Coaching scoop? I've got coaching scoop. Here's what I (and now you) are hearing:

Indiana: Brace yourself, because this is big... we're hearing that Hoosiers athletic director Rick Greenspan has had his interest piqued by Texas A&M coach (HWSNBN). And you know something? It makes sense. Hiring (HWSNBN) over Steve Alford wouldn't be the most politically savvy move Greenspan could make, but basketball-wise it would be brilliant. Alford would do fine at Indiana. (HWSNBN) would contend for national championships at Indiana. It's as simple as that.

Does anyone ever talk about Randy Wittman?

Time to test that theory of not needing a Indiana man, just needing a good basketball coach. I wonder if Alford does not get the job, did that lost cause it? He is not that much different as a head coach from the time Davis resigned.

He was the coach at UTEP for a year before leaving and going to Texas A&M.

Short store. He was the coach at UTEP, took the team from 6 wins to 24 over one season. Beloved by all of El Paso, rumors start that A&M is going to lure him. His response?

"I'll be here as long as you'll have me!" With tears in his eyes.

Two days after UTEP loses to Maryland in the NCAA tournament he leaves us high and dry for basketball nobody Texas A&M.

That's the basics...

I'd be pissed if a coach left after only one season, too.

Two seasons. Six wins his first season, 24 his next. El Paso fell in love with him quickly...even in the six win season the team played hard as hell, they just didn't have the talent to compete.

From what ive read about Gillespie, id love to have him at IU.....I think if we do get Gillespie, both DJ White and Robert Vaden stay.

Dear god, I know he is a Bill $elf disciple but I didn't know he followed after his mentor that much. Replace Gillespie with Self and El Paso with Illinois over a stretch of a couple of seasons and you have the same reason Illini fans now dislike Kansas' coach.

Indiana will have to fork over some serious cash to get Gillispie. After this season, I can't see my Aggies letting him go without a serious bidding war, and I'd take my chances that the Aggie athletic program has a bigger warchest to use than Indiana does.

I find it amusing that the A&M fan in this thread doesn't even know how to spell HWSNBN's name correctly... :)

I'm not going to cry over losing Self, because then we would never have gotten Webber who is a great coach. Not sure if he can recruit, but he can COACH!

Can you say Mark Cuban? I would take the bet that IU has more money that the Aggies do even with the budget crises that the school complains about.

On the other hand, I would say the IU job has a bit more prestige than the Aggie job. Football conference school vs an top basketball program. Support is higher for basketball at IU than A and M.

Expectations are higher for football than basketball in Texas, just like basketball is the rule of thumb in Indiana. They live and breathe hoops here.

Oh, I am CERTAINLY glad at the way things turned out, but I'm just saying that's how it all went down.

I still simmer a bit at Bill Self and it's not his fault ... he never should have been the coach at Illinois. Jon Sunvold led the search committee to pick the replacement for Norm Stewart, and he wanted Self to be the coach, but the AD Mike Alden favored Quin Snyder. Sunvold got Self and Snyder in a hotel in Kansas City together and had Alden interview them both and make his pick. The rest is history.

It is funny how things worked out for everybody.

Quin Snyder would be a perfect fit for your program. I believe he would be available to start right away. The past 6 years at Missouri has seen the recruiting classes ranked higher and higher and the performance lower and lower. Be careful what you wish for.

You don't think Self still wouldn't have bolted for KU two years ago? You have have been more pissed than you are about Quin. At least Quin didn't leave for KU, we got to get rid of him ourselves.

I for one don't want Alford here as coach. I like him- great player. But to leave Iowa and come here? They want his head in Iowa- what would change here? Do we really need a "home" grown coach? Get Dakich then. Or Whitman. We need someone who can really coach. Like him or not, Knight did a great job as a Coach. We don't need another Knight, but we need someone who can coach and will make the players run the plays.

You bought too much hype. The reason Quin is gone at Mizzou is that the players he recruited were not that good. The local media may have convinced you that they were, but they were overrated. If had really recruited good players, he'd still be there.

I'm really hoping Greenspan doesn't go for Alford. I want someone who is a proven elite coach.

No, for one simple reason -- he wouldn't have been on the candidate list. There is no way in hell Kansas would ever hire a Missouri basketball coach. The alumni wouldn't stand for it.

You hear any Mark Turgeon at Wichita State rumors to Missouri? Nope. Same reason -- Missouri would never hire a former KU player to run their basketball team. The rivalry is too fierce and emotions too great, particularly for the boosters who write the checks. The boosters at Kansas would never allow the school to hire a former Tiger player or coach to run their beloved program.

I'd have to go back and look at some of the runners-up for the Kansas job to see who they would have gone with. There were a couple of Roy Williams disciples on the short list, along with Turgeon who was deemed not ready yet.

The last few years there hasn't even been hype. Jimmy McKinney was supposed to be a savior and busted, but aside from that the only real gems have been Ricky Paulding, Arthur Johnson and Linas Kleiza. The local media hyped the first few Snyder classes over what they were, but I haven't seen Missouri mentioned as a top-25 recruiting class probably since the Paulding/Johnson class. His recruits kept getting more and more mediocre and he kept coaching them worse and worse.

I did see in the column noted above that Bob Woolridge might be a candidate at Southeast Missouri State. That seems nice. Woolridge seemed like a really nice guy who was a fair coach and recruiter but just didn't have the dynamic to make it work in the Big XII.

Cute response Butter... unfortunately that is probably true for most. Proven/unproven; alum/non-alum; whatever view- doesn't matter. What matters? Give me a coach that will enforce the fundamentals (ball-handling, defense, free throws, running an actual offense). I liked Davis and think he has great potential. I hope that AKennedy leaves UC, though he isn't in the exact same scenario- he at least has/had Huggy Bear's blessing, unlike Davis. I wouldn't wish the UC mess on him now. It will definately be interesting to see who gets hired...

Yeah, eff Alex Galindo, that useless piece of crap. ;)

Oh, and Luke Axtell, too. And Lester Earl. And any other transfer we had. Never liked getting players that way.

I may be in the minority, but I'm really starting to hope that Randy Whitman gets the chance to shine in Indiana next year. I think he would be the perfect fit, with NBA experience and he is an alum. :crosses fingers:
