I just got a jury duty summons for the week of May 8th.

I'm gonna let the gamers on this board see if they can figure out the source of my rage.

Given your profession, I think you should have no trouble getting it moved. Unless you really are planning on murdering someone. In which case, you'll be excused from jury duty, but you won't be able to attend because you'll be busy fixing up your new home with your new roommate, Bubba.

As a teacher I had no problem getting it moved to a break. Which I now regret as I'd have had an all expenses paid trip + a little spending money to Puerto Rico if I had just done it when they wanted me to.

Make sure you reschedule early, i.e., don't show up expecting to be excused. With CA's new one day/one trial system, they are fairly good about giving you one opportunity to reschedule, but once you are there, they expect you to serve.

In Colorado, you are allowed one free pass for jury duty.

It's not a profession, as such. More like an intense hobby until I can figure out a way to squeeze a paycheck out of it again.

And no, I'm not really planning on murdering someone. I'm going to try to get it rescheduled, and in the meantime just be glad that they didn't drop that on me for my trip to Chicago in June.

In the UK they send out Jury duty notices by normal post. I've done my juty (3 years ago) but I know a lot of folk who just ignore the post.

Since it's not recorded, noone has a proof that it was recieved. Some folk I know have said they've done this numerous times over a decade or so with no consequences.

And in the US, you'd have the sherriff (since it's typically sent by the county) knocking on your door with a summons for failure to report...

as it should be...

The last time I had to serve, everybody shows up to report. As soon as we get called to a courtroom, one jackass decided that there were enough people that he'd never be missed and he could sneak out and go home.

They did a roll call in the courtroom, and when he didn't answer, they adjourned for the day and sent the sheriff to get him.

The next day, everybody shows up and the judge says "Thank you for your service, a plea bargain has been reached."

No idea what happened to the dude who played hooky.

Well it's a cringe-worthy event, but some cringes are decidedly worse than others. :D

I wouldn't think you'd have a problem rescheduling. I had to reschedule mine twice and it was not a problem. I think they gave me something like a 3 month notice though (Michigan), so I had a bit more time.

Actually not the case in most places as I understand it. Same thing as described above. If the summons comes standard post, there is no way to verify that you had received the summons. I intended to throw away my next summons, after I got stuck with a month long, very stressful Jury experience. I just couldn't do it. I'm apparently of "lawful" alignment.

commit a felony(and get caught) and you will never have this problem again

Service = postponed.

And without ever talking to a real human. I guess the way they do it is, if they have jury duty openings for the period requested, they just remove you from one pool and put you in the other. No questions asked. If not, you're SOL.

This is my first time, is just pretending I never got it not a good idea? ;).

You could try rescheduling it for the 2nd week of July (week of July 3rd).

Could be you won't have to serve cuz the court will be closed.

I thought about doing that, but decided I'd feel guilty, so I scheduled it for two weeks after that instead.

I've done it three times now, maybe four. I've come away with a good experience most times. I'm big on Civil responsibility, so I think Jury duty is an important service that we provide to a civil society.

If your not in a position of missing out on vacation, or losing money, than it can be a nice change of pace. I've had mixed experiences in 4 calls.

1st time: Criminal court but way too many jurors scheduled for what ended up being one jury selected, not selected and it was a long day of waiting.

2nd time: Got selected on an assault trial, sort of amusing in a bizarro kind of way. Convicted him, mostly due to evidence that the defense attorney provided (very bizarre triel, did I mention?).

3rd time: Criminal court again and was called back three days but never picked on a jury (booted off one, when it seemed like all computer professionals were getting booted for some reason) and then was one of 3 people left in the pool on another jury (a big time murder one so I was glad to not be picked), that one almost seemed inevitable as everyone was being excused for one reason or another. The best thing about that was getting let go 3 of the days by 10 AM, it's nice that they don;t put a time on your jury duty slip. :D

4th time: Civil trial, got picked and served a week. An interesting experience but there was some boredom to it.

Eh, I wouldn't mind so much if I needed a breather from work. Not the case though, I like my job and would rather just keep at it. This just equates to an unplanned and unwanted interruption. I can take a day, but I really don't want to get selected.

That's just my juvenile side showing through ;).

What's the standard way vacation time is handled? I'll check with my boss, but I'm not planning on taking PTO. Especially since, due to a recent buy out, I'll be able to cash it out soon.

Depends on the state you're in. I think in California employers have to give you time off for jury duty, and aren't allowed to count it against PTO/vacation time.

Not scheduled to report tomorrow. One down, four to go.

I was called for Jury duty a few weeks ago, but I was being sent to Colorado for training for my job, so I had our Regional Director (I work for the US government) to send them a letter and they changed my date to... September 11th. Of course, being of Muslim origin, with an obviously Muslim name, I joke around that they did so they can send me to Gitmo on the 5th anniversary of 9/11 ;).
