Stupid birds

we've got a gas fireplace in our family room that has a metal vent outside of the house.

yesterday when I turned on the heat, I heard a commotion outside; turns out some robins had build a nest on the warm vent. the fact that the vent was so warm that it was burning the nest didn't seem to bother them. anyway, we took it down right away.

early yesterday evening, I saw them rummaging around out there again, and went out to scare them away.

this morning? nest was completely rebuilt! wife took it down again and tried to scare them by acting like and eagle or something.

10 minutes later, she was pulling out to go to school...and they were right back to work. I'm looking out my window now, and can see them out there. I think they are going to try to build the damn thing again. *sigh* can't they take a hint?

one of those little fuckers has a damn stick and just landed on the grate...

SirFozzie 04-22-2006 07:39 AM

They probably have avian flu, too :D

CraigSca 04-22-2006 09:06 AM

Time to fire up the fireplace.

Draft Dodger 04-22-2006 09:13 AM

You need a Daisy Red Rider double-action carbine BB-gun.

bbor 04-22-2006 11:04 AM

DD...Did'nt you have the bat problem at one time too?

Your house is like Animal kingdon.

What's next?A rhino charging up your ass?:D

I swear to God if I find a fucking rhino in my basement, I WILL come to Toronto and kick your ass.

Did you know that Keene NH did have a rhino problem once? well, digital rhinos anyway - the stampede scene in Jumanji was filmed here.

The picture in my mind of your wife acting like an eagle is quite humorous.

While cleaning up the garage getting ready to move, we found a part of a nest built in an overturned coffee table we had wrapped with blankets and put out there while our little one learned to walk. They apparently abandoned it, though, and ended up taking residence in one of the crossbars supporting the garage door. I had noticed a bird in the garage a couple of times recently when I walked out from the house, but didn't think much of it. Now I know why. Looks like the lady buying our house is getting a pet.

I think you gotta shoot them if they try again.

Draft Dodger 04-23-2006 01:32 PM

really, this is getting ridiculous. we're clearing the nest away 3 or 4 times a day. I'm worried there's going to be eggs in it sometime, but the frigging thing is going to start a fire.

chinaski 04-23-2006 01:50 PM

some good and cheap tips here...

cute kid story alert: yesterday, my wife and I were discussing what to do about the birds. I suggested hanging an old beanie baby up over the nesting area. a few minutes later, Graham came out of his room and said "you can have my giraffe daddy". I didn't quite get it at first, but then it dawned on me that he was offering me one of his stuffed animals to help with the robins.

i have a similar problem with a couple birds trying to build a nest inside an old air conditioner housing that is built into my bedroom wall, and now has a smaller AC inside it, leaving a gap of about 4 inches on one side. Every year they show up and try to build a nest even though ever time they come and go they hit the side of the metal housing, making a very loud noise while i am sleeping. they are apparently smarter than DD's birds though, because once i take the nest down once, they go build one somewhere else.

my wife nailed a rubber snake to the wall today (after taking down yet another smoldering nest). stay tuned.

stevew 04-24-2006 09:28 AM

Pumpy would like to see pictures of Mrs DD acting like an eagle.

Last year we had a nest in a wreath my wife left on the front door. We were going to knock it down, but it had eggs in it by the time we got around to it. Plus, the kids loved them. We were actually a little saddened when they finally left the nest, but it was nice to have our front door back.

What, skipped the badgers?

Dude's gone nuclear, stay back!

Draft Dodger 04-25-2006 08:21 AM

I think we've won. no nest activity since the snake went up

SnDvls 04-26-2006 03:05 PM

DD - if they do come back there is a product I bought once called something like bird be gone that worked great, but it might be flamable so check first.
