Yes, it sucks. And it's expensive. But dial-up speeds around here top out at about 26k. On a good day.

You can't get Cable where you live? These days they basically run that anywhere and everywhere, I suppose it may not be worth their money if you live so far away and there aren't enough other people out there I guess.

No cable, and I'm too far away for DSL.

We're in a pretty rural area, and since everything around here is 10 acre plots, the population density doesn't exist to make this a profitable region for cable.

Ya know, we now these things called cell phones which enable you to call from virtually anywhere. And get this, some are smaller than your hand!

Just got a proper internet setup via. my mobile phone in the last week, its pretty good (256k) but I can't wait until it ramps up to 1.5Mb (sometime in the next three months apparently) ... even better if that its a fixed tariff for unlimited use :D

It still amazes me at how fast technology comes along, if things keep up at this rate I can't imagine what things are going to be like in ten years time.

Satellite? I think DirecTV had something going for a while, and there are other providers. Check out http://broadbandreports.com and you might be able to find something.

Satellite broadband is way too expensive IMO. Last time I checked they wanted something like 600 to set up, and around 60 a month.

I spent a lot of time on broadbandreports.com getting information on how to set up my ISDN router (FYI - it's a pain).

Steve is right about satellite... it's very costly. Not only that, but the service sucks. There are three main problems:

1. Bandwidth is limited. Once you go over your montly allotment, they throttle your speed for the rest of the month. I'm sure you can pay extra to remove the cap, but then you're getting into the realm of stupid-expensive.

2. Latency is a problem. The latency in transmission is often too great for VPN applications to work (which is my primary need).

3. Unreliability. Bad weather either at my home, or at the network operations center, can interrupt the connection. I can't have that.

So, overall, it's just a lot of money for not a lot of reliability. With the ISDN, I get a dependable 128k. It's not great, and it costs me about $100 a month (about $75 for the line, the rest goes to the ISP).

FN's right about satellite. When we moved to our new house in 2001, we had no options for internet other than dial-up (which was capped, in my experience, to 33.6!). I couldn't deal with that, so I got satellite. The only reason I did it was because they gave me 12 months to pay off the cost of the equipment (which was around $600, plus $200 to send a crew from Jacksonville to install the damn thing).

And for $60 a month, you couldn't download "all you want" - after about 150MB of straight downloading, your service crawled to a slow until the next day. About the time we got cable and I got rid of satellite, they were offering, for about $90 a month, a better service that gave you more bandwidth, but it wasn't close to being worth it.

Bottom line...if you're desperate like I was, it will work, but otherwise go with another option.

Oh, and a feature they don't advertise is the built-in rain detector. About 30-45 seconds before a rain storm, your service will cut off, instantly alerting you to an imminent downpour.

I think the mobile phone remark is simply that you can (in the UK at least) get mobile connections which are faster than a dial up internet connection.

Mines currently running 256k* with a coming upgrade taking it to 1.5Mb in the next 3 months, this combined with unlimited usage for £10/month is quite nice.

I'm afraid I have no idea if this sort of thing is available in America, but I'd be surprised if it isn't ...

*Which admittedly seems darn slow to me now I'm used to my 8Mb broadband at home ... I love being a geek ;)

I know my Wife's work has the broadband Sprint on a couple of the laptops, but it's something rediculously priced IIRC, like 70-80. Unlimited broadband mobile for 30ish a month would be amazing.
