Good two player one machine games?
 

Cooperative play preferred, if head-to-head it really needs to be turn based. Sports and war games not preferred.

In case it's not obvious, my wife and I are interested in picking up a game. Any help would be appreciated.

Lego Star Wars adventure was pretty fun co-op. Dunno if that's a "war game" though, probably is.

Metal Slug for the Xbox was a fun game for my g/f and myself - might be a war game again (think contra). Really hard though.

Platform? On Xbox my wife and I loved the Baldur's Gate stuff, the first 3D Gauntlet that came out (not the recently released RPG-style one), and X-Men Legends. All worked great for co-op play on the same box.

Kung Fu Chaos is also a MUST buy...

On the PC we've got two machines so all our gaming was networked.

The system question is important.. for "girl" games, i've found the Gamecube to be ideal - in particular Mario Party seems to fit your turn-based idea very well...

Not many 1 PC 2+ player games I can think of; that's a console domain. Something like Worms or Civ maybe where you are looking at hotseat-style play. You are better off either buying a console (which we did) or an extra computer and networking them (which we also did, since we're both computer geeks). Games like Dungeon Siege are a lot of fun played co-op across 2 PCs when you are sitting next to each other.

I would really second Lego Star Wars, it's a load of fun and even comical at times. Sure, you have to use a light saber, but you're destroying characters made up of lego block so they blow up like you'd expect a lego character to blow up, very well done. The co-op is pretty nice.

It's available for PC as well as all three main consoles.

This is a pretty limited genre. I'm really suprised they don't make more 2 player co-op type games.

Unfortunately, I don't know PC all that well these days, but there's all kinds of console stuff. Also, my friends and I don't really care as much about sports and shooting games so we have similar preferences in that regard. For the Gamecube, here's what we have played.

Of course there's the "party game" fare. That includes:
Mario Kart Double Dash
Super Smash Bros Melee
Super Monkey Ball, SMB2

Then there's more co-op'y stuff:
Legend of Zelda: Four Swords (need 2 GBAs, preferrably SPs, to play)
X-Men Legends 1, 2
Lord of the Rings: The Third Age
Phantasy Star Online 1&2 Plus

It's a pretty limited genre for a reason. I don't think there's a huge market for PC 2 player co-op type games. I think the market is for 2 player console games more than the PC.

Yes, but it's even limited a bit on the consoles as well. When I worked in a video game department, I always had people looking for co-op stuff like baldars gate, and there really isnt a whole lot of it.

My wife and I played a lot of Roller Coaster Tycoon together. We would either set a timer and just take turns in the same park or make decisions together. It worked for us because she liked to create paths and pretty stuff; I just liked to make rides. Any "sandbox" title would work the same way, as long as you both don't like to do the exact same things within the same game.

The 2-player co-op networked games are more common. The reason you don't see 2-player-co-op-on-one-PC games are controller issues. Most PC gamers use keyboard and mouse, and it's not easy to fit two of those in front of a computer. Much easier to just have two computers.

I would suggest any and all versions of Worms.

It turns out after discussing it more in depth that she wants to kick my ass at something.

So Tycoon is out and Worms is in. But I didn't like the Worms Mayhem demo so I'm going old school. Does head-to-head open up any more possibilities? We like You Don't Know Jack but are there any trivia games where reading speed doesn't offer a huge advantage?

Have you checked Underdogs- they have a lot of abandonware.

Thanks for the help, but apparently it's not abandonware. I'm going to get it off of Amazon.com, but does anyone know if it will run on XP?

There's an FAQ post on Team17's forum indicating it's not designed to run on XP because of some XP DOS issue. Anyone ever run it? The demo works fine on my computer.
