"White Trash"
 

Sorry for the rant.

One thing that really irks me is the term "White Trash." You hear this term thrown about by white people referring to other white people who live in trailer parks or act like Paris Hilton...

You never hear these people refer to others as "Black Trash," "Latino Trash" or "Asian Trash." Nope. Why is that? Could it be that they just assume that they, as white people are better than others and that certain white persons do not meet up with what they feel is a standard of excellence therefore becoming "Trash?"

yes..... all us 'evil' white people think we are better then all other 'inferior' races. so when some white people don't live up to our greatness, we shun them from our race and call them white trash, (or crackers as they are called here in florida).

It's a term that has been around a long, long time.

I actually use the phrase Pacific Islander Trash quite a bit.

Funny this came up today. Yesterday, I listened to a serious and rather heated conversation between two white males about whether the term "redneck" should be viewed as a derogatory term or as a term of pride.

Maybe you should come up with a better term for people formerly known as white trash. I would love to hear your ideas since political correctness is all the rave these days.

Hell yeah, they were one of about two dozen or so good, original bands that got shafted because they came up at the beginning of the 90s and grunge cut short their careers. Just bad timing, that's all.

Why, what's wrong with white trash?

This thought actually came about after hearing a colleage of mine use the term a few years ago to talk about someone. I happen to be white, and realized that subconsciously the term means more than it does on the surface, due to the lack of equal termage in regard to non-white persons. Do non-white people use the term "White Trash?" Generally not.

I ran the theory by another colleage of mine who is black. He agreed that he doesn't use the term "White Trash." Noting that the people who use the term don't seem to use a similar term for non-white persons of lower esteem, I asked him what term these people tend to use for such people who are black. I already knew his answer. What's funny is that happens to be the same term they use for black people who are not of lower esteem too.

What people need to realize is that everyone sucks! :D

Umm, that may be a regional thing, but it is used by non-whites here in the South. I'd say it's at least as commonly used by non-whites as the aforementioned "cracker", arguably moreso.

Hmmm. Use, or create, any term that puts down people of another race and get called racist. Now, according to your logic, if you don't use a term to put down people of other races, you are also racist?

Yeah, that logic makes sense.

Just because there may not be an equivalent term for every other race doesn't mean that the term itself is not true.

I have never met a person who I would say for sure fits in this "white trash" catagory. I see alot of caucasians who look to be mentally disturbed but I don't think that would qualify them to be called "white trash". It's a silly term to me anyway but as a nation in our history we have had many pointless ways of describing people.

Same here. We should get together and try to piece the why's and what's of it all together.

White Trash: Any caucasian lacking a normal level of manners, self respect, respect for others, and or personal hygiene. Can often be identified by their aloof or erratic behavior in public places. Very often associated with a lower than normal EQ (that little voice inside your head that tells you when and where it is appropriate to say certain things). ;)

Trash is Trash, whether it is White, Black, Latino, or Asian.

I always thought this term was originally coined (and largely kept in use) by the media and as such the reason there are no equivalents for other ethnic types is simply because the media wouldn't get away with commenting upon non-white people in that manner.

(the following is entirely conjecture on my behalf - its been over a decade since I studied statistics and media trends so I could be utterly wrong)
There are sections of society which its deemed 'fair game' to pick upon (ie. you won't be jumped on as non-PC immediately) - for instance white people, fat people, etc. ... why is it allowed? ... in the case of fat people and similar traits its because few people in thoe categories really want to stand up and fight for 'fat people rights' because they'd prefer not to be in that category themselves with caucasians its largely because anyone who tried to protest against people abusing white people would be accused by the media of racism (at least in England) and so generally people just accept it rather than risk making themselves personally targets for abuse ..

Also, a fairly large section of the public can brush off the insult. Here in Oz you'd get jail for calling an Italian a "greasy wog" and strung up for saying anything at all detrimental against Aborigines but calling an Englishman a "pommie bastard" gets you a medal :)

Louis CK did a routine about how it's weird that it's socially acceptable to make fun of "white trash" cause you are basically just dissing someone because they are poor.
