What the heck is a "data call???"

Just had something happen that has never happened to me before. My mobile phone started ringing with a strange ringtone that I'd never heard, and the words "Data Call" came up on the screen. A phone number that was (based on the Area Code) from Massachusetts came on the screen, and underneath the number, the option for me to turn on Infrared became enabled. I did nothing, not sure what was going on. I then dialed the number back, and got a message saying the number I'd dialed was no longer in service. Huh??? Any ideas as to what the heck that was?

could it have been a cell phone software update?

At first glance, nothing looks different. I didn't answer the call, and it is listed as a "missed call."

I'd imagine it was someone trying to connect to their isp, or maybe office, through a dialup connection and they typed in the wrong number.

As far as how the cell phone handled it, no clue.

That was the first thing I did, before even posting here. Nothing.

Not unheard of, if it's a junk fax.

Although they aren't anywhere near as common as junk mail, spam, or annoying phone calls, they do happen occasionally. Most commonly from those fake office supply/copier supply scams.

You should have taken the blue pill.

Yeah, we get a few of these per day to our office, mostly for third-party insurance.
