Sources: Tony Snow likely to take White House post

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sources close to the White House said Monday that Fox anchor Tony Snow is likely to accept the job as White House press secretary, succeeding Scott McClellan.

The sources said they expect him to announce his decision within the next few days.

A source familiar with the discussions said Monday that newly appointed Chief of Staff Josh Bolten asked Snow to make a decision by early this week.

Two sources familiar with the discussions said Bolten wanted to fill the post this week, as early as Tuesday.

Sources familiar with Snow's deliberations said he has been focusing on family, finances and his health.

The sources said Snow, who has been battling colon cancer, got a good prognosis from his doctor last week and that Snow resolved his concerns about taking the job over the weekend.

Neither Snow nor the White House would comment.

Sources familiar with the matter said the White House approached the Fox anchor several weeks ago. Snow then met with Bolten and other officials at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Snow serves as a political analyst for Fox News Channel, which he joined in 1996.

He was a nationally syndicated columnist with The Detroit News in Detroit, Michigan, from 1993 to 2001 and was a columnist for USA Today from 1994 to 2000.

Before that, he was an editorial writer at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Virginia; editorial page editor of The Daily Press in Newport News, Virginia; deputy editorial page editor of The Detroit News; and editorial page editor of The Washington Times.

The conservative radio talk show host, who was born in 1955, served as a speech writer for President Bush's father in 1991.

In a separate personnel matter, discussions are also continuing about replacing Treasury Secretary John Snow, said two sources familiar with the issue and a third GOP source close to the White House.

Republicans familiar with the discussions said David Mulford, currently U.S. ambassador to India and a former Treasury Department official who also was the European chief of Credit Suisse First Boston, is considered a candidate for the job.

Well, he's no Neil Cavuto, but I wish him well.

(And I guess I live in a media vacuum or something, I didn't even know about his cancer until reading it in this article)

Well, by hiring a Fox News anchor, it appears they are just eliminating the middleman.

Hosted by FOX News Channel's Brian Kilmeade, co-host of the network's morning show, FOX & Friends, the three-hour Mon.-Fri. program will also feature FNC's senior judicial analyst, Judge Andrew Napolitano, a former New Jersey Superior Court judge.

well at least, like Dutch likes to harp on, they arent hiding their bias on either side. FOxnews is obviously the Admin's bullhorn, and they finally dont have to hide it....certainly supports the idea of the media being biased so in a sense Dutch is right.

My thoughts exactly.

I went to see Ian Anderson (of Jethro Tull "fame") in concert in DC last year and Tony Snow was up on stage with him for half the show. He's apparently a longtime Tull fan and plays the flute because of them, he played along with Ian Anderson for a bit. He managed to bite his tongue when Ian Anderson went off with his leftie hippy stuff.

Can't be many who've seen the White House Press Secretary live in concert.

(p.s. Obviously I was dragged to see the Jethro Tull guy live in concert, I'm faaaar too cool to go and see crap like that unless forced.)
