Update from the soak test today...I just typed the whole damn top 20 scorers and their draft positions but lost it all, so I'll just recap:
From the top 20 scorers in 2018/2019 season:
-Average draft position: 37th overall
-1 sixth round pick
-1 seventh round pick
-1 third round pick
-2 second round picks
-15 first round picks
Naturally, the first 10-15 seasons are a bit twisted because of the last few real drafts and how those players are entered into the database. Since no-one can accurately say how the last few first rounds will turn out in the long run, I'd say most of them are rated as a lot safer picks in the DB than they might turn out in real life later on. Which means players from about the last 3 drafts might have not that many busts in the top rounds as such. Which would mean more of the "variable potential" values needs to be used in the DB for these players.
However, going further into the game, with the drafts being more driven by the improved regen and scouting systems, there are less sure fire first rounders and more late round gems. Looking at the 2011 draft for example, I can take the following examples:
1st overall pick: Esa Karhunen, RW, FIN, drafted by Oilers. Straight into NHL after being drafted after a good season with Turku in the Finnish league (17+23 in 54 games). Rookie season, 82 games with Oilers, 27 points. Sophmore season, 44 games in the NHL (15 pts) then traded to Montreal where sent to AHL for 39 games (36 pts). Third season up with MTL, 76 games and 22 points, then fourth season 82 games and 19 points and a career best NHL/AHL +/- of -9. Moved back to Europe after that and playing there since, being a decent but not that great player. So a quite a bust really. NHL totals 284 games 27+56 for 83 points.
2nd overall: Zack Foster, RW, CAN, drafted by Bruins. Straight to NHL after getting better every season in the OHL (129 pts in the last season), rookie season 72 games and 46 points. Sophmore season 82 games, 66 points, a stint of 6 games in the AHL as well, 6 pts. Then two slower seasons with 45 and 42 points, before signing with the Leafs and exploding into 106 points in his second season there. Career NHL totals so far: 573 games, 182+295 for 477 points.
3rd overall: Danny Needham, LW, CAN, drafted by Detroit. Split rookie season between NHL and AHL, 36 games and 6 points in NHL, 44 games and 60 points in the AHL. Second season AHL 78 games 82 points. Never made the jump into the next level and moved to Europe and has played in Germany since, being a big star for his team there. NHL totals 36 games, 3+3 for 6 points.
Other established players from the draft (good players from the top rounds and players from the later rounds who have made nice careers):
Rob Bertone, 17th overall. 430 points in 469 games so far (C)
Jaromir Cech, 20th overall. 266 points in 381 games (RW) - came over only after playing 3 more seasons in Czech after being drafted
Doc Carroll, 24th overall. 410 pts in 488 games (D)
Stephen Potter, 38th overall, 488 points in 482 games (LW) - best player from this draft was picked in the 2nd round
Lukas Hluchy, 129th overall, 68 points in 460 games (D)
Reade Wheeler, 148th overall, 69 points in 444 games (RW)
Adam Plihal, 186th overall, 461 points in 561 games (RW) - never got a chance to play top lines with Canucks who drafted him in the 7th round, exploded into a point per game player after being traded to Oilers in his 4th season
Carsen Ouelette, 206th overall, 58 points in 360 games (LW) - goon
