword to a table top game or making sound effects are bad, you should see some of the LARPers (eg The "lightning bolt, lightning bolt" crowd), yeesh!

Not according to how I interpret the chart. The higher up on the hierachy the less "geeky" you are (or the "cooler" you are). That's based on a simple observation of the difference between, role players and, say, live action role players.

it just happens to be one of the more tangibly describeable people. so many I've run into you really need to experience in person. as you well know

Gods yes... They are a unique people that must be experienced to be truly... appreciated shall we say.

Mustang 03-07-2006 04:55 PM

One of my bedrooms in my house..

I'm low on the hierarchy... real low...

Right, which means that RPG and Trekkies fall one level below video gamers. Although my willingness to argue this point probably drops me a notch.

Mustang 03-07-2006 05:00 PM

Unfortunately, there is more behind you in.. and that pic is several years old so ah.. there is more than that now.

It does, but being correct bumps you back up to even. I did write it wrong. My bad. ;)

I think there really needs to be a level of video gamers... because honestly, video games are the biggest entertainment industry in the world now... all of the "cool kids" are playing...

now, people out of their teen years who play video games.... errrrrr... uhhh....

After seeing a picture of mustang's room, I'm not even worried about it. ;)

Mustang 03-07-2006 05:07 PM

*L*

Thank god I haven't posted a pic of myself in 'What do you look like' thread.. I have no idea I'd be photoshopped right now. :D

Although.. in my defense.. the plates are my wifes Star Wars plates.

I ahh.. have a Lord of the Rings room too.. umm.. ya.

Indeed... This thread has certainly proved one thing true: "There are geekier and nerdier things than role players/Trekkies/text-simmers in the deep places of the world. . . "

Senator 03-07-2006 05:10 PM

Don't worry about it. At some point you can sell it all to someone like you, and retire in comfort.

This is the reason I did not marry a geek. Lady H_B is geek-tolerant and geek-friendly, but she is by no means a geek. I needed balance.

You and I have that much in common. My wife used to date cowboys and military guys... how she ended up with me, I still haven't figured out.
