Kosher-Coke
 

So anyways, I'm reading about this "Kosher" coke that is apparently available around the passover. Which is made with real sugar because corn syrup isn't kosher. Supposedly it has a different color lid and some hebrew letters on it. Has anyone stumbled upon this this year, as my interest has been piqued, and it theoretically should be much better than the standard coke classic. This is the "real deal" coke, as "Coke Classic" was the first version using the (cheaper) corn Syrup. I'm going to call the local bottler to see if it was even made locally, as I don't think there are many Jews around.

I've tried it. Same strung out feeling in the morning, but has a better nose feel.

I just got back from the Giant Eagle in Squirrel Hill (Jewish neighborhood in Pittsburgh), but I didn't see any kosher Coke in the kosher aisle.

Well around here there are a lot of Jews and so this isn't a problem. What you need to do is go to a major supermarket, or even, shudder, many walmarts and ask where their Passover pop is. I guarentee you it's there at any store with a good variety of KP (short for Kosher for Passover) foods.

Coke Classic was the first version to use corn syrup? Hmm, maybe that explains the whole New Coke fiasco. They wanted to switch over, but if they just made the switch, there would have been an uproar. So they throw new coke out there, anticipating the uproar, and then bring back classic coke with corn syrup so no on notices.

If there was a cola that still used sugar I would be all over it. I've pretty much banned myself from eating or drinking anything with corn syrup in it and I really miss a good simple can of pop.

I'll have to look for this sometime. There's probably a decently high Jewish population in my neighborhood -- hopefully I can find it here, instead of having to truck it all the way to Skokie!

Here's the official word from the Orthodox Union web site for Passover 2006:

Coca Cola will again be available with an OU-P for Pesach. Aside from the New York metropolitan area, Coke will be available in Boston, Baltimore-Washington, Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. This year, in New York, Coca Cola items will be made with an OU-P in 2 liter bottles and in cans. Other locations will have more limited Coke items made in different sizes. All these items, of course, require the OU-P symbol. Most of the bottling plants servicing these markets will designate the Passover Coke items with a distinctive yellow cap in addition to the OU-P symbol on the cap or shoulder of the bottle.

I honestly did not know whether the corn syrup theory has been suggested before, it seemed a reasonable question to ask I think. Gotta love Snopes, such a great site for knocking down rumors.

You can find root beers that use real sugar... for example, Goose Island uses real sugar in their root beer other soft drinks, but its expensive and I don't know how far it is distributed.

You can get Dr Pepper with real sugar if you go down to somewhere near Dallas...I haven't been there, but a few friends of mine pick up some bottles when they are down in that direction.

Boylan's sodas are all made with real cane sugar (other than the diet sodas.) They taste excellent (I just finished a grape!)

I have been making an effort to avoid HFCS for a couple years now. I lost 20 lbs in the first year without changing anything else in my diet or exercise routine.

Try sodaking.com or bevmo.com for real sodas. There are several smaller colas made with real sugar.

I just bought two 2-liter bottles of Kosher Coke.

They are chilling in my fridge... I can't wait!

I don't know if anybody ever saw the Cola Turka commercials. These featured Chevy Chase and obviously were aired in Turkey. They were wildly popular there. Even if you are unfamiliar with Turkish culture, Chevy Chase should help make it entertaining if you don't hate Chevy, that is.

Couldn't find any around here, but I guess Jon's article didn't mention Chicago. Odd.

I didn't have any luck either. However, I talked to one of my coworkers about this and he told me of another way. Apparently Mexican coke is still made with sugar and you can find it pretty regularly in Chicago in some hispanic grocery stores. I haven't tried that avenue yet...

I was looking when I was in Detroit earlier this week. The one place I was sure would have it is One Stop Kosher, a kosher grocery store in Southfield. When I went there though it looked like a bomb had went off in the store, with the place completely trashed! There was barely anything left, as they had cordoned off the non-Passover food aisles and everything left had been ravaged. But alas, they were out of kosher Coke.

The irony is that the store I found it at in NYC was the first place I called looking for it. They told me that they didn't carry it, but there it was on the shelf last night! HA HA!!!
