Tool's New Single

Go here for a fan-made video with their new song as the track.

Also, they are doing some smaller shows. Stoppin in Minneapolis on the 12th. Tickets are supposedly going for around $63. Screw that. Song is good though.

FROM BLABBERMOUTH.net

An "unofficial" TOOL video (read: put together by a fan) for "Vicarious", the first single off their new album, "10,000 Days", has been posted online at YouTube.com. Clocking in at seven-minute-plus, "Vicarious" will begin arriving at rock radio stations on or around April 17. The band's fourth full-length disc, "10,000 Days", will surface on May 2.

TOOL are expected to play a number of U.S. dates in May, including two concert dates in New York City and a May 12 show at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, MN. The group are also rumored to be hitting several other cities that same month, including Seattle and Oakland. These shows will follow TOOL's April 30 headlining performance at the Coachella festival in Indio, California, which will be the band's first live appearance in the U.S. since 2002.

"10,000 Days" is the follow-up to TOOL's 2001 effort, "Lateralus". That album debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and has sold over 2.3 million copies.

10,000 days is also the time in between each of their albums.

jk. I'm glad they take time to work on their material.

[04/15/06] - Detroit in May? | Oakland, too! | Vicarious on the Radio
One of our forum readers reports that WRIF has announced Tool to play the State Theater in Detroit sometime in May. This is one of the venues that Tool played during the 2001 Pre-Seminal Tour. § "Live 105" in San Francisco is reporting that Tool will play the Paramount Theater in Oakland on May 4th. §

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

Dola,

Got it to work on an older computer.

Music sounds alot like the Undertown album style. I like it.

Hurst2112 04-17-2006 04:06 AM

as of right now I would put the album in this order...best to worst

Aenema
10000 days
Lateralus
Undertow
Opiate

I don't believe 10000 will be better than Aenema but you never know. Its preview had some whispers of prog stuff. The song hints to that. Time will tell. I wouldn't doubt it debuts at number 1.

Hurst2112 04-17-2006 04:07 AM

dola: bad link in first post. Looks like the video with the song got taken down. You will have to wait until May 12th.

jeff061 04-17-2006 06:46 AM

I only caught the first 30 seconds on the way in this morning, they were playing it on the radio. Sounded pretty good, can't wait for the album to hit the shelves.

May 2nd

sovereignstar 04-17-2006 11:15 AM

Dola

And the single should be playing nationwide by the end of the day.

Ksyrup 04-17-2006 12:38 PM

I downloaded the song a couple of days ago. It's good, but sounds way too much like a couple of their other songs. The intro is like a variation on a half-dozen other songs of theirs. It's a fine line between copying yourself and writing new music in your "style," but in this case, I tend to think it's the former. At least, that's how it comes across to me after 3-4 listens.

Raven Hawk 04-17-2006 01:08 PM

I thought that Tool broke up and a couple of them formed A Perfect Circle. Have I been smoking too much of the ganja?

APC is just a side project of Maynard's (lead singer). He's the only member of Tool in the band.

I was enamored with how it sounded. The drums, since Aenema have always sounded awesome. The song did have tinges of their older stuff but as a whole, the thing did get me salivating for the new CD.

No, they all died in a bus crash in 1997.

Groundhog 04-17-2006 06:33 PM

I'm a massive Tool fan.

Having said that, the new single sounds a little too much (read: a lot too much) like Schism.

In a way. I think people are getting spooked by the intro bass part. The song structure is quite different. I enjoy this song much more than Schism. I never really liked that song.

I've only heard the song once a few days ago, but from memory the main similarity was indeed the structure - maybe not the technical structure from a musical point of view, but the order of the sections within the song. It sounded pieced together very much like Schism, but it didn't grab me like Schism first did. I think it's because the breakdown at the end of Schism rocks so much and this one doesn't really.

I guess my biggest fear is that this album will be Lateralus 2. What I love about Tool is that each album they managed to move forward and explore a different sound, and because of this each Tool album sounds like a very different beast. This single sounds to me like it would not have been at all out of place on Lateralus.

I loved Lateralus when it came out, but rarely listen to it now because it's sounds so over-produced and busy to my ears. I miss the raw anger and darkness that was in their earlier music. I completely understand what they are trying to do with their music and it is nice to hear a band trying to be innovative and push boundries, but I want my old Tool back.

And wow, I can't believe that me, a prog-rock fan that can listen to a 4 minute hammond organ solo followed by a 3 minute flute break down in the middle of a song, just complained that something sounds too busy... ;)

Ksyrup 04-17-2006 09:42 PM

For whatever reason, Lateralus didn't do much for me, either. I much prefer Aenima and even Undertow to it. I probably never gave it the chance I should have, but then again, it never really drew me in.

Opeth's Ghost Reveries, on the other hand, has scarcely left my player since last August. I think it might be my favorite metal album of the past 10 years.

Same here. I loved the progressive instrumentals of Lateralus, but some of the lyrics to songs were just way too repetitive. Aenima and Undertow had a perfect balance between the two.

DUDE! How can a progger be saying that! Hehe

That is what I was referring to.

I think you and I are on similar pages...just diff paragraphs. Rock.

Recoil 04-18-2006 10:24 PM

The album leaked today. I'm digging it. I'd say it's better than Lateralus, but no Aenima.

Hurst2112 04-19-2006 12:06 AM

after futher review, the song 'vicarious' is vastly different than schism. I have only found 4 songs from the album but they are exceding expectations.

Coop 04-19-2006 12:11 AM

FYI, 10,000 days is how long Maynard's mom was paralyzed before she died. Judith from APC is also about his mother

here are some lyrics from it

Quote:

10,000 days in the fire is long enough, you're going home
Quote:

You were my witness,
My eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion:
Should you see your Maker's face tonight,
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.
Hallelujah, its time for you to bring me home.

I dont know how accurate the lyrics are..

sovereignstar 04-19-2006 12:25 AM

The album isn't even officially out and you're given fucking spoilers. How stupid can one be?

JeeberD 04-19-2006 12:30 AM

Spoilers...to a song?

Some people like to decipher the lyrics and the general inspiration/meaning of an album by themselves. Not a big deal, but I get the sense Coop wants everyone to pat him on the back for posting some scoop he just got from some douchebag site.

JeeberD 04-19-2006 12:34 AM

A bit testy tonight, eh? I just never knew that music could have spoilers...

JeeberD 04-19-2006 12:35 AM

Dola-

OK, your second post makes me see the light.

Coop 04-19-2006 12:41 AM

Yes please pat me on my back, I need it so bad.

wonder if Sov would check off on my geek spoilers for music i listen to?

"Yeah, that 5/8 part that switches to a 3/4 playing over the barline with the 6/8 bass line...that's so cool. At about 2 mins into the song, the guitar phrasing is inverted, etc"

SPOILER: I'm not talking about the Tool album...just making something up.

Draft Dodger 04-19-2006 04:48 PM

if it means anything, Sov, I chuckled.

Hurst2112 04-19-2006 05:40 PM

Found a clip from the new Tool live video. Sorry if it's been posted already. Sorry to Sov for spoiling.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...q=Tool&pl=true

Yes, that's Maynard

dawgfan 04-19-2006 06:58 PM

Wow. The delta between the quality of that band vs. Tool is immense. I think it's safe to say that whatever path that took Maynard from this group to Tool was a wise one.

JeeberD 04-19-2006 07:00 PM

Maynard rapping was...odd.
